One of the most common questions asked of a BaZi (八字, bā zì — "Eight Characters") master sounds like this: "What should I do so I have both money and peace of mind?" And unlike a career-aptitude test, the BaZi chart answers not from the person's self-assessment, but from the real structure of their energies — the elements, the balance, and the Ten Gods (十神, shí shén — "Ten Gods").
1 Why "work by the chart" matters more than trends and salary
Choosing a profession "by salary" or "by trend" is playing someone else's game. IT pays well, but if your chart doesn't carry the elements and gods needed for that field, you will burn out, compete in vain, and envy those for whom it "comes easily."
BaZi offers a different criterion: work should feed your luck, not fight it. When a profession matches the element of the 用神 (yòng shén) and is supported by the right gods, what masters call a "tailwind" occurs: effort yields a disproportionately large result.
2 Profession by the 用神: which industry-element suits you
The 用神 (yòng shén — literally "the god being used," the "Useful God") is the element the chart needs most for balance. It is the heart of career analysis. If the 用神 is identified correctly, the industry is chosen almost automatically: you go into the field whose element matches the 用神.
The logic is simple:
- 🎯 Strong Day Master (日主, rì zhǔ — "Master of the Day"): it needs elements that "spend" it — Output (食傷, shí shāng), Wealth (財, cái), or Control (官殺, guān shā). The industries of these elements are its calling;
- 🌱 Weak Day Master: it needs supporting elements — Resource (印, yìn — "Seal/Resource") or allies (比劫, bǐ jié). A career in these elements gives strength.
In other words, the very same person with a law degree may flourish in one branch of law and stall in another — the difference is which element stands behind that niche. That is why the first step of a career analysis is to determine the 用神, and only then to select the industry.
3 Industries by the Five Elements
Each of the Five Elements (五行, wǔ xíng — "Five Movements") governs its own circle of professions. When the element matches your 用神, these industries work in your favor:
| Element | Character | Industries and professions |
|---|---|---|
| 木 Wood (mù — Wood) | Growth, development, humanism | Education, medicine and pharmaceuticals, ecology, textiles, furniture, publishing, NGOs, plant cultivation |
| 火 Fire (huǒ — Fire) | Energy, visibility, expression | IT and electronics, marketing and advertising, show business, culinary arts, energy, the beauty industry, media |
| 土 Earth (tǔ — Earth) | Stability, support, mediation | Real estate, construction, agriculture, consulting, insurance, HR, warehouse logistics, ceramics |
| 金 Metal (jīn — Metal) | Precision, structure, discipline | Finance and banking, engineering and machinery, law, military and security forces, surgery, jewelry, automotive, audit |
| 水 Water (shuǐ — Water) | Movement, communication, flexibility | Logistics and transport, trade and trading, media and journalism, tourism, fishing, beverages, fintech flows |
4 Profession by the dominant God
If the element of the 用神 sets the industry, then the dominant God from the Ten Gods system sets the role and format of the work. One person with the Fire element will become a bright speaker, another a cold IT engineer: the difference is which God is stronger in the chart.
正官 / 七殺 — management and power
正官 (zhèng guān — "Direct Officer") and 七殺 (qī shā — "Seven Killings," aggressive power) give a pull toward management, hierarchy, discipline. Fields: management, civil service, security forces, the army, law, large corporations. 七殺 is especially strong where toughness and pressure are needed — turnaround work, intelligence services, elite sport.
正財 / 偏財 — money and business
正財 (zhèng cái — "Direct Wealth," steady income) and 偏財 (piān cái — "Indirect Wealth," fluctuating income) are about working with money and resources. Fields: business and entrepreneurship, finance, sales, trade, investment. 偏財 leans toward large deals, risk, multi-stream income; 正財 toward reliable, systematic monetization.
食神 / 傷官 — creativity and self-expression
食神 (shí shén — "Eating God," gentle talent) and 傷官 (shāng guān — "Hurting Officer," a bright rebellious talent) give creative power and the need to express oneself. Fields: art, design, music, writing, public speaking, teaching, cuisine, influence. 傷官 is star quality and unconventionality; 食神 is craft and the pleasure of the process.
正印 / 偏印 — knowledge and spirit
正印 (zhèng yìn — "Direct Seal," classical knowledge) and 偏印 (piān yìn — "Indirect Seal," unconventional knowledge) draw one toward study, research, care, and spirituality. Fields: science, education, medicine, psychology, religion and the esoteric, research, restoration. 偏印 is especially strong in narrow, rare, "niche" disciplines.
