In the BaZi chart there is a special class of symbols that belong neither to the ten Heavenly Stems, nor to the twelve Earthly Branches, nor to the Ten Gods. These are the "nobleman stars" (神煞, shen sha) — special combinations of positions that add a unique "flavour" to the chart and signal specific events of destiny. And Hong Luan 紅鸞 (hóng luán — "Red Phoenix") is one of the most discussed and most desired stars of this class.
The name itself translates as "Red Luan" — a mythical red bird, kin to the phoenix (feng-huang), which in Chinese culture symbolises romantic love, wedding ceremonies and a happy union. The colour red in traditional China is the colour of weddings, the colour of the bride, the colour of auspicious events. When Hong Luan is active in a person's chart, it is said that "the phoenix has arrived" — and this is always a sign that a special person is appearing, or is about to appear, in your life.
1 What the Hong Luan star is — its essence and history
Hong Luan was first described in detail in the classic 三命通會 ("San Ming Tong Hui," "The Comprehensive Interpretations of the Three Fates") — a treatise of the Ming dynasty that remains one of the principal sources of knowledge about the nobleman stars. There Hong Luan is described as the "star of joy and marital events" (喜慶之星) which, when activated, brings weddings, engagements, the birth of children, and amorous encounters.
In the classical Zi Ping (子平) system, on which the modern BaZi analysis of the Joey Yap school is based, Hong Luan belongs to the category of "minor nobleman stars" — it does not determine a person's entire destiny, as the Day Master or Yong Shen does, but it adds an important shade precisely in the sphere of personal life and emotional events.
Hong Luan works in a pair with its "shadow" sister — Tian Xi 天喜 (tiān xǐ — "Heavenly Joy") ("Heavenly Happiness"), which always stands opposite Hong Luan in the ring of twelve branches. Together these two stars form the so-called "axis of love" of the BaZi chart.
2 How to calculate Hong Luan in your chart
Calculating Hong Luan is simple, but it has its subtleties. The star is determined from the Earthly Branch of the year of birth (Year Branch). That is, you need to look at which animal sign falls on the year of birth, and then use the table to find in which branch of your chart your Hong Luan stands.
The formal formula: Hong Luan = Mao (卯) ± n, where n depends on the year. It is easier to use a ready-made table:
| Year Branch | Animal | Hong Luan falls in | Animal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 子 Zi | Rat | 卯 Mao | Rabbit |
| 丑 Chou | Ox | 寅 Yin | Tiger |
| 寅 Yin | Tiger | 丑 Chou | Ox |
| 卯 Mao | Rabbit | 子 Zi | Rat |
| 辰 Chen | Dragon | 亥 Hai | Pig |
| 巳 Si | Snake | 戌 Xu | Dog |
| 午 Wu | Horse | 酉 You | Rooster |
| 未 Wei | Goat | 申 Shen | Monkey |
| 申 Shen | Monkey | 未 Wei | Goat |
| 酉 You | Rooster | 午 Wu | Horse |
| 戌 Xu | Dog | 巳 Si | Snake |
| 亥 Hai | Pig | 辰 Chen | Dragon |
How to use the table:
- Find your year of birth (by the Chinese lunar calendar — keep in mind that the year begins in February).
- Determine your Year Branch (for example, 1990 is the Horse, 午).
- Look in the right-hand part of the table to see which branch is your Hong Luan (for the Horse it is the Rooster, 酉).
- Now check whether this branch appears in your chart — in any of the four pillars (Year, Month, Day, Hour).
If the Hong Luan branch is present in your chart, the star is active for you. If it is not in your natal chart but appears in a Da Yun pillar (a major luck cycle) or in the annual pillar (Liu Nian), the star "flies in" precisely during that period of life.
3 Hong Luan in the different pillars of the chart
The BaZi chart consists of four pillars — Year, Month, Day, Hour. Each pillar governs a particular sphere and a period of age. Depending on where Hong Luan stands, its manifestations differ substantially.
Hong Luan in the Year Pillar
Hong Luan in the Year pillar tells us that the romantic theme is present in the family history. Often the parents of such people had a vivid love story — for example, they married for great love, overcoming obstacles, or they divorced amid passions. This emotional "programme" is passed down the line of ancestors.
