The Water element (水, shuǐ) in Wu Xing is the deepest phase of the cycle — the phase of rest, storage and concentrated potential. It is the "winter" element, and so it is linked to what we keep at the very core of the body: Jing essence, the hereditary potential passed down by our parents. At the organ level this is the kidneys and bladder, the reproductive system, the bones, bone marrow, brain, ears and the hair on the head.
This article is an in-depth look at how the Water element in a BaZi chart relates to the health of the kidneys and the reproductive sphere. If your Day Master is Ren 壬 or Gui 癸, or if your chart shows a sharp excess or deficiency of Water, this material is directly relevant to you.
1 The Kidney Meridian in Traditional Chinese Medicine
The Kidney meridian (足少陰腎經, zú shào yīn shèn jīng) is the "deepest" meridian in the body. It begins on the sole of the foot (point Yong Quan, 涌泉, "Gushing Spring"), runs up the inner side of the leg to the kidneys, then to the bladder, and rises to the chest and throat. Its paired Bladder meridian is the longest in the body, running down the back of the body from the eye to the little toe.
Functions of the kidneys in TCM:
- They store Jing (藏精, cáng jīng) — this is a unique function. Jing is the "primal matter" of life: half inherited from the parents (prenatal Jing), half accumulated over a lifetime (postnatal Jing). Spending Jing = aging and disease.
- They govern the bones and bone marrow (主骨生髓) — the condition of bones, teeth, spinal cord and brain.
- They "open into the ears" (開竅於耳) — hearing and the condition of the ears.
- They "manifest in the hair" (其華在髮) — the condition of the hair, especially graying.
- They govern water (主水) — the body's water-salt metabolism.
- They govern reproduction — the menstrual cycle in women, potency in men, the ability to conceive.
- They "grasp Qi" (主纳气) — the kidneys "receive" the Qi sent down by the lungs and hold it within.
2 Water and the Emotion of Fear
The "root emotion" of Water is fear (恐, kǒng) and its subtler version fright (惊, jīng, which can also be translated as "shock"). The connection works in both directions:
- Weak kidneys → constant background fear. When Jing is depleted, there is no "root" of confidence; a person becomes anxious, timid, suspicious. Fears about the future, about death, about losing loved ones are especially characteristic.
- Strong fear → a blow to the kidneys. Acute fright literally "falls apart" the kidneys. The expression "to wet oneself from fear" is no accident — it is a precise physiological reaction: fear temporarily switches off the kidneys' control over the sphincters.
Chronic background fear is especially dangerous. This is social fear, fear about money, fear of aging, fear of loneliness. It depletes Jing day after day, never letting you recover. That is why working with fears in psychotherapy is direct support for the kidneys.
Modern neuroscience confirms this beautifully: cortisol (the hormone of fear and stress), when chronically high, destroys bones, muscles, immunity and the reproductive system. In other words, everything that TCM attributes to the kidneys.
3 Weak Water = Fatigue, Impotence, Infertility
When there is little Water in the chart (under 5–7%) or the Water Day Master has no support, we speak of "empty" Water. This is the most worrying pattern from the standpoint of a long, healthy life, because Jing is your "fuel tank."
The clinical picture of weak Water
- Chronic deep fatigue, especially "bone" fatigue — it feels as though your bones are tired;
- Lower-back pain, especially of a dull character;
- Weakness in the knees, "wobbly" legs;
- Reduced libido in both sexes;
- Impotence in men;
- Infertility, anovulatory cycles in women;
- Early menopause (before 45);
- Early graying (before 30);
- Early hair loss;
- Hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus);
- Frequent nighttime urination (nocturia);
- Cold legs, especially the feet;
- Anxiety, phobias, fears with no obvious cause;
- Memory decline, especially for recent events;
- Osteoporosis, frequent fractures;
- Tooth decay, periodontal disease.
Chart indicators
- Day Master Ren or Gui in a summer month (巳 Snake, 午 Horse, 未 Goat) without roots;
- Absence or a single instance of Water against strong Earth or abundant Fire;
- A "parched" chart — lots of Fire and Earth, no Water or Metal.
4 Strong Water = Edema, Depression, Libido
The opposite situation: 40% or more Water, a Water Day Master in the winter season with triple support. This is "stagnant" Water, a swamp.