比肩 / 劫財 — partnership and competition
比肩 (bǐ jiān — "Equal Shoulder," an equal ally) and 劫財 (jié cái — "Rob Wealth," an aggressive rival) give the energy of the team, of competition, of direct action. Fields: partnership business, sport, sales in competitive markets, freelancing, any "arena" where the strongest wins. 劫財 feels competition and the thrill especially keenly.
What profession is encoded in your chart?
A career reading determines your 用神, your dominant God, and the right industries — the specific fields where your effort will yield the maximum result.
Career Reading · 1000 RUB5 Employment or your own business: what the chart shows
This is one of the central career questions, and BaZi answers it fairly clearly — above all through the strength of the Day Master (日主, rì zhǔ) and through the structure of wealth and power.
| Sign in the chart | Inclination |
|---|---|
| Strong 日主 + strong 財 (cái — Wealth) | Own business: enough energy to "hold" the wealth |
| Weak 日主 + strong 官 (guān — Power) | Employment: more comfortable within a structure, under leadership |
| Strong 偏財 (piān cái) + 比劫 (bǐ jié) | Entrepreneurship, partnerships, multi-stream income |
| Strong 正官 (zhèng guān) + 正印 (zhèng yìn) | A career in a corporation/government structure, vertical advancement |
| Strong 傷官 (shāng guān) | Free flight: freelancing, your own studio, a personal brand |
6 When to change careers: the 大運 decades
The natal chart is static, but luck moves in ten-year periods — the 大運 (dà yùn — "Great Luck," the Luck Pillars). Every ~10 years a new element and new gods enter the chart, and it is precisely these that determine whether the moment is favorable for a change of course.
- 📈 The decade brings the 用神: the best time for a career leap, a move into "your" field, the launch of a business;
- 📉 The decade brings the 忌神 (jì shén): a time for consolidation, not expansion — it is risky to start something new;
- 💰 The decade activates 財 (cái) with a strong 日主: a window for income growth and entrepreneurship;
- 🏛️ The decade activates 官 (guān): promotions, appointments, a rise in status within the structure;
- 🎨 The decade activates 食傷 (shí shāng): a flowering of creativity, of authored and public projects.
So the right question is not "should I change jobs," but "which decade am I now entering and what does it open up." A career change in a favorable period brings ease; the same change in an unfavorable one — struggle and loss.
7 Signs of "the wrong" work in a chart
Sometimes a person feels for years that "something is off" but doesn't understand why. The chart reveals concrete markers of unsuitable work:
- 🚫 An industry in the 忌神 (jì shén) element: the field literally drains your luck — much effort, little return;
- 😓 A role against the dominant God: a creative 傷官 driven into rigid bureaucracy, or a gentle 正印 forced to sell aggressively;
- ⚔️ Constant struggle and conflict: a chart with a strong, uncontrolled 七殺 in an environment where that pressure finds no outlet;
- 🔋 Chronic burnout: a weak 日主 in a role that demands the "spending" of an energy it doesn't have;
- 💸 Money "won't stay": a weak 日主 amid large financial flows — wealth slips "through the fingers."
8 How to align vocation and income
The ideal scenario is when the element of vocation and the element of income coincide. But in real charts they are often different: for example, the vocation lies in creativity (食傷, shí shāng), while the money comes through wealth (財, cái). The good news is that in the Five Elements system 食傷 produces 財 (creativity gives birth to wealth) — meaning creativity can and should be monetized.
- 🎨➡️💰 食傷 → 財: monetize the talent — a product, a brand, an authored course, a service. This is the natural flow of your chart;
- 📚➡️🎨 印 → 食傷: knowledge feeds creativity — expert content, teaching your craft;
- 💰➡️🏛️ 財 → 官: wealth strengthens status — growth from entrepreneur into an industry leader;
- ⚖️ Balance: if the chart holds both the vocation and a channel to money, build your career along this chain of elements, without skipping links.
The key is not to choose between "beloved" and "lucrative," but to find in your chart the generating chain that leads from your talent to money along a natural path.
9 A practical algorithm for determining your profession
Let's gather it all into the step-by-step algorithm a master uses in a career analysis:
- Determine the Day Master (日主) and its strength. Strong or weak — this is the fork for all further analysis;
- Find the 用神 (yòng shén). Which element the chart needs for balance — that is your industry;
- Match the 用神 to the industry-elements (the table in section 3) — obtain a list of suitable fields;
- Identify the dominant God from the Ten Gods — that is your role and format within the industry;
- Determine the format: employment or your own business — through the strength of the 日主 and the 財/官 structure;
- Check the current 大運 decade — whether the moment is favorable for moving right now;
- Find the "talent → income" chain — how to monetize the vocation through the generation of elements.