A person with Hong Luan in the Year usually takes an interest in relationships early, has early romances (often in school), and romance becomes an important part of their identity. This is a "child of love," a person for whom relationships are not a side theme of life but its very axis.
Hong Luan in the Month Pillar
The Month pillar is the pillar of career, surroundings, and social circle. Hong Luan here means that love often arrives through work and social ties. Such people fall in love with colleagues, bosses, project partners, people from their professional circle.
It may also mean that the person's profession itself is connected with the theme of love, beauty, emotion — psychology, art, fashion, the wedding industry, literature, cinema.
Hong Luan in the Day Pillar (beneath the Day Master)
This is the strongest position for Hong Luan. The Day is the pillar of the person themselves and their spouse. When Hong Luan stands directly beneath the Day Master (in the Day Branch), it means that the marital relationship is the central theme of this person's destiny.
What this means in practice:
- The person usually marries early or has early serious relationships.
- Outwardly such people are often attractive (especially if Tao Hua — the "Peach Blossom" — is also present nearby).
- The spouse is often beautiful, charismatic, conspicuous in society.
- Romantic events (a wedding, an engagement, parenthood) become the key turning points of life.
Hong Luan in the Hour Pillar
The Hour pillar governs the late stage of life (after 50) and children. Hong Luan here often means a "late marriage" or a second marriage that turns out to be happy. This position is also favourable for the birth of children in mature years.
Many well-known people who married again in their mature years and found true love there had Hong Luan in the Hour pillar.
4 The bright side — what Hong Luan gives its bearer
In its positive manifestation, Hong Luan is one of the happiest gifts of destiny. What exactly does it bring?
An aesthetic sense is another strong side of Hong Luan. Bearers of this star often have refined taste, love beautiful things, and value art. Many fashion designers, painters, musicians, and poets have Hong Luan in their chart — it gives an emotional "channel" through which beauty enters the world.
A capacity for reconciliation — Hong Luan carries the energy of unification, harmony, and the mending of what is torn. Classical literature says that "where Hong Luan appears, conflicts melt like ice under the spring sun." Bearers of this star often become peacemakers within families, mediators between conflicting parties.
Sexual attractiveness — Hong Luan adds to Tao Hua (the Peach Blossom star, responsible for purely carnal attraction) a deeper, more romantic level of magnetism. It is not merely "sex appeal," it is an "aura of love" that people sense and are drawn toward.
5 The dark side — dangers and traps
Every nobleman star has a "dark mirror," and Hong Luan is no exception. In a negative configuration it becomes a source of serious problems.
Love triangles and infidelity
If Hong Luan in the chart combines with Tao Hua in several pillars at once, plus conflicting branches are present, the bearer often finds themselves in situations of love triangles. The partner is unfaithful, or the bearer themselves cannot be faithful. This shows up especially strongly in men with Hong Luan + abundant Earth (wealth in a man's chart).
Emotional dependence
Bearers of Hong Luan can fall into the trap of codependent relationships. Love becomes a drug; without a partner life seems empty. This leads to toxic unions that are hard to leave.
Marriage as a "sacrifice"
Sometimes Hong Luan activates in such a way that a person marries not out of love but out of "social necessity" — because "the time has come," because "parents are waiting." Such marriages happen in years when Hong Luan is activated, but often turn out unhappy.
Divorce and loss
Paradoxically, Hong Luan governs not only the contracting but also the dissolution of marriage. If an unfavourable Hong Luan is activated in Da Yun (for example, combined with a branch conflict, Chong, 沖) — this may be a period of divorce or the loss of a partner.
Excessive sentimentality
Bearers of a strong Hong Luan may suffer from excessive emotionality in matters that demand a cool head. In business they make decisions "with the heart," in politics "out of friendship," in their career "out of love for colleagues." This often leads to financial and reputational losses.
6 Combinations of Hong Luan with other stars
Hong Luan rarely works alone. Its influence depends greatly on which other stars and combinations are present in the chart.
