In the BaZi system (八字), your Day Master (日主 (rì zhǔ — "master of the day")) is the heavenly stem in the day position of your birth chart, expressing the very essence of your personality. If your Day Master is 癸 (Gui, Yin Water), then your nature is like morning dew, mist, fine rain, a spring in the mountains. You are not the ocean or the river, like Ren — you are subtle, penetrating water, nourishing life where it is barely noticeable.
The classic 滴天髓 says: "癸水至弱, 達於天津" — "Gui Water is weak to the utmost, yet reaches the Heavenly Ford." A paradoxical description: Gui seems the weakest element among the ten stems, but through its subtlety and penetration it reaches where no other can reach. A drop wears away stone. Mist penetrates every crack. Dew revives the leaf. Gui is a power you cannot see until you look closely.
1 The Basic Nature of Gui
Picture an early morning in the mountains. On the grass — silvery dew. Over the valley — a light mist. Drops trickle down the leaves. The air is fresh, everything is soaked in moisture. This is not Ren's stormy ocean, this is an entirely different element — subtle, quiet, poetic. The Gui person lives exactly this way: their strength lies in a keen perception of the world, in the ability to notice subtleties, in empathy, in the gift of being fully "present."
The principal qualities of Gui:
Gui is the tenth and last of the heavenly stems, the yin (feminine) aspect of the Water element. If Ren is the current in action, then Gui is water in a state of transition: vapor, mist, condensate, rain. Gui signifies "measuring" (literally the character 癸 is associated with divinatory offerings and the start of a new cycle) — in this sense Gui closes the circle of the ten stems and at the same time gives rise to the new.
2 Strengths and Weaknesses
The strength of Gui — how it manifests
- A fine sensitivity to people. Gui sees who lies, who suffers, who is hiding something. A natural psychologist, even without training.
- Intuitive wisdom. Knows solutions they cannot explain with logic. Often right when "everyone around is wrong."
- A subtle mind and erudition. Gui is often a scholar with deep knowledge in a narrow field. Loves to dig into the details.
- Poetry and artistic talent. Many poets and musicians are Gui by nature. They feel the rhythm of language, the harmony of sound, the nuances.
- The capacity to heal. Gui is a natural healer, the way dew returns life to a withered leaf. They often become doctors, psychotherapists, spiritual mentors.
- Long-suffering patience. A drop wears away stone. Gui can move slowly, over years, toward a goal and in the end win where the "storms" died out long ago.
- The capacity for deep love. If Gui has fallen in love — it is for a long time and all the way through.
Weaknesses — where Gui "evaporates"
- Anxiety. The principal shadow trait. Gui is prone to worry, fears, obsessive thoughts, exaggerated concern for the future.
- Low self-esteem. Gui often underestimates themselves, feels "insufficient," especially beside bright yang personalities.
- Emotional "floods". When Gui is overwhelmed with others' emotions, they may "drift away" for several days — withdraw, lose appetite, cry for no apparent reason.
- A tendency toward daydreaming at the expense of action. Gui may plan, imagine, fantasize for years — but not act.
- Dependence on the opinions of others. Gui absorbs what is said nearby. If they fall into a toxic environment — they can be psychologically destroyed.
- Secrecy out of fear. Gui does not share, not because they are hiding (like Ren), but because they fear judgment and being misunderstood.
- A tendency toward self-sacrifice. May give themselves to others until complete exhaustion, forgetting their own needs.
- Psychosomatic illnesses. The emotions Gui does not express take root in the body: migraines, skin reactions, gastritis, insomnia.
3 Gui and the Elements: Friends and Foes
To understand Gui more deeply, you need to know how Yin Water interacts with the five elements.
Metal (庚, 辛) is the "mother" of Gui. Xin (辛, Yin Metal) is especially beneficial — a jewel that gathers the dew. This is the most tender and beautiful combination. In people it is parents (especially the mother), wise mentors, supportive female teachers. Gui with good Metal is a person of deep erudition and inner support.