The clinical picture of strong Water
- Chronic edema, especially toward evening;
- Cellulite, a tendency to lymphostasis;
- Cystitis, especially chronic;
- Urolithiasis (kidney stones);
- Hydronephrosis, impaired urine outflow;
- Depression of the "cold" type with deep fear;
- Hypothyroidism;
- Low blood pressure, a tendency to hypotension;
- Heavy menstruation with clots in women;
- Episodes of compulsive libido amid general coldness;
- Hyperactivity of the thyroid gland (via the link with Jing);
- Chronic fears, suspiciousness, hypochondria;
- A constant "flooding" by emotions, the feeling of "drowning" in problems.
5 Chart Signs: Water Attacked by Earth
In the Wu Xing cycle, Earth controls Water (Earth "absorbs" and "smothers" Water). When the chart has strong Earth without balance, it "presses down" on Water — this creates kidney problems.
Specific configurations
- 壬 Ren + 戊 Wu adjacent — yang Earth controls yang Water. If this pair is on the month or hour pillar, expect chronic kidney problems and a risk of pyelonephritis and nephropathies.
- 癸 Gui + 己 Ji — yin Earth "smothers" yin Water. Cystitis, kidney stones, gynecological inflammations.
- 子 Rat in the chart + 丑 Ox in Da Yun — the Ox "binds" the Rat, halting its Water. Cycles of kidney disease.
- 亥 Pig + 辰 Dragon or 戌 Dog — Earth absorbs the Water of the Pig.
Chronic stress is especially dangerous in such a configuration — stress activates "overthinking" (the Earth element) and through it strikes at "fear" (the Water element).
6 Bones, Teeth, Ears — the Organs of Water
Beyond the kidneys themselves, Water governs several structures that TCM regards as indicators of Jing.
Bones and teeth
"The kidneys govern the bones." The condition of the skeletal system is a direct reflection of Jing:
- Osteoporosis in women after menopause — a mass clinical pattern of Jing depletion;
- Early dental problems, decay, periodontal disease — weak Jing;
- Frequent fractures — weak bones (Jing fails to nourish them);
- Slow healing of fractures — Jing cannot cope;
- Late teeth in children, slow eruption — congenital weakness of Jing;
- Lower-back pain — especially "morning" pain — a signal of weak kidneys.
Ears and hearing
"The kidneys open into the ears." The link between the kidneys and hearing is one of the best-confirmed in Eastern medicine:
- Tinnitus (noise, ringing in the ears) — a classic sign of weak Jing;
- Progressive hearing loss with age — Jing depletion;
- Ménière's disease (vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss) — a deep kidney disorder;
- Hearing loss from childhood — congenital weakness of Jing.
Hair
"The kidneys manifest in the hair":
- Early graying (before 30) — Jing depletion;
- Hair loss, especially in young men — weak Jing;
- Thin, dull, brittle hair — weak blood and Jing;
- Sudden shedding after stress — acute kidney depletion.
The brain
In TCM the brain is the "sea of marrow," and its nourishment is the Jing of the kidneys. Therefore weak Jing = poor memory, slow thinking, declining cognitive function. Dementia and Alzheimer's are interpreted in TCM as a profound depletion of Jing.
7 Prevention for Water
The main strategy is preserving Jing. It is the body's most precious energy, and it cannot be bought or fully restored. It can only be spent slowly or quickly.
What depletes Jing (to be avoided)
- Chronic sleep deprivation — the most destructive factor. Less than 7 hours of sleep = a constant drain on Jing;
- Excessive sexual activity in men — especially with ejaculation. Classical TCM has norms by age;
- Chronic stress and fear — cortisol destroys Jing;
- Getting chilled, especially the lower back and the feet;
- Fasting and harsh diets — especially prolonged ones;
- Heavy physical loads without recovery (marathons, CrossFit without measure);
- Pregnancies and childbirth — each pregnancy spends Jing (which is why TCM recommends at least 2–3 years between births);
- Stimulants — caffeine, nicotine, amphetamines — they give "temporary energy" by taking it from the kidneys.
