In the BaZi system, beyond the five elements and the ten gods, there exists another layer — Shen-Sha (神煞), or "spirits and punishments": special marker stars that are calculated by fixed formulas and bring particular qualities into a chart. Among them there are auspicious ones (吉神) and inauspicious ones (凶煞). And at the very top of the list of the auspicious stands one — Tianyi Guiren (天乙貴人 (tiān yǐ guì rén — "Heavenly Noble")).
The classic 三命通會 states: «天乙者, 乃天上之神, 在紫微垣閶闔門外, 與太乙並列» — "Tian Yi is a heavenly deity, dwelling outside the gates of Ziwei (the Purple Forbidden Palace), on a par with Tai Yi." This means that in the celestial hierarchy Tianyi stands on the same level as Tai Yi — the supreme stellar emperor. In metaphysics it is the most noble of all the auxiliary stars in a chart.
1 What the Tianyi Guiren star is
Tianyi Guiren (天乙貴人), translated literally, means "Heavenly Singular Noble Person." "Tian" (天) is heaven, "Yi" (乙) here carries the sense of "singular, outstanding," and "Guiren" (貴人) literally means "dear person," that is, a person of high status, a mentor, a patron.
This star embodies in a chart the principle of help from above, of unexpected rescue, of the right person appearing at the right moment. When a BaZi master sees Tianyi in a chart, he immediately notes: this person has an "invisible safety net" — even if they fall into trouble, someone will be found to extend a hand.
Historically this star traces back to the ancient Chinese cult of the stars of the Big Dipper and the Purple Forbidden Palace (紫微垣). According to legend, Tian Yi was the assistant of Tai Yi — the chief deity of the heavenly court — and it was he who conveyed the will of Heaven to people, rescuing the righteous. Therefore Tianyi in a chart is a sign of heavenly justice and intercession.
2 How Tianyi Guiren is calculated
The Tianyi Guiren star is calculated from the Day Master (the heavenly stem of the day of birth) and is sought in the earthly branches of the entire chart — year, month, day and hour. It can also be checked in the luck pillars (Da Yun) and annual pillars (流年 (liú nián — "current year")).
The classical formula was passed down as early as the Tang era in poetic form (歌訣):
丙丁猪鸡位, 壬癸兔蛇藏,
庚辛逢虎馬, 此是貴人方»
In translation: "Jia, Wu, Geng — Ox and Goat; Yi, Ji — Rat and Monkey; Bing, Ding — Pig and Rooster; Ren, Gui — Rabbit and Snake; Geng, Xin — Tiger and Horse — these are the directions of the noble people."
| Day Master (day stem) | Tianyi earthly branches | Element of the branch |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 Jia / 戊 Wu / 庚 Geng | 丑 Chou (Ox) / 未 Wei (Goat) | Earth |
| 乙 Yi / 己 Ji | 子 Zi (Rat) / 申 Shen (Monkey) | Water / Metal |
| 丙 Bing / 丁 Ding | 亥 Hai (Pig) / 酉 You (Rooster) | Water / Metal |
| 壬 Ren / 癸 Gui | 卯 Mao (Rabbit) / 巳 Si (Snake) | Wood / Fire |
| 庚 Geng / 辛 Xin | 寅 Yin (Tiger) / 午 Wu (Horse) | Wood / Fire |
A note for practitioners: there are two classical systems — the "day" and "night" Tianyi. The day version is for people born between sunrise and sunset, the night version for those born during the dark hours. But in most modern schools (especially Joey Yap's) both branches are considered equally effective, so the table is simplified to two universal branches.
An example calculation. If your Day Master is Bing (丙, Yang Fire), then your Tianyi Guiren branches are Hai (亥) and You (酉). If your chart contains at least one of them (in the year, month, day or hour) — the star is active. If both are present — this is the rare case of "double Tianyi," especially auspicious.
3 The position of Tianyi in the pillars
Exactly where Tianyi stands in the chart is critically important. The same calculation yields different meanings depending on the position.