Wood (甲, 乙) is the "output" of Gui. Yin Wood (乙, flowers) is especially favorable — Gui nourishes the flower, and it blooms. This is about creative self-expression: writing, art, poetry. Many great poets and artists have the Gui+Yi combination.
Water (壬, 癸) — siblings by nature. With Ren (壬) — soft water flows into the ocean, support from the elder. With another Gui — two dewdrops merge, which can bring both support and a blurring of boundaries.
Fire (丙, 丁) is the "wealth" of Gui. Bing (丙, the sun) over the dew is a risky combination: the sun evaporates the dew. This means that for Gui money can "evaporate" easily if there is too much of it, while the Water is weak. With Ding (丁, the candle) it is subtler — it can be harmonious, especially if there is Wood as an intermediary.
Earth (戊, 己) is the "control" of Gui. Wu Earth (戊, the mountain) is a dam halting the current. Ji Earth (己, the field) is a swamp in which the water grows murky. For Gui, Earth often means obligations, pressure, responsibility. Too much earth = Gui suffocates under the weight of debts and obligations.
4 The Career of Gui — Where They Excel
Gui is by nature a refined specialist with an intuitive mind. A coarse, noisy environment does not suit them. They need fields where sensitivity, insight into detail, emotional intelligence, and creativity are valued.
Ideal fields
- Psychology, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis — Gui hears what the patient does not say. One of the best Day Masters for "healing" professions.
- Medicine with a fine diagnostic component — diagnostics, neurology, endocrinology, homeopathy, reflexology.
- Poetry, literary prose, music — Gui feels rhythm and nuance better than most.
- Teaching — especially in the humanities, languages, art. Gui cares personally about every student.
- Social work, charity — Gui goes to the weak and the needy, sees their pain.
- Spiritual practices, meditation, yoga, esotericism — Gui is natural at working with subtle energies.
- Artistic styling, floristry, the tea ceremony — where subtlety and aesthetics matter more than productivity.
- Research work, science — especially in a narrow niche requiring depth. The humanities and fundamental sciences.
- Translation, especially literary — Gui feels the language down to the intonation.
- Literary editing, copywriting of subtle texts — where the music of words matters.
What to avoid
- Crude commerce, aggressive sales — Gui will break under the pressure.
- A corporate environment with fierce competition and intrigue — it wounds too much.
- Enforcement structures — this is not their element at all.
- Work with large numbers of people at once (mass service) — Gui absorbs everyone's energy and becomes depleted.
- Professions requiring emotional callousness — Gui cannot "switch off" their compassion.

In love, Gui is a tender, faithful, subtle nature who gives a partner everything they have. Gui loves deeply and for a long time, remembers every detail, feels the slightest shift in a partner's mood. But this same subtlety makes Gui very vulnerable: hard, coarse partners destroy Gui the way the sun evaporates dew.
What Gui seeks in a partner
- Emotional safety. Above all. The partner must be reliable, calm, non-aggressive.
- Depth. Superficial people do not stay long in Gui's life. Gui needs a partner with whom they can talk about meaning.
- Acceptance of their sensitivity. The partner must be able to embrace a weeping Gui without irritation or belittlement. "Why are you crying again?" — that is a breakup.
- The ability to protect. Gui seeks in a partner protection from the harsh world. Often drawn to yang Day Masters (Jia, Bing, Ren, Wu, Geng).
- Stability. Not adventures, but comfort. Gui does not like chaos in relationships.
The Gui man in relationships
The Gui man is often a "tender, sensitive, caring" husband whom his wife treasures for his attention to detail. He remembers anniversaries, cooks breakfast, notices a new haircut. But he is not a "mountain of protection": in serious crises he himself needs emotional support. A strong-willed wife in such a pairing may become the "head," which is not always comfortable for either of them. The Gui man often attracts women inclined to dominate — and this is his pain: he needs tenderness, but receives a commanding tone. Ideally, the Gui man needs a gentle woman who values his inner world.
