The most common question people bring to a BaZi Master is: "What should I do with my life?" And the most common answer in bad fortune-telling sounds like "you have strong Wood, do something wood-related — forestry, furniture, paper." This is not the canon. The true canon of the Ziping school and Joey Yap reads profession through the Ten Gods (十神) and through the Yong Shen (用神 (yòng shén — "Useful God")), the useful element of the chart. This article is a complete manual: which chart structure produces which kind of professional.

1 The principle: your best work = your Yong Shen

The Yong Shen (用神) is the "useful god," the element the chart reaches for the way a plant reaches for light. To find the Yong Shen is to find the axis of your life. A profession that engages your Yong Shen delivers three things at once: financial growth, enjoyment of work, and health.

用神
Yong Shen · Useful God
yòng shén · the key to the chart

The Yong Shen is determined through the structure of the chart: if the Day Master is weak, you need elements that strengthen it (Bi Jian, Yin). If it is strong, you need elements that "release" the excess energy (Cai, Guan, Shi Shen). If the chart has a special structure (Cong Cai, Cong Guan, and so on), the Yong Shen may be something entirely different.

The key rule: work that activates your Yong Shen gives you strength. Work that activates the Ji Shen (the harmful god, the opposite of the Yong Shen) drains you, even if it pays well. After 5–7 years of such work — burnout or illness.

The Ten Gods are not divided into "good" and "bad" in themselves. Every god, in the right context, is favorable. But the dominant Ten-God of the chart — the one most vividly expressed through the Month pillar or through roots in the branches — forms your professional archetype. Let's go through them one by one.

2 Zheng Guan 正官 (zhèng guān — "Direct Officer") — corporation, bureaucracy, civil service

Zheng Guan is "proper authority." In a man's chart it is discipline and rank; in a woman's chart it is the husband. Archetypally, Zheng Guan is the classic careerist within a hierarchy: someone who understands the rules, knows how to work inside a system, and is willing to serve a corporation or the state.

Ideal professions

How to recognize "your" Zheng Guan

A Zheng Guan chart usually has: a visible Guan in the Month or Hour stem; Yin (resource) nourishing the Day Master; a clean structure without excessive Shang Guan (Shang Guan "kills" Guan). The Day Master is more often medium-strong or strong — otherwise the load of Zheng Guan breaks it.

Famous Zheng Guan destinies: prime ministers, heads of major banks, board chairmen. In a corporation they rise to the No. 2 or No. 3 position, overtaking more brilliant but less systematic colleagues.

3 Qi Sha 七殺 (qī shā — "Seven Killings") — military, security forces, extreme professions

Qi Sha is "seven killings," the dark twin of Zheng Guan. The same element of control, but of the same polarity as the Day Master, so it attacks hard, without rules. This is the star of the warrior, the fighter, the crisis manager.

Ideal professions

When Qi Sha is "useful" and when it "kills"

If the Day Master is strong and the chart contains Shi Shen (the star of self-expression that controls Qi Sha), then Qi Sha turns from a threat into a tool. This is the formula 食神 (shí shén — "Eating God")制殺 — "Shi Shen controls Qi Sha," the classic chart of a general, a commander, a leader in a dangerous industry. But if the Day Master is weak and Qi Sha is uncontrolled — it is the chart of accident, early death, prison.

Qi Sha without control is a sword that cuts down its master. Qi Sha under the control of Shi Shen is a sword in the hand of a commander.

4 Zheng Yin and Pian Yin 正印 (zhèng yìn — "Direct Resource")/偏印 (piān yìn — "Indirect Resource") — science, education

Yin (印) is "resource," the source that nourishes the Day Master. In life it is the parents (especially the mother), teachers, mentors, knowledge, academia. A Yin chart is the scholar, the teacher, the researcher.

Zheng Yin — the academic career

Zheng Yin is the "proper" Yin, the classic academic structure. Professions:

Pian Yin — unconventional knowledge

Pian Yin is the "indirect" Yin, the dark twin. It is linked to the esoteric, the unconventional, the hidden kind of knowledge:

The danger of Yin: an excess of Yin makes a person an eternal student. Plenty of knowledge, plenty of diplomas, yet poverty in real life. This is the chart of the "scholar without money," the professor living on a grant. The solution: the chart must contain Cai or Shang Guan to "release" the knowledge into a result.

5 Shi Shen 食神 — art, hospitality

Shi Shen is the "Eating God," the star of enjoyment, expression, and transmission. In a chart it is the enjoyment of life + the ability to create products: dishes, texts, paintings, music, services. It is the most "pleasant" of the Ten Gods: where Shi Shen is, there is taste, aesthetics, a warm atmosphere.

Ideal professions

Shi Shen + Cai: the ideal commercial structure. Shi Shen generates the product, Cai monetizes it. This is the formula of successful entrepreneurs in the creative industries.

6 Shang Guan 傷官 (shāng guān — "Hurting Officer") — creativity, IT, invention

Shang Guan is "the one who wounds the officer," the anti-authority, the rebel, the innovator. This star "releases" the Day Master's energy into the world, but through provocation, revolution, the breaking of rules. In a chart, Shang Guan is the lone genius, the inventor, the rebel.

