When people first come to BaZi from popular astrology, they often ask: "So what's in store for me this year?" And they expect an answer like "the year of the Dragon — success in your career." In reality, in the canon of the Ziping school and in the modern presentation of Joey Yap, the annual forecast is Liu Nian (流年 (liú nián — "Annual Pillar")), and it is not at all the same thing as the "sign of the year." It is an entire system in which the annual pillar interacts with the eight characters of your chart and with the current pillar of major luck (Da Yun, 大運 (dà yùn — "Luck Pillars")).

流年
Liu Nian · The Current Year
liú nián · "the flowing years"

The character means "flow", and means "year." Together — "the current year", "the annual flow." Each year arrives with its own Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch, and this pair interacts with your entire chart. By understanding the rules of this interaction, you can forecast the themes, the strengths and the dangers of a specific calendar period.

1 What the annual pillar Liu Nian is

The annual pillar is the two characters that denote the current solar year in the Chinese 60-year Jia-Zi cycle (甲子). The first character is the Heavenly Stem (天干), the second is the Earthly Branch (地支). For example, the year 2026 is Bing-Wu (丙午): the stem Bing (Yang Fire) and the branch Wu (Horse, Yin Fire).

This pillar exists in parallel with the four pillars of your birth chart (year, month, day, hour) and the current Da Yun pillar. It turns out that at any moment of life six pillars act upon you: the four natal ones, plus the Da Yun, plus the Liu Nian. And it is precisely the Liu Nian that is the "trigger" that sets off or extinguishes the events embedded in the chart.

It is important to understand: Liu Nian is neither a sentence nor a gift. It is the energetic theme of the year, which will fall differently on different charts. The very same year 2026 Bing-Wu will make a star of one person and lead another to burnout. Everything depends on how the stem and branch of the year interact with your eight characters.

The key idea: the annual pillar is not a separate destiny of its own. It is the "weather" for 365 days that interacts with the "landscape" of your natal chart. The very same rain is a blessing for the desert and a disaster for a valley already flooded.

2 How Liu Nian interacts with the chart and Da Yun

To read Liu Nian correctly, you must work on three levels at once:

  1. The natal chart — the foundation. What was set at birth, which of the Ten Gods stand in which positions, what the Day Master is, what the relationships of the elements are.
  2. Da Yun (大運, the 10-year luck pillar) — the current cycle. This is the "scenery" for 10 years, the theme of the decade.
  3. Liu Nian (流年) — the specific year within that cycle.

First we look at the natal chart: we determine the Day Master, its strength, the favourable elements (Yong Shen, 用神 (yòng shén — "Useful God")). Then we overlay the Da Yun — it strengthens or suppresses certain elements for 10 years. And only then comes the Liu Nian, which sets off the specific events of the year.

An example. Suppose you are a Day Master Jia (甲, Yang Wood), and you need Fire as your Yong Shen (to reveal your talent). The current Da Yun is Bing-Chen (丙辰) — a decade of Fire and Earth. That is already a favourable backdrop. And now 2026 Bing-Wu arrives — even more Fire. A triple overlay of Fire (natal → Da Yun → Liu Nian) gives a year of breakthrough: publicity, recognition, the monetization of talents.

But imagine the reverse. Day Master Bing (丙, Yang Fire), strong, in need of Water. The Da Yun Geng-Shen (庚申, Metal) already creates pressure. And the Liu Nian Bing-Wu 2026 is fire upon fire, without water. Triple dryness — burnout, conflicts, heart problems.

The rule of three layers: first the natal, then the Da Yun, then the Liu Nian. Never read an annual forecast without knowing the natal chart and the current major luck. It is like reading a single page from the middle of a book.

3 The stem of the year versus the branch of the year — different roles

In Liu Nian the stem and the branch play different roles. This is a critically important point that most amateurs miss.

The stem of the year (天干) — external events and visible themes

The Heavenly Stem is responsible for what happens "on the outside", what is visible to those around you. These are career events, public situations, relationships with people, the overt movement of money. The stem of the year directly clashes with the stems of your chart (year, month, day, hour) — and out of these clashes events are born.

If the stem of the year is, say, Bing (丙, Yang Fire), and the day of your chart holds Ren (壬, Yang Water) — this is a Fire-Water clash, a conflict. The theme of the year: external pressure, a testing of one's principles, important public decisions.

The branch of the year (地支) — inner processes and long-term changes

The Earthly Branch is responsible for what happens "deeper": emotional processes, hidden conflicts, changes within the family, health. The branch of the year interacts with the branches of the chart through specific rules: chong (冲, clash), he (合, union), hai (害, harm), xing (刑, punishment).

In 2026 the branch is Wu (午, Horse). If your chart contains the branch Zi (子, Rat) — there will be a Zi-Wu chong, a direct clash. This will set off changes precisely in the sphere of life where Zi stands (year = family, month = career, day = marriage, hour = children).

