When it comes to compatibility, most people think of zodiac signs: "the Rat suits the Dragon but not the Horse." That's an extremely simplified approach. In the BaZi system, compatibility is analyzed not by a single sign but by the full interaction of two charts — all eight characters of each partner.
A genuine compatibility analysis takes into account the elements, the Ten Gods, the hidden stems, and the combinations and clashes between the branches of both charts. This is not fortune-telling — it's a structural breakdown of how two people affect each other at the level of energy.
Why zodiac signs don't work
A zodiac sign is merely the earthly branch of the year of birth. One character out of the eight in your chart. Judging compatibility by a single sign is like assessing a book by a single page.
Two people born in the year of the Rat can have completely different charts: different Day Masters, a different balance of elements, different Luck Pillars. Their compatibility with the same partner will differ dramatically.
The basis of the analysis: the Day Master and the elements
The center of compatibility analysis is the interaction of the Day Masters of the two partners. Your Day Master is your element. The partner's Day Master is their element. Between them arises one of five basic relationships:
- The same element — understanding on an intuitive level, but competition is possible.
- A producing element — one nourishes the other. Good for care, but it can create dependency.
- A controlling element — one disciplines the other. Good for structure, risky for freedom.
- A draining element — one gives energy to the other. Balance is needed, or one will burn out.
- A destroying element — a conflict of energies. It can be passionate, but unstable.
But this is only the first level. The real depth lies in the details.
13 aspects of compatibility
In our system, compatibility analysis includes 13 distinct aspects. Each evaluates a specific facet of the relationship:

Compatibility AnalysisCombinations and clashes of branches
Beyond the elemental analysis, the BaZi system accounts for special interactions between the earthly branches of two charts:
The Six Harmonies (六合, liù hé)
Certain pairs of branches form a union — a deep, harmonious bond. For example, the Rat (子) and the Ox (丑), the Tiger (寅) and the Pig (亥). When such pairs occur between partners' charts, it's a sign of natural attraction and mutual understanding.
The Six Clashes (六冲, liù chōng)
Opposing branches create conflict: the Rat and the Horse, the Ox and the Goat, the Tiger and the Monkey. Clashes between partners' charts point to zones of tension. This is not a verdict — but they are areas that will require conscious work.
The Three Harmonies (三合, sān hé)
Three branches of one element form a powerful triangle: Monkey-Rat-Dragon (Water), Tiger-Horse-Dog (Fire), and so on. When partners' charts jointly form such a triangle, it strengthens the shared element and creates powerful joint potential.
The Ten Gods and roles in relationships
In the BaZi system, a partner isn't an abstract "someone." They occupy a specific role in your chart through the Ten Gods system:
- For a man, the wife is Direct Wealth (正财). The element his Day Master controls.
- For a woman, the husband is Direct Authority (正官). The element that controls her Day Master.
If the Wealth element in a man's chart is strong and present, he "attracts" partnership. If this element is weak or absent, relationships come harder. The same applies to women with the Authority element.
How to interpret the results
When you receive a compatibility analysis, don't look for a simple "match / no match" answer. Instead, pay attention to:
- Strong aspects — these are the foundation of your relationship. The zones where you naturally align. Value them and lean on them.
- Weak aspects — zones that require attention. Not necessarily problems — but areas where awareness and compromise are needed.
- The overall balance — does the partner bring the missing elements into your chart? If so, the relationship will feel like a resource. If not, like an added burden.
Compatibility and the Luck Pillars
Another critically important factor is the synchronization of the Luck Pillars. Two people may be a perfect match by their natal charts, but if their Luck Pillars run in opposite directions, one will be on the rise while the other is in crisis.
And vice versa: a couple with moderate natal compatibility can live wonderfully if their Luck Pillars are synchronized — they pass through similar energies at the same time.
Practical recommendations
Whatever the results of the analysis, here's what's worth remembering:
- Compatibility is not a verdict. Even a "difficult" couple can build a wonderful relationship if both partners are willing to work on themselves.
- Awareness matters more than a match. Understanding the strong and weak zones of your relationship is already half the solution.
- Elements can be compensated for. If a partner reinforces your imbalance, you can correct it through your environment, your activity, your place of residence.
- Timing matters. The same couple can go through wonderful and difficult periods — depending on the current Luck Pillars and the annual energies.
- Don't compare yourself with others. Every couple is unique. What works for some may not work for others — even with similar charts.