Ideal professions

The danger of Shang Guan

Shang Guan "wounds" Guan (the star of rank and order). In practical terms this means: a Shang Guan person finds it hard to work for a boss. He criticizes, breaks, clashes. If he doesn't start his own thing, he becomes the "talented failure" — everyone sees his genius, but no one can work with him.

Shang Guan is Steve Jobs after leaving Apple. Or Elon Musk buying Twitter to remake it "the right way." Without freedom of expression, Shang Guan suffocates.

7 Cai 財 — finance, business, trade

The star of wealth as a professional archetype is the financier, the entrepreneur, the trader. We covered Cai in detail in the article "Wealth in BaZi"; here we focus on the professional facet.

Zheng Cai — corporate finance

Pian Cai — trading and deals

8 Jie Cai and Bi Jian 劫財 (jié cái — "Rob Wealth")/比肩 (bǐ jiān — "Shoulder to Shoulder") — sport, martial arts, politics

These two stars are the twins of the Day Master, the "equal shoulders" and the "robbers of wealth." In a negative light they are dangerous (as described in the article on Cai), but in the right structure they grant strength, competitiveness, team spirit.

Ideal professions

Bi Jian + Cai: the structure of "equals working for a shared pie." In the right configuration (Guan controls Bi Jian) this produces a network owner, a franchise king. Without control — partnership conflict.

9 Combinations = wealth

Individual stars matter, but the real financial destinies are born from combinations. Here are the eight classic wealth combinations from the Ziping canon.

食神生財 (Shi Shen generates Cai)

The most beautiful structure. Creativity produces a product, the product brings money. Archetype: the successful restaurant chef, the brand entrepreneur, the winery owner. The money feels like the "fruit" of the work, without violence to the self.

傷官生財 (Shang Guan generates Cai)

A brilliant idea turns into a product. Archetype: the startup founder, the inventor with patents, the chief designer. The money arrives in waves — a patent, an IPO, the sale of a company.

財官印三全 (Cai, Guan, Yin — all three)

The ideal of the old school. Educated, holds a position, has money. Archetype: the professor-consultant, the scholar-banker, the lawyer-minister. The most "complete" lives.

食神制殺 (Shi Shen controls Qi Sha)

The leader of a dangerous industry. Archetype: the hospital's chief surgeon, the general, the owner of a metallurgical plant. The ability to manage threats.

傷官配印 (Shang Guan with Yin)

A genius with the discipline of knowledge. Archetype: the innovating scholar, the inventor-engineer, the physician-researcher. Creates breakthroughs within the academic system.

正官生印 (Zheng Guan generates Yin)

An official with diplomas. Archetype: the university rector, the minister of education, the chief judge. Power through knowledge.

從財格 (Cong Cai — following wealth)

A special structure: the Day Master is weak, the entire chart is Cai. The DM then "surrenders" and follows wealth. Archetype: the wife of a major businessman, the gold-seeker, the professional gambler, the style icon.

從殺格 (Cong Sha — following the killer)

A special structure: the DM is weak, the entire chart is Qi Sha. Archetype: the army commander, the extreme athlete, the revolutionary leader.

10 Combinations = poverty

And, unfortunately, there are structures in which money simply does not stay. Not "no chance" — but it takes enormous work on oneself.

身弱財旺 (Weak body, strong Cai)

There is plenty of money around, but it cannot be held. Debts, loans, bankruptcy. The solution: strengthen the Day Master through education, health, environment. Do not take on major financial tasks until strengthened.

傷官見官 (Shang Guan meets Guan)

The star of rebellion against the star of power. Constant conflicts with superiors, problems with the law, legal disputes. Without a special correction (Wealth in the middle), the career breaks every 5–7 years.

劫財奪財 (Jie Cai seizes Cai)

Money leaves through those close to you. Partners deceive, friends borrow and never repay, relatives drag you into schemes. The solution: keep your distance from financial relationships with loved ones.

印多身旺 (Much Yin, strong DM, no Cai and no Shang Guan)

The eternal student. There are diplomas, there is no work. Knowledge does not turn into money because there is nowhere to "release" it. The solution: force yourself out into practice — sell the knowledge, teach, consult.

比劫成群, 無官無印 (A crowd of Bi Jian, no Guan, no Yin)

The chart of a "bandit" — much energy, no discipline, no resource. Often the fate of the outcast, the adventurer without luck. The solution: harsh external discipline (army, monastery, sport) that compensates for the absence of internal structure.

Important: a "poverty structure" is not a sentence. It means that in the native chart the money channel is weak. But the Da Yun (Luck Pillars) can bring the needed elements and activate a potential hidden in the chart. Many billionaires looked "hopeless" by structure at the start of life, and by 50 looked as if made of gold.

In the end, your career in BaZi is not "a job" in the Western sense. It is a way to release your energy into the world. Each star has its own channel, and the tragedy of most people is that they "release" their energy through the wrong channel. A Shang Guan person sitting as an accountant suffers in the liver. A Zheng Guan person who leaps into crypto trading loses money and stability. The Shi Shen aesthete working as a sales manager doesn't understand why he feels bad "with a good salary."

To learn your archetype is the first step. To accept it is the second. To rebuild your life around it is the third and the hardest. But it is precisely in this third step that those appear whom the Ziping school called 「明命者」 — "those who understand their destiny." They do not war with themselves; they know exactly what they are, and they walk their own channel.