The year pillar (年柱)
Tianyi in the year pillar signifies a "family blessing." This person was born into a family that has figures capable of helping — parents, uncles, a grandfather or grandmother with resources, connections, wisdom. Even if the family was not wealthy, there was someone in it (a teacher, a relative, a neighbor) who proved decisive for the rest of life. In childhood and youth (ages 0–15) this person received support that shaped their trajectory.
The month pillar (月柱)
The strongest position for Tianyi. The month pillar is the "zone of career and social realization" (ages 15–30). Tianyi here means that in one's work a mentor, an angel investor, a guide always appears. This person rarely builds a career alone — they are "promoted" from above. Such people often discover that they are "strangely lucky" with bosses and partners.
The day pillar (日柱)
Tianyi in the day branch is a special configuration. Here the star merges with the bearer's personality. Such a person themselves becomes a "Guiren" for others — they naturally help, mentor, rescue. Such people are often entrusted with secrets; they have "the face of a person you can come to." Also, in the day pillar Tianyi signifies help from a spouse — marriage to a person who literally brings rescue.
The hour pillar (時柱)
Tianyi in the hour affects old age, children and students. Such a person receives help from the younger generation — from their children in old age, from students, from young colleagues who continue their work. This is also a spiritual Tianyi: help from teachers, gurus, higher powers, guardian angels. Many religious practices and strong intuition are associated with Tianyi in the hour.
4 Strong manifestations of Tianyi Guiren
When Tianyi works at full strength, the star's manifestations are concrete and recognizable:
- Luck at critical moments. When it seemed "all was lost," suddenly a solution, a person, a circumstance appears. They are saved from dismissal, an accident, bankruptcy, illness.
- Influential acquaintances. Without particular effort they acquire contacts in high circles. The introductions happen "by chance" — at a wedding, in a queue, on a plane.
- Patrons and mentors. Senior, successful, well-known people take them under their wing. They teach for free, recommend them, help with money.
- Help from strangers. When it is needed, a random person happens to be nearby who solves the problem. An old man with medicine, a driver who gives a lift to the hospital, a passerby with the needed advice.
- Attractiveness to others. People are drawn to such individuals for advice, for help, for "energy." They put others at ease intuitively.
- "Blind luck" in travel and relocation. They miraculously find an apartment, a job, travel companions.
- Ease in crises. When everything is collapsing for others, for Tianyi bearers it "somehow works out."
- The capacity to be a Guiren themselves. With age they discover that their calling is to be such a mentor for others. They close the circle.
5 Weak manifestations — when Tianyi does not work
The star can be "dormant" or even "destroyed." This happens in several cases.
Destruction of Tianyi
- Clash (沖, Chong) — if the earthly branch of Tianyi receives a clash from the opposing branch (for example, Chou–Wei, Zi–Wu, Yin–Shen, Mao–You, etc.) in the chart, a luck pillar or a year. This "knocks out" the star.
- Punishment (刑, Xing) — if the Tianyi branch falls into a "punishment" configuration with other branches. The star is "bound" and loses strength.
- Burial (墓庫, Mu Ku) — if the star is "buried" in Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei and this grave is not "opened" in Da Yun, help does not come.
- Voiding (空亡 (kōng wáng — "emptiness"), Kong Wang) — falling into the "void," a special zone of the chart where elements lose their strength.
When help does not come
- Tianyi is present, but the person lives in seclusion, does not socialize, does not go out — there is no one to help them. The star "sleeps."
- Tianyi is in the chart, but the Day Master is too weak or too strong — there is no proper "tuning" to receive help.
- Tianyi is in the "void" (Kong Wang) — help is promised but does not come. Friends promise to help but forget. Mentors appear and then vanish.
- A chart with a strong "Jie Sha" star (劫煞, robbery) or "Yang Ren" (羊刃 (yáng rèn — "the goat's blade"), the blade) — Tianyi may lead to traps, false mentors, swindlers masquerading as rescuers.
6 Combinations of Tianyi with other stars
The power of Tianyi increases many times over when it is combined with other auspicious stars. And conversely, it is lost when it intersects with destructive ones.