The Gui woman in relationships
The Gui woman is the classic "tender muse": subtle, empathetic, intuitive, often creative. Men are drawn to her for "warmth and support." The danger: the Gui woman is inclined to fall in love with "rescuers" or, conversely, with those she herself wants to rescue. She often suffers from codependent relationships: "he is bad, but I will fix him." Her ideal is a steady, calm, kind man (Jia or Ren are the classic matches). The Gui woman in a relationship with a Fire man often becomes the shadow of her partner, melting from his heat.
Ideal partners by Day Master
Partners best avoided
- A strong Bing (丙) — Yang Sun. Direct light evaporates the dew. Gui may dissolve completely into the brighter personality and lose themselves.
- A strong Wu (戊) — Yang Earth. A great mountain-dam. Gui will suffocate under a domineering, authoritarian partner.
- A coarse Ji (己) — Yin Earth without useful elements. Muddies the water — constant petty conflicts, domestic toxicity.
6 The Health of Gui
In Chinese medicine, Water governs the kidneys and the bladder, as well as the bones, teeth, ears, the reproductive system, and the emotion of fear. Gui, as yin water, is especially prone to "subtle" disorders.
Vulnerable areas of Gui
- Kidneys — but not so much gross functional disorders as subtle ones: gravel, frequent cystitis, a decline of "kidney qi" (general weakness, cold extremities, hair loss).
- Hormonal system — thyroid disorders, imbalance of sex hormones, PMS in women.
- Reproductive system — infertility, endometriosis, polycystic ovaries in women; impotence, low libido in men.
- Skin — eczema, neurodermatitis, allergic dermatitis. Gui's skin is very thin and reactive.
- Insomnia and sleep disorders — the most frequent complaint of Gui. Anxiety keeps them from falling asleep.
- Depression and anxiety disorders — Gui is one of the most psychologically vulnerable Day Masters.
- Migraines and tension headaches — psychosomatic, against a background of suppressed emotions.
- Cold hands and feet — disorders of peripheral circulation.
- Psychosomatic gastritis and IBS — Gui's gut reacts to stress instantly.
Recommendations
- Warmth, warmth and once again warmth. Gui is cold physically and emotionally. Warm clothing, warm food, a warm environment.
- A regular sleep schedule, ideally going to bed before 11 p.m. Gui regenerates at night.
- Working with anxiety — essential. Psychotherapy (cognitive-behavioral), meditation, yoga, breathing practices.
- Minimal coffee, alcohol, stimulants. They deplete "kidney qi."
- Homeopathy, herbal medicine, gentle treatment methods — Gui responds to them better than to "heavy" chemistry.
- Protection from a toxic environment. Gui absorbs the energy of the people around them. Remove toxic people from your life — half the illnesses will pass.
- Creative self-expression — an essential medicine. A journal, music, drawing, dance. Without an outlet, the emotions take root as illnesses.
- Warm foods: ginger, cinnamon, lamb, buckwheat, walnut, black beans. Avoid raw, cold foods.
7 Money and Financial Strategy
In BaZi, for Gui Fire = money. But unlike Ren, who powerfully controls fire, Gui has a fragile relationship with fire: the sun easily evaporates the dew. This means: Gui knows how to attract money, but often does not hold onto it. There may be income, but it easily "evaporates" on emotional spending, help to loved ones, impulsive purchases.
The money patterns of Gui
- Earns through craft, reputation, fine expertise. Not mass production, but "signature work."
- Often works in creative, healing, educational professions — where the fees are smaller than a banker's, but the work is a joy.
- Inclined to help others financially — relatives, friends, sometimes strangers. May fall into a personal abyss because of this.
- Impulsive spending on "subtle" things — books, art, courses, esotericism. Gui invests in experience, not in property.
- Money from a partner or inheritance — a frequent story. Gui rarely becomes a millionaire on their own, but often receives support.
