An important caveat before you read. The "Year of the Rabbit" is merely one earthly branch out of the eight characters of your BaZi chart (1/8 of the information). Character, destiny and compatibility are determined by all four pillars, not by the "year sign." For details, see the article on the truth about year signs. Everything below describes only the year layer.

New Year forecasts "for Rabbits" promise peace, luck and calm. It sounds sweet — but in genuine Chinese metaphysics 🐇 the Rabbit is not a "zodiac sign" but 卯 (mǎo — Rabbit) — the fourth of the twelve earthly branches, the peak of spring. Let's unpack what the Year of the Rabbit actually carries in BaZi.

Mǎo · Rabbit
mǎo · Yin Wood 陰木 (yīn mù) · mid-spring

1 What the Year of the Rabbit 卯 means in BaZi

The branch 卯 (mǎo — Rabbit) is the zenith of spring Wood. If 寅 (yín — Tiger) was just breaking through the soil, then 卯 is mid-spring (around March 6 in the solar calendar, the node 驚蟄 (jīngzhé — "the awakening of insects")), when growth is already in full force, everything is blooming and reaching for the sun.

That is why 卯 carries the energy of blossoming, flexibility, grace. It is the most "gentle" and refined Wood of all the branches: not a battering ram like the Tiger, but a vine, a flower, supple grass. In a BaZi chart the year branch describes the pillar of one's ancestors and the first ~16 years of life — the atmosphere in which a person was shaped.

In the system of the twelve branches, 卯 (mǎo — Rabbit) sits in the phase of 帝旺 (dìwàng — "imperial flourishing") for Wood — the absolute peak of wood Qi. If the Tiger was a young general, then the Rabbit is a mature ruler at the zenith: all the power is already here, but it expresses itself not through crude force but through confident softness. The strongest does not mean the harshest — this is the Rabbit's central paradox. The most powerful Wood of the year looks like the most delicate sprout, and it is precisely this deceptive softness that is its true strength.

Note the calendar subtlety too: the Year of the Rabbit in BaZi begins neither on January 1 nor at the Lunar New Year, but at its own solar node. The Rabbit's season itself opens with the node 驚蟄 (jīngzhé — "the awakening of insects") around March 6, while the count of the year is reckoned from 立春 (lìchūn — "the establishing of spring") ~February 4. So those born at the turn of January–February must absolutely check the exact solar date.

2 The hidden stems 藏干 of the Rabbit branch

The depth of any branch lies in its hidden stems 藏干 (cáng gān — "hidden heavenly stems"). And here the Rabbit is unique: unlike the Tiger, rich with three stems, 卯 (mǎo — Rabbit) is a pure branch with a single hidden stem:

Such "purity" makes the Rabbit concentrated and predictable: all its energy is one clear quality, Yin Wood 乙. No hidden contradictions within, as in the "multilayered" branches. So 卯 is the most "wood-of-wood" of all branches, the benchmark of Yin Wood in the system.

The practical consequence of this purity is enormous. When a branch contains several hidden stems (like 寅 (yín — Tiger) with its three), its behavior depends on which stem "activates" in the chart. The Rabbit has no such choice: 乙 (yǐ — Wood) always works in the same clear and focused way. This makes 卯 a reliable "amplifier" of the wood theme — but also more vulnerable: it has no inner Fire or Earth to cushion the blow if Metal 金 (jīn) comes crashing down on it.

Compare: 乙 (yǐ — Yin Wood) is not the mighty trunk 甲 (jiǎ), but a vine, grass, a flower. The vine does not resist the wind — it bends and wraps around a support. So the Rabbit in a chart often "leans" on stronger elements, using them as a trellis for its own growth. This is not weakness but a survival strategy: grass outlasts the storm that breaks the oak.

🌿Why this matters: when 卯 (mǎo — Rabbit) is present in a chart, it brings pure, undiluted 乙 (yǐ — Wood). This makes the Rabbit's influence clear, but also more "single-directional" — it amplifies the chart's wood theme without side elements.