Auspicious combinations
- Tianyi + Wen Chang (文昌 (wén chāng — "Literary Star")) — "heavenly mentor + literary star." A teacher comes and opens the academic path. Careers in science, education, literature.
- Tianyi + Tiande (天德) + Yuede (月德) — "triple heavenly blessing." A very rare and strong configuration. A life under the protection of higher powers.
- Tianyi + Jiangxing (將星 (jiàng xīng — "the General Star"), the general star) — a leader with helpers. A commander, the director of a large company, a politician who always has "their own retinue" and patrons above.
- Tianyi + Huagai (華蓋 (huá gài — "the flower canopy"), the canopy) — a wise loner to whom people come for advice, and who is himself helped by higher powers. Often — mystics, healers, spiritual teachers.
- Tianyi + Tianyi (double) — a double blessing. Help comes from two sides at once — for example, from both family and career mentors.
Complex combinations
- Tianyi + Tao Hua (桃花 (táo huā — "the peach blossom"), peach blossom) — help comes through romantic ties. A partner becomes a Guiren. This can be a blessing — or a curse, if the relationship is dubious.
- Tianyi + Yi Ma (驛馬 (yì mǎ — "the traveling horse"), the horse star) — help comes in travel, through relocation and foreigners. Very auspicious for those who work abroad.
- Tianyi + Yang Ren (羊刃, the blade) — ambiguous. Help comes, but through harsh, sometimes painful circumstances. A "surgeon" who saves by inflicting pain.
7 Activation of Tianyi in Da Yun and the annual pillars
The most practically important thing is the activation of Tianyi in the luck pillars (大運 (dà yùn — "luck pillars")) or in the annual pillars (流年). This means that in a certain period of life the star "ignites," and the bearer receives help especially vividly.
Activation through the luck pillars
If one of the 10-year luck pillars brings a branch that is the Tianyi Guiren for your Day Master — this is a "decade of noble help." During this time:
- The needed people appear.
- One's career gains patronage from above.
- Financial help comes when it is needed.
- In critical situations one is "magically" lucky.
- One may meet a spouse who will become a Guiren for life.
Activation through the years (流年)
When a specific year carries a Tianyi branch — for example, 2025 (the year of Si 巳) for a Ren master or a Gui master — that year becomes a "year of rescue." Especially if the person found themselves in a crisis the previous year. Tianyi arrives "right on time."
Activation through branches and combinations
Tianyi can be "activated" through combinations with a branch already present in the chart. For example, if a Bing master has You (Tianyi) in the chart, and Chen arrives in Da Yun — they combine (辰酉合金), and Tianyi is strengthened. These are very subtle techniques that a BaZi master reads within the full chart.

Bearers of an active Tianyi Guiren often choose (or life "leads" them into) professions where they themselves become such "heavenly helpers" for others.
Ideal fields for Tianyi bearers
- Medicine and healing — especially those branches where one "rescues": intensive care, oncology, emergency medicine, psychiatry, palliative care.
- Social work, charity — helping orphans, the homeless, the severely ill.
- Mentoring, coaching, guidance — business consulting, life coaching, academic tutoring.
- Psychology and psychotherapy — people literally "come to them in a difficult moment."
- Law, especially advocacy and human rights work — defending those who cannot defend themselves.
- Education, especially work with troubled teenagers or the gifted — opening the path for others.
- Diplomacy, international organizations — mediation in crises.
- HR and recruiting — they literally "find people jobs," that is, they act as Guirens.
- Financial consulting, business banking — saving businesses from bankruptcy.
- Religious and spiritual service — priests, monks, spiritual mentors.
- Journalism that exposes injustice — they "rescue" through information.
- Venture capital, angel investing — literally "business angels."
Professions where Tianyi is especially valued by clients
A bearer of strong Tianyi attracts trust. Therefore in fields where trust is the basis of the sale, they become stars:
- Private bankers for VIP clients.
- Family lawyers with a client base built over many years.
- Personal physicians of well-known people.
- Matchmakers and marriage consultants.
