At the heart of the BaZi system lies the concept of the five primary elements — Wu Xing (五行 (wǔ xíng — "five elements")). These are far more than abstract categories: each element corresponds to specific personality traits, organs of the body, areas of life, and cycles of time.

Your birth chart is a unique blend of these five elements. And it's their balance that determines where you're strong, where your weak spots lie, and what you need to reinforce to find harmony.

The creation cycle: elements nourish one another

The five elements don't exist in isolation — they're bound together by two main cycles. The first is the creation cycle (生, shēng): each element feeds the next.

ElementFeedsThe logic
🌳 Wood🔥 FireWood burns and feeds fire
🔥 Fire🌍 EarthFire's ash becomes earth
🌍 Earth⚙️ MetalMetal is mined from the earth
⚙️ Metal💧 WaterMetal condenses dew
💧 Water🌳 WoodWater nourishes trees

The control cycle: elements restrain one another

The second cycle is the control cycle (克, kè): each element holds another in check. This is the balancing mechanism.

ElementControlsThe logic
🌳 Wood🌍 EarthTree roots break up the soil
🌍 Earth💧 WaterEarth absorbs and holds back water
💧 Water🔥 FireWater puts out fire
🔥 Fire⚙️ MetalFire melts metal
⚙️ Metal🌳 WoodMetal cuts wood
In your chart, these cycles are always at work. If you have a lot of Wood and little Metal, the Wood goes unchecked and can surface as excessive control or irritability. The point of the analysis is to spot the imbalance and figure out how to correct it.

Elements and areas of life

Each element is tied to specific areas of life — and its condition in your chart directly affects those areas:

How to find your imbalance

After your chart is calculated, you'll see an "element bar" — a visual breakdown of how much of each element you carry. That's the starting point for the analysis.

Elements with zero or just one mark are candidates for "voids" (空). Their absence from the chart isn't always a bad thing, but it does call for attention. Sometimes it means the corresponding area of life requires conscious effort.