- The danger of swindlers and manipulators. Gui is trusting, empathetic, and poor at recognizing self-serving motives.
- The best investments for Gui — education, art (as an asset), real estate in beautiful places, spiritual practices (as "the capital of self-understanding").
8 Major Luck (大運) — The Life Cycles of Gui
Every 10 years of life in BaZi is a new "luck pillar" (Da Yun, 大運), coloring the period with a particular element. For Gui, the best cycles are:
- Metal cycles (Geng, Xin) — especially Xin. Support from mentors, education, spiritual growth, a sense of grounding. Gui feels "pulled together."
- Wood cycles (Jia, Yi) — creative flourishing, the realization of talents, publications, exhibitions, students. Many Gui become well-known precisely in these years.
And the dangerous cycles:
- Cycles of strong Fire (especially Bing in combination with summer months) — Gui "evaporates," emotional and physical burnout, depression, loss of money and strength.
- Cycles of heavy Earth — obligations, pressure, conflicts with authorities, kidney problems.
- Cycles of excessive Water — a flood of emotions, loss of focus, psychological crises.

9 Gui in the Modern World
The 21st century is cruel to subtlety. The modern world prizes the loud, the bright, the productive — and Gui often feels "out of place" in an age of high-speed trends. But it is precisely now, when people have been flooded with "toxic positivity" and superficial communication, that Gui's subtlety has become an especially valuable capital.
- Online psychotherapist / deep-work coach — a growing niche where Gui is in their element.
- Substack essayist, poet on Telegram — the modern form of the "poet at court."
- Emotional intelligence expert — corporations need people who understand the psychology of employees.
- Artist, illustrator, designer of subtle aesthetics — the Pinterest universe loves Gui aesthetics: watercolor, minimalism, nature.
- Teacher of meditation, yoga, qigong — in demand globally.
- Ambient/lo-fi music producer, sound engineer — Gui feels the subtle frequencies.
- Esoteric consultant, tarot reader, astrologer — the modern "seer" working through the internet.
- Archive keeper, rare-book librarian, restorer — Gui cares for the fragile and the forgotten.
10 What to Do Right Now If You Are Gui
- Learn your full chart — the Gui Day Master is only 1/8 of the information. Without knowing your birth month and the other elements, it is impossible to understand the strength or weakness of your Gui.
- Find your Yong Shen (useful element). For most weak Gui it is Metal (especially Xin). Surround yourself with white and silvery tones, wear elegant jewelry, seek out aesthete mentors.
- Work with anxiety — this is your main enemy. Psychotherapy + breathing practices + journaling. Without this, life will run in "survival mode."
- Learn to say "no". Especially to financial and emotional requests from loved ones. Self-sacrifice is the road to burnout.
- Protect your sensitivity. It is not a weakness, it is a gift, but it requires guarding. Limit time with toxic people. Create quiet spaces.
- Create regularly. Creativity is your medicine and your expression. If you don't publish — write for yourself, for the drawer. It heals all the same.
- Don't try to be Ren. Your strength is not in the current, but in penetration. Don't compare yourself to "loud" leaders — your role is different.
- Preserve warmth. Physically and emotionally. A warm home, warm clothing, warm relationships. Cold of any kind is your enemy.
- Find your "Xin" — a mentor or partner with a pure yin-metal nature. This will give you support for years.

Get Full Reading · from 1000 RUBYour Day Master Gui is not a defect — it is a blessing packaged in a form that the modern world recognizes poorly. The ancient masters said that it is precisely Gui people who bring into the world what is most lacking: subtlety, wisdom, healing, poetry, care for the fragile. Without Gui, the world would be only currents and conflagrations — but there would be no dew on the petal, no mist over the lake, no tender song at sunset.
In history, Gui are the great poets, mystics, healers, philosophers of the inner world. Your task is not to become brighter and louder. Your task is to become the truest dew that only your dew can be, and to leave a silvery trace wherever you pass.