The stem of the year
External events, career, publicity. Interaction with the stems of the chart through the Ten Gods and the He-stem combinations.
The branch of the year
Inner processes, relationships, health. Chong, he, xing, hai with the branches of the chart — deep tectonic shifts.

4 Which of the Ten Gods are activated each year

The Ten Gods (十神) are the "language" of BaZi. They describe what a specific element is for your Day Master. And it is precisely through the Ten Gods that we translate "Bing-Wu 2026" into the language of real life events.

The principle is simple. We take the stem of the year and determine which of the Ten Gods it is for your Day Master. Then we do the same with the main hidden stem of the branch of the year. And we obtain the "double theme" of the year.

The Ten Gods and their life spheres

Suppose you are a Day Master Ding (丁, Yin Fire). In 2026 Bing-Wu the stem of the year, Bing, is for you Jie Cai (a rival). The main hidden stem of the branch Wu is Ding (yourself), as well as Ji (己, Yin Earth = your Shi Shen, child/creativity) and Yi (乙, Yin Wood = Pian Yin, unconventional support).

The reading for a Ding-DM in 2026: through Jie Cai the year warns of competition and expenses via those close to you; through Shi Shen it promises creative projects and the theme of children; through Pian Yin it gives unexpected knowledge and a meeting with a teacher. Real life weaves these themes into a single storyline.

5 A chong with your birthday — the most dangerous

Chong (冲) is the "clash" of branches, the opposition of six pairs. The most famous: Zi-Wu (子-午), Chou-Wei (丑-未), Yin-Shen (寅-申), Mao-You (卯-酉), Chen-Xu (辰-戌), Si-Hai (巳-亥). When the annual branch clashes with the branch of your day — this is considered one of the strongest events of the year in BaZi.

The day is yourself and your marriage palace. A chong with the day = a shaking of the foundations. This may mean:

Attention: a chong with your birthday is not necessarily a bad thing. It is forced movement. If you have long been stuck — the chong will knock you out of your rut in the needed direction. If everything is wonderful for you — it may destroy what you were building. Read it only in the context of the whole chart.

How to read a chong with the other pillars

6 He combinations with the year — harmonies and transformations

If chong is a clash, then he (合) is a union, a joining together. He combinations in Liu Nian show that the year will bring harmonious mergers: partnerships, unions, marriages, business alliances.

He of the stems (天干合)

Five pairs of Heavenly Stems form unions, each of which transforms both sides into a new element:

If the stem of the year 2026 is Bing, and your chart contains Xin — there will be a Bing-Xin he → Water. The theme of the year through this union: "sincere partnerships that turn the direction of life toward depth." If the he occurs on the day of birth — this is often a year of marriage or a serious partnership.

He of the branches

Liu He (六合 (liù hé — "Six Unions")) — six paired unions of branches: Zi-Chou, Yin-Hai, Mao-Xu, Chen-You, Si-Shen, Wu-Wei. In 2026 the branch Wu enters a he with Wei (未, Goat). If your chart contains Wei — the year brings strengthening, union, warm relationships.

San He (三合 (sān hé — "Triple Unions")) — a three-combination: three branches join together and transform into one strong element. Hai-Mao-Wei → Wood, Yin-Wu-Xu → Fire, Si-You-Chou → Metal, Shen-Zi-Chen → Water. If the missing third branch appears in the year — the chart "activates" a strong theme.

7 Signs of a fortunate year — what to look at

A year is considered favourable if at least several conditions are met:

  1. The stem of the year = your Yong Shen (the useful element). The chief blessing.
  2. The branch of the year contains favourable hidden stems, and they are not blocked by clashes and punishments.
  3. A he with the day or the month creates the needed element. For example, for a Jia-DM the Ding-Ren he gives even more Wood — support.
  4. The Ten Gods of the year activate favourable roles: for a poor chart — Zheng Cai (wealth); for a weak DM — Yin (support), and so on.
  5. There is no chong with the day palace, no triple punishment, no "dangerous triplets".
  6. The year aligns with the theme of the Da Yun, does not contradict it. When the Da Yun and the Liu Nian work "in the same direction" — a breakthrough comes.

The signs of a "star" year: everything you planned earlier comes to fruition quickly; resources arrive on their own; the right people appear; health is in order; there is energy for long-term projects.

A fortunate year does not bring what is not in the chart. It merely provides the ideal conditions to reveal the potential already embedded there.

