比肩 Shoulder to Shoulder —
the strength of the team and the rivalry of equals

The name 比肩 (bǐ jiān) literally means "shoulder beside shoulder" — the image of two warriors standing side by side. This is the most intuitive metaphor in the Ten Gods system: 比肩 is a person of your level, of your nature, "cut from the same cloth." A brother, a sister, a classmate, a former colleague, a business partner — people with whom you share something fundamental.

The mechanics: 比肩 is the same element as your 日主 (rì zhǔ — "Day Master"), with the same polarity. If your 日主 is 甲 Jia (Yang Wood), then 比肩 is also 甲 Jia. If it is 乙 Yi (Yin Wood) — 比肩 is also 乙. It is precisely this sameness of nature that makes 比肩 both an ally and a rival at once.

1 比肩 as support: when it is a blessing

For a weak 日主 (a 日主 that needs support) 比肩 is a source of strength. Picture a person with few resources — tired, depleted. People "of their own circle" appear, who share the burden, lend energy, support them in a hard moment. This is the benevolent function of 比肩.

Here 比肩 shows its dark side. In the Five Elements system, Wealth (財星, the wealth star) is the element your 日主 controls. If 比肩 also lays claim to controlling that same element, the money gets "split" between you. It is like two people pulling a blanket toward themselves.

In practical terms: a lot of 比肩 in the chart = financial difficulties through collaboration. Business partners take the income. Competitors work in your market. Relatives ask to borrow money. The feeling that you are earning — yet there is no money.

For women

For a woman, 比肩 represents female friends and sisters. A strong 比肩 in a woman's chart means an active female circle: many friends, sisters, female colleagues. This is good for social support. But in the romantic context: if there is a lot of 比肩 and it "attacks" the husband star (正官 or 七殺) — competition for the partner. Friends, willingly or not, draw the man's attention away.

For men

For a man, 比肩 represents brothers, male colleagues, competitors. A strong 比肩 = a vivid male environment, a crew of "your own." The weak side: competition with equals for career positions.