3 The character of the Year of the Rabbit (only the year layer!)

We emphasize again: below is a description of only the year branch, not the whole person. At the level of the year layer, 卯 (mǎo — Rabbit) gives the following set of traits:

At the level of lineage this often means a cultured, refined family line — ancestors connected with art, education, diplomacy, trade, the elegance of everyday life.

The mechanics of the Rabbit's indecision deserve a separate word. Yin Wood 乙 (yǐ) grows in all directions at once — the vine does not choose one direction, it tries many. At the level of character this gives a wealth of options, but also the agony of choice: the Rabbit sees too many paths and is afraid to cut off the extras. In a favorable chart with a "backbone" (strong Earth 土 (tǔ) or decisive Metal 金 (jīn) in the right role), this multidirectionality turns into diplomatic flexibility. In an unfavorable one — into perpetual wavering and dependence on others' opinions.

Another important trait of the year Rabbit is peaceableness and a rejection of open aggression. Where the Tiger goes in for a frontal attack, the Rabbit seeks a graceful detour, an alliance, a compromise. This makes it a wonderful negotiator and mediator, but sometimes also leads it to avoid a necessary conflict to the detriment of its own interests.

The Rabbit does not break the barrier as the Tiger does — it finds a graceful way around. But flexibility without a backbone turns into indecision.

4 The element and season of the Rabbit

The element of 卯 (mǎo — Rabbit) is Yin Wood 陰木 (yīn mù), the season is mid-spring (March, the node 驚蟄). This is Wood in full bloom: the force of growth Qi has reached its peak, everything is green and flowering.

ElementWood 木 (mù), Yin polarity
SeasonMid-spring (March)
Hidden stem乙 (yǐ — Yin Wood) — a pure branch

Trigram震 (zhèn — Thunder)

Because 卯 is blooming, gentle Wood, it especially values Water 水 (shuǐ) for nourishment and fears strong Metal 金 (jīn): the axe is deadly to the vine. An excess of Fire 火 (huǒ) also "burns" the delicate plant.

5 Compatibility: harmonies 三合 and clashes 沖

In genuine BaZi, "sign compatibility" is not "the Rabbit loves the Goat" but specific interactions of earthly branches. For 卯 (mǎo — Rabbit) there are three key ones.

Three harmony 三合 (sān hé — "Three Harmony")

The Rabbit is the center of the wood trio 亥卯未 (hài-mǎo-wèi):

The Rabbit here is the "king" (旺) of the trio: it amplifies the wood element to the maximum. With the Pig (Water nourishes) and the Goat (a storehouse-root), the Rabbit forms a powerful energetic unity.

Harmony 六合 (liù hé — "Six Harmony")

The Rabbit's pairing harmony is 卯戌合 (mǎo-xū hé) with the Dog:

This is "wood gives life to fire": the Rabbit and the Dog are drawn together, forming a warm, passionate union — often romantic or a faithful partnership.

Clash 沖 (chōng — "Clash")

The opposite of harmony is the 卯酉冲 (mǎo-yǒu chōng) with the Rooster:

The Rooster's Metal "chops" the Rabbit's delicate Wood. This is an axis of change along the east-west line: relocations, breakups, relationship crises. But a clash is not a verdict — it is movement and renewal; many strong stories are built on this dynamism.

The axis 卯酉冲 (mǎo-yǒu chōng) is the classic "east against west" (震 zhèn — Thunder against 兌 duì — Lake). In a reading it often points to abrupt turns in one's personal life and a change of surroundings. For the Rabbit's gentle Wood, an encounter with the sharp Metal of the Rooster is especially painful — it has no inner buffer. So in the years that activate this axis, the Rabbit should take particular care of its relationships and not make sharp decisions in the heat of the moment. But that same force of the clash is able to "cut away" the obsolete and clear space for the new — it all depends on whether Metal is favorable in the person's full chart.