- Family elders to whom everyone comes for decisions.
9 Famous bearers of Tianyi (abstract cases)
Although the personal charts of specific celebrities are a contentious subject, in the practice of BaZi masters certain typical cases stand out in which a strong Tianyi Guiren was clearly at work:
The "Mother Teresa" case
A chart type: a missionary, a spiritual mentor whose life was a succession of "rescues" of others — and of personal escapes from heavy trials. Such people often have Tianyi in the hour pillar and the day pillar at once, which turns all of life into the service of a "heavenly helper."
The "healer to whom people come from everywhere" case
The archetype of the old Eastern physician, a healer of traditional medicine. People come to him when modern medicine has not helped. Such people have Tianyi in the month pillar plus Huagai (the canopy) — the configuration of a wise loner with a healing mission.
The "magnate-philanthropist" case
A businessman who, having grown rich, founded a charitable fund. In such people Tianyi is often combined with wealth stars and the Tiande star, which creates the pattern of "received in order to give."
The "universal mentor" case
The archetype of a person to whom both presidents and beggars come for advice. Remarkably, the cases show that such people often have humble origins — yet possess "a face on which is written: come." This is the work of Tianyi in the day pillar.
The "rescued at the last moment" case
They not only become Guirens themselves, but in their own biography there is a string of stories of "miraculous rescues." An illness detected by chance. An accident narrowly avoided. A financial collapse from which an unexpected phone call saved them. In such people Tianyi is often activated in several luck pillars in a row.
10 Practical application — what to do if you have Tianyi
Knowing about Tianyi in your chart is not passive information. It is a tool. Here is how to work with it.
If Tianyi is present and active
- Do not close yourself off. The main mistake of Tianyi bearers is isolation. If you sit at home, trust no one and socialize with no one, help will not find you. Open the door.
- Ask for help. Tianyi does not work if you stubbornly "do everything yourself." This is not "weakness," it is the activation of the star. Learn to say "I need help."
- Trust your intuition about people. If someone has "strangely" appeared in your life — pay attention. It may be that very Guiren.
- Be grateful. Do not take help for granted. Gratitude is the "fuel" of Tianyi. Those who do not give thanks lose the star.
- Become a Guiren yourself. Help others selflessly. This multiplies the power of your own Tianyi.
- Use the activation period (Da Yun). If your Tianyi is activated in the current decade — this is a time for bold decisions, because "support from above" is with you.
If Tianyi is absent or destroyed
- Activate it through your environment. Find a mentor, a guide, a psychotherapist — literally "hire" a Guiren.
- Carry the Tianyi branch. Talismans with the corresponding animal of the Chinese zodiac (for a Ren master — the Rabbit or the Snake, etc.).
- Activate the Tianyi direction in feng shui. Place your workplace or sleeping place in the direction corresponding to the Tianyi branch of your Day Master.
- Enter fields where a Guiren comes naturally. Military service, government structures, large corporations with mentorship programs, the academic environment — there "heavenly mentors" are met more often.
- Cultivate the "face of a Guiren" yourself — help, teach, support. By the principle of the mirror, helpers will come to you too.
In the BaZi system of the Joey Yap and Ziping schools, the Tianyi Guiren star is considered "first among the noble" (第一吉神) not because it is the most "magical," but because it reminds us of the most important principle: destiny unfolds through people. Not through abstract luck, not through "the stars," but through a specific person who happened to be in the right place at the right moment.
If your chart contains Tianyi — this does not mean your life will be easy. It means that in the hardest moments you will not be left alone. Someone will extend a hand. Sometimes — an old acquaintance. Sometimes — a complete stranger. Sometimes — a circumstance that looks like a miracle. Your task is to be open, grateful and ready to receive.
And if you do not have Tianyi — do not despair. The Shen-Sha stars are only one layer of the chart. Far more important are the overall structure, the balance of the five elements, the luck pillars. And even without Tianyi a person can build around themselves an "artificial network of noble people" through conscious service, teaching, openness. Tianyi can be born, and it can be cultivated. Heaven answers both paths.