8 Signs of a difficult year — where to be careful

A year is considered dangerous if:

  1. The stem of the year = your Ji Shen (the harmful element). External pressure, exhaustion.
  2. A chong with the day branch — especially with the branch of the Marriage Palace.
  3. A triple punishment (Zi-Mao, Yin-Si-Shen, Chou-Xu-Wei) is activated by the arrival of the year.
  4. The strengthening of an already strong DM to the point of "obstinacy" — an overestimation of one's strength, conflicts.
  5. Shi Shen meets Qi Sha, or other classic dangerous structures are activated.
  6. The year repeats a Da Yun that is already suppressing you — a double dose of the unfavourable element.

The main warnings

⚠ What to do in a difficult year: do not start major projects, do not sign long-term contracts in the first months, take care of your health, invest in learning and inner work. To "winter" usefully is the best response.

9 Specific spheres — career, love, money, health

There is no universal "annual forecast" — there is a forecast by spheres. Each sphere is read through its own god and its own pillar.

Career

Career is Guan-Sha (官殺, Zheng Guan and Qi Sha). If the stem of the year forces your DM to pass through Guan-Sha — this is a year of career decisions. A strong DM + a good Guan = a promotion. A weak DM + Qi Sha = conflict with superiors, pressure, dismissal.

Love and marriage

Love is read through the day palace and through the partner star. For a man — Cai (財, wealth = the wife). For a woman — Guan (官, officer = the husband). If Cai (for a man) or Guan (for a woman) is activated in the year and there is a he with the day — it is a year of meeting someone or of a wedding. If there is a chong with the day — it is a year of crisis in relationships.

Money

Money is Cai (財). Zheng Cai — stable income, a salary. Pian Cai — unstable, one-off, investments, business. If Cai appears in the year — there is financial activity. But! Cai for a weak DM may mean the opposite — loss; the DM "cannot hold on to" wealth. Here the strength of the DM is crucial.

Health

Health is a separate topic. Each element is responsible for its own organs:

If an element is excessive in the year and attacks a weak organ in the chart — problems are possible. For example, a year of Fire for a DM of Metal puts the lungs at risk.

10 An example: the year 2026 Bing-Wu for different Day Masters

Let us take the year 2026 — Bing-Wu (丙午). The stem Bing is Yang Fire, the branch Wu is Yin Fire. This is the so-called "horse" year, a year of pure fire (天干地支同氣, the stem and the branch of the same element). Fire in 2026 is especially strong.

The hidden stems in Wu: Ding (丁, Yin Fire, the main one), Ji (己, Yin Earth). This means that Fire dominates the year, and there is sub-surface Earth.

For a DM Jia (甲, Yang Wood)

Bing for Jia is Shi Shen (食神, the god of creativity, the child, expression). Wu-Ding is Shang Guan (傷官, the god of rebellion, fame, scandal). A year of creative explosion: public projects, media, performances, the birth of children. The danger — burnout and conflict with superiors through Shang Guan. The strength of Wood is spent into Fire — drink more Water, rest.

For a DM Ren (壬, Yang Water)

Bing for Ren is Pian Cai (偏財, unconventional wealth, business, and for a man — a mistress). Wu-Ding is Zheng Cai (正財, stable wealth, the wife). A double financial year! Major deals and business luck are possible. For a man — a year of romantic events. But if the DM is weak — the Cai attacks, and money can be lost.

For a DM Geng (庚, Yang Metal)

Bing for Geng is Qi Sha (七殺, the heavy officer, pressure). Wu-Ding is Zheng Guan (正官, the officer, authority, and for a woman — the husband). A year of career pressure and trials. For a woman — marriage is possible. For a man — great responsibility, a serious career shift is possible. Fire forges Metal — the health of the lungs is in the danger zone.

For a DM Bing (丙, Yang Fire)

Bing-Wu for Bing is Bi Jian (比肩, your double) and your own element. If the DM is weak — a year of revival, support from friends, the gaining of confidence. If the DM is strong — an excess of Fire, conflicts, burnout, the loss of money through friends. A very polarized year.

For a DM Gui (癸, Yin Water)

Bing for Gui is Zheng Cai. Wu-Ding is Pian Cai. Financial activation, as for Ren. Gui is a delicate dew that may "evaporate" under Fire if the DM is weak. The support of Metal is needed — learning, real estate, the mother.

Universal advice for 2026: a year of strong Fire. For all charts — more Water (rest, learning, travel to the water, philosophical themes). Less forcing, more mindfulness. Fire burns well — but without water it quickly consumes what was built.

This is only a basic framework. An accurate forecast takes into account all eight characters of the chart, the current Da Yun, the chong-he with specific pillars, a run through the 12 months of the year and much more. But even a basic understanding of Liu Nian already gives a huge advantage — you stop drifting through the current blindly.

Remember: Liu Nian is not a prediction in the spirit of "things will be good/bad." It is a navigator. By knowing which themes are activated in the year, you can consciously choose where to direct your efforts, what to avoid, when to push events forward and when to step back. BaZi does not replace your will — it gives it a map of the terrain.