The principle: compatibility in BaZi is the compatibility of charts, not of "year signs." Two "Rabbits" can be incompatible, while a textbook "Rabbit and Rooster" pair may be a perfect match if the structures of their charts complement each other.

6 Rabbit birth years

The year is counted by the solar calendar (the node 立春 (lìchūn — "the establishing of spring") ~February 4), not by January 1. Those born in late January – early February should check the exact date. Below are the years of the branch 卯 (mǎo — Rabbit):

YearYear pillar (stem+branch)Type of Rabbit by the stem's element
1975乙卯 (yǐ-mǎo)Wood Rabbit — pure aesthete, diplomat
1987丁卯 (dīng-mǎo)Fire Rabbit — warm, expressive
1999己卯 (jǐ-mǎo)Earth Rabbit — practical, caring
2011辛卯 (xīn-mǎo)Metal Rabbit — graceful, yet firm
2023癸卯 (guǐ-mǎo)Water Rabbit — gentle, intuitive

Note: all five are "Rabbits," but 乙卯 (yǐ-mǎo) and 辛卯 (xīn-mǎo) are different people. The pop horoscope does not distinguish this; BaZi does.

7 Strengths and weaknesses of the Rabbit

💪
Strengths
Diplomacy and tact. Refined taste and aesthetics. Flexibility and adaptability. The ability to charm and smooth over conflicts. The tenacity of the "vine" 乙.
Weaknesses
Indecision. Avoiding conflict to one's own detriment. Sensitivity to criticism. A tendency to depend on a support or a partner.

The Rabbit's key balance is finding an inner backbone. The flexibility of 卯 (mǎo) is wonderful, but without the support of Earth 土 (tǔ) and a clear direction it turns into perpetual wavering.

8 Career and money of the Rabbit

At the year layer, 卯 (mǎo — Rabbit) gravitates toward roles that require taste, contact and subtlety:

With money the Rabbit is careful and inclined toward comfort, loving quality and beautiful things. Wealth (財 cái) for the Rabbit is Earth 土 (tǔ): stable ground gives its "roots" support and material security. Important: whether Earth is actually favorable in your particular chart is determined by the Day Master, not the year branch.

The financial strategy of the year Rabbit is not aggressive seizure, but gradual "growth all around": connections, reputation, soft influence that monetizes over time. The Rabbit rarely grows rich in a sprint, as the Tiger does; it builds prosperity through a network of relationships and through quality, not through risk. Its career and money bloom, as with any sign, are determined by the luck pillars 大運 (dà yùn): when a period arrives that provides the missing support and a platform for self-expression, the modest Rabbit is able to outdo far more "pushy" rivals — precisely because everyone likes it and no one perceives it as a threat.

9 Love and relationships of the Rabbit

In love the year Rabbit is romantic, devoted, seeking harmony. It values the beauty of a relationship, tenderness and emotional subtlety, but fears sharp conflict.

But again: the spouse palace is the day branch, not the year one. True compatibility is read from the birth day of both partners, while the Rabbit in the year only hints at the "backdrop of the relationship."

Tip: if you are a "Rabbit" and your partner is a "Rooster" — don't rush to believe the textbook "clash." Check both day pillars: sometimes a couple that is "conflicting by year" is drawn together at the day level.

10 Why you need the full chart

We have gone through every layer of the Year of the Rabbit — but this, we repeat, is 1/8 of the picture. What does any "forecast for Rabbits" miss?

8 characters + Day Master + luck pillars 大運 (dà yùn) + annual forecast 流年 (liú nián). Individual, per the Joey Yap canon.

Only the Day Master (日主 — rì zhǔ, "master of the day") will tell you what the Rabbit means for you personally: for one person 卯 is resource-support (印), for another a rival-friend (比劫), for a third an expression of talent (食傷). The very same "Year of the Rabbit" reverses its meaning depending on the structure of the chart.

So next time you hear "you're a Rabbit, you need...," remember: that is just one letter of the alphabet. To read the whole word of destiny, you need all eight characters and the 大運 cycles.