What preserves and nourishes Jing
- Full sleep of 7–9 hours;
- Keep the lower back and feet warm — never walk barefoot on a cold floor, never sit on something cold;
- Regular gentle activity — walking, swimming, qigong, tai chi;
- Meditation, especially seated (as in the Taoist tradition);
- A calm sexual rhythm;
- Working with fears;
- Color: black, dark blue — in clothing and surroundings;
- Direction: north (the direction of Water);
- Sound: "chui" or "sui" on the exhale — the Taoist way of working with the kidneys.
8 Herbs and Foods for Water
Supporting the kidneys is one of the most developed topics in TCM. Hundreds of formulas and herbs are aimed precisely here. Here are the most accessible:
The main classic formula for a deficiency of Kidney Yin is Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (六味地黄丸), the "Six-Flavor Rehmannia Pill." For a deficiency of Kidney Yang — You Gui Wan (右归丸) or Jin Kui Shen Qi Wan (金匮肾气丸).

Calculate chart →9 Da Yun: Years of Heightened Risk for the Kidneys
Two types of Da Yun are especially critical for the kidneys:
Cycles of "a blow to Water" (Earth)
If you have a Water Day Master and a Da Yun arrives with strong Earth (Wu-Xu 戊戌, Wu-Chen 戊辰, Ji-Chou 己丑, Ji-Wei 己未), this is a direct attack on the kidneys. Earth "smothers" Water.
Symptoms: chronic pyelonephritis, nephropathies, cystitis, kidney stones; in women — gynecological inflammations; in men — prostatitis.
Cycles of "parching" (excessive Fire and Earth)
If cycles arrive with strong Fire and Earth at once (Bing-Xu 丙戌, Ding-Wei 丁未), they "parch" the Jing. Infertility, impotence, premature menopause, osteoporosis.
During such a 10-year period it is recommended to:
- Get an annual urinalysis and blood chemistry (creatinine, urea, GFR);
- Have a kidney ultrasound every 1–2 years;
- For women — track the menstrual cycle, check hormones;
- For men — a PSA test after 40–45;
- Wear warm clothing, avoid prolonged chilling;
- No harsh diets;
- Restore your sleep schedule as a priority.
Annual risks
If the chart contains 子 (Rat), then Ox years (丑) can "bind" Water — urological problems. If it contains 亥 (Pig) — Snake years (巳) bring a Fire-Water clash (chong), a risk of acute events.
10 Specific Diagnoses by Configuration
Scenario 1: Weak Water without support
Day Master Ren or Gui in a summer month, without roots in the branches, minimal Metal.
- Functional infertility;
- Premature menopause (before 45);
- Chronic deep fatigue;
- Early-onset osteoporosis;
- Tinnitus, progressive hearing loss.
Scenario 2: Strong Water in excess
Day Master Ren or Gui in a winter month, 3+ Water signs in the chart.
- Chronic edema syndrome;
- Kidney stones;
- Depression of the "cold" type with phobias;
- Hypothyroidism;
- Gynecological inflammations in women (Yin-cold in the lower burner).
Scenario 3: Water attacked by Earth
Water is present, but strong Earth or a Pig-Dragon / Rat-Ox clash is adjacent.
- Chronic pyelonephritis;
- Glomerulonephritis;
- Cystitis with flare-ups;
- In men — chronic prostatitis;
- In women — ovarian cysts, endometriosis with an inflammatory component.
Scenario 4: Parched chart (no Water + strong Fire)
Water is entirely absent from the chart amid strong Fire and Earth.
- Infertility, especially in women;
- Impotence of the endocrine type;
- Premature aging;
- Dryness of the skin, mucous membranes and eyes (Sjögren's syndrome);
- Early graying and hair loss;
- Chronic thirst, a tendency to diabetes.
Scenario 5: Jing-Shen Bu Jiao (the non-union of Jing and Shen)
A sharp split in the chart: the top (stems) — Fire and Wood, the bottom (branches) — Water and Earth without a link.
- Insomnia with anxiety + lower-back weakness;
- "Hot flashes" with cold legs;
- Impotence amid high mental arousal;
- Menopausal syndrome in women;
- Panic disorder with a cardiac component.
Jing cannot be "accumulated" like Qi or blood. It can only be managed wisely. Therefore the health strategy for people with vulnerable Water in their chart is a strategy of a long, even way of life: go to bed early, protect the lower back, keep sexual energy within reasonable limits, work with fears, and regularly undergo basic examinations of the kidneys and the reproductive sphere.
