In the Wu Xing system (五行, wǔ xíng — "five elements"), the Earth element (土, tǔ) holds a special place: it belongs to no single season but is present in the inter-seasons — those 18 days when one element gives way to another. Earth is the storehouse, the transformer, the center. In the human body it corresponds to 脾胃 (pí wèi — "spleen and stomach") — a pair of organs that Chinese medicine considers the "root of post-natal Qi" (後天之本, hòu tiān zhī běn).

土脾
Tu Pi · Earth-Spleen
tǔ pí · Earth-Spleen · 土 earth + 脾 spleen

This means: everything you obtain from food after birth — energy, blood, immunity — is created precisely by the 脾胃 system. When Earth in the chart is weak or disturbed, a person chronically cannot transform food into full-fledged Qi. Fatigue, indigestion, excess weight or the inability to gain it — all of these are manifestations of an Earth imbalance.

1 The Spleen and Stomach meridians in TCM

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the Stomach meridian (足陽明胃經, zú yáng míng wèi jīng) is one of the longest. It begins at the eye, runs across the face, neck, chest, and abdomen, and ends at the second toe. Its paired channel — the Spleen meridian (足太陰脾經, zú tài yīn pí jīng) — begins at the big toe and rises along the inner side of the leg to the abdomen and chest.

The hours of organ activity:

Practice: If you constantly feel a loss of energy or a "slump" precisely at 9–11 a.m., this may point to a weakness of the 脾胃 system. A hearty breakfast before 9:00 and a light walk afterward are the simplest support for the Earth meridian.

2 Earth and the emotions: attachment and obsessive thoughts

In Wu Xing each element has a "root emotion." For Earth it is 思 (sī — "pondering," "attachment," "reflection"). Healthy Earth grants the capacity for deep contemplation, care, and nourishing relationships. Pathological Earth is obsessive thinking, an endless "chewing over" of a single subject, anxiety expressed through the digestive system.

Have you noticed that before an exam or an important meeting your stomach aches? That you get so "lost in thought" — literally — that you lose your appetite? This is the classic Earth reaction: stress directly strikes the 脾胃 system. In Western medicine this is called GI psychosomatics (irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia). In TCM — "思虑伤脾" (sī lǜ shāng pí — "pondering injures the spleen").

3 Weak Earth: chronic fatigue and dyspepsia

A weakness of the Earth element in the chart (few Earth signs, an Earth Day Master without support, a season of birth in winter or in an overly damp period) manifests in a number of characteristic symptoms:

😮‍💨
Chronic fatigue
"I eat normally, but I have no energy." A systemic deficiency of Spleen Qi — food comes in, but it isn't transformed into energy. Pallor, muscle weakness.
🤢
Weak digestion
Bloating after eating, loose stools, intolerance of cold food, no feeling of hunger in the morning — all signs of 脾虚 (pí xū — "Spleen Qi deficiency").
💉
Hypoglycemia
Sharp drops in blood sugar 1–2 hours after eating, "ravenous" hunger, irritability when a meal is skipped. Instability of glucose metabolism.
💪
Muscle weakness
In TCM, Earth "governs the muscles and flesh." Weak Earth = poor muscle tone, slow recovery after exertion, a tendency toward myositis.

4 Excess Earth: obesity and insulin resistance

When the chart holds a great deal of Earth (several Earth pillars, an Earth Day Master in an Earth season, without Wood control), there is a systemic overload of the transformative function. The body accumulates but does not expend. This is the pattern of 土湿 (tǔ shī — "damp Earth") — when transformation slows down and nutrients are deposited in the form of "Dampness" (湿, shī).

⚠️ Earth and sweets: In TCM the sweet flavor (甜, tián) nourishes Earth — in moderation. But it is precisely people with an Earth imbalance who have the strongest craving for sugar, which creates a vicious circle: sweets temporarily "nourish" Earth, but in excess they intensify Dampness and disrupt metabolism.

5 Earth in the BaZi chart: the specifics of Day Masters 戊 and 己

If your Day Master (日主, rì zhǔ — "master of the day") is 戊 (wù — Yang Earth, "Mountain") or 己 (jǐ — Yin Earth, "Field"), the health of the 脾胃 system requires special attention throughout life.

戊 Wu Day Master: The Mountain is stable and accumulates, but it can become "rocky" — impenetrable. In the absence of Water in the chart (drainage) — a risk of accumulating Dampness (shi) and stagnation. Under attack from Wood (乙, yi or 甲, jia) — a risk of gastritis, peptic ulcer disease (Wood "pierces" the Earth-stomach).

己 Ji Day Master: The fertile field needs moisture, but not waterlogging. Yin Earth is more sensitive to Dampness. Risks: PCOS, pancreatitis, anxiety disorders with digestive manifestations.

Scenario 1: Wood attacks Earth (木克土)

Strong 甲 (jia — Yang Wood) or 乙 (yi — Yin Wood) in the chart of an Earth Day Master without protection.

  • Gastritis, peptic ulcer disease of the stomach and duodenum;
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS);
  • Pancreatitis — under an acute attack;
  • Impaired enzymatic function of the pancreas.

Scenario 2: Earth without Fire — cold and damp

Little Fire in the chart, birth in winter or in a cold period, a weak Earth Day Master.

  • Chronically low stomach acidity;
  • Intolerance of cold and raw food;
  • Chronic diarrhea or an unstable stool;
  • Anemia (Earth does not "produce" blood properly).

Scenario 3: Earth in excess without Wood

Many Earth signs, no controlling Wood.

  • Abdominal obesity, insulin resistance;
  • Type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome;
  • Gallstones (stagnation of Bile in "waterlogged" Earth);
  • PCOS in women.

6 Annual risks: the years of Wood

Years with a strong Wood sign (甲年, 乙年 — the years of Jia and Yi, or the years of the Tiger 寅, the Rabbit 卯) carry the maximum Wood pressure on Earth. For carriers of an Earth Day Master, this is a time when digestive problems can flare up. Recommended: preventive gastroscopy, a diet with a minimum of raw and cold food, support through warmth.

7 Practice: how to support Earth Qi

Regardless of whether you have a diagnosis, supporting the Earth meridian is a basic health practice for most modern people given their lifestyle (stress, irregular eating, lots of cold drinks):

脾胃者,倉廩之官也 — "The Stomach and Spleen are the officials of the granary." They feed the entire body. When they are healthy, the whole organism is healthy.