Hong Luan + Tao Hua (桃花 (táo huā — "Peach Blossom"))
The most powerful and dangerous combination. Tao Hua is the "Peach Blossom", the star of carnal attraction and romantic adventures. When both stars stand side by side, the bearer gains incredible charisma, but also a tendency toward multiple romances. Marriage is possible, but infidelity is a serious risk.
Hong Luan + Tian Xi (天喜)
Tian Xi is Hong Luan's sister star, "Heavenly Happiness." When both are active at once (for example, one in the Day, the other in the Hour) — this is the strongest sign of a happy marriage and a large family. A classic combination for people whose lives literally revolve around the family.
Hong Luan + Tian Yi Gui Ren (天乙貴人 (tiān yǐ guì rén — "Heavenly Nobleman"))
Tian Yi is the principal nobleman star, "Heavenly Virtue." Its combination with Hong Luan means that the marriage partner is a patron and mentor, a person who raises the bearer to a new level of life. Often such unions are a "marriage of ascent": the partner brings social status, resources, and new opportunities.
Hong Luan + Jie Sha (劫煞) or Wang Shen (亡神)
A dangerous combination. Jie Sha is the star of "destructive force," Wang Shen the "star of death/loss." Combined with Hong Luan they produce dramatic, tragic love stories — break-ups, separations, illness of a partner, sometimes widowhood at a young age.
Hong Luan + Hua Gai (華蓋 (huá gài — "Canopy Star"))
Hua Gai is the "star of the hermit," predisposing toward solitude and spiritual seeking. Combined with Hong Luan it creates an interesting paradox: the person dreams of love, yet at the same time is drawn to seclusion. Often such people marry late, after a long period of spiritual searching or creative solitude.
7 The activation of Hong Luan in Da Yun
The most practical significance of Hong Luan is its activation in the pillars of Great Luck (Da Yun, 大運 (dà yùn — "Luck Pillars")). Every 10 years the Da Yun pillar changes, bringing new energy into the chart. When the Hong Luan branch arrives in Da Yun or Liu Nian (the annual pillar) — the star "ignites."
What can happen in the year Hong Luan is activated:
- Meeting a future spouse — especially if Hong Luan was not active before.
- A wedding or engagement — for those already in a relationship.
- The birth of a child — Hong Luan governs "joyous events."
- Falling in love, a strong feeling — even if the person is already married, passion may flare up.
- The return of a past love — Hong Luan sometimes "resurrects" old stories.
- Divorce — if the configuration is unfavourable, the activation of Hong Luan may mean a final parting.
How to gauge the strength of the activation
To understand how powerfully Hong Luan will fire in a given year, masters of the Joey Yap school advise taking several factors into account:
- A match with the natal Hong Luan — if a branch arrives in the year that already stands in your chart as Hong Luan, the activation will be very powerful.
- The condition of the Yong Shen — if that same branch is your favourable element, the events will be positive.
- The presence of Chong (沖, conflict) — if the Hong Luan branch clashes with the Day Master's branch, the events may be dramatic.
- The presence of other "joyous" stars — Tian Xi and Tian Yi strengthen the favourable effect.

Bearers of a strong Hong Luan often fulfil themselves in fields where the central theme is love, emotion, beauty, celebration. This star does not make a person a "businessman" or a "scientist," but it opens specific paths.
The wedding industry
Wedding planners, photographers, florists, dress designers, masters of ceremonies — all of these professions "feed" on the energy of Hong Luan. Bearers of the star often feel like fish in water in this field.
Relationship psychology
Family therapists, relationship coaches, sexology experts, tantra practitioners. Hong Luan gives an intuitive understanding of human feelings and the ability to help others in their love affairs.
Art and entertainment
Actors (especially in romantic roles), singers, poets, novelists, directors of melodramas. Hong Luan is a "channel" through which feeling turns into art.
Fashion and beauty
Fashion designers, stylists, make-up artists, nail technicians, cosmetologists, beauty salon owners. Hong Luan shows up especially brightly in those who work with brides and celebratory occasions.
Hospitality and the event industry
Event organisers, owners of restaurants and bars with a romantic atmosphere, hoteliers, the spa industry. Hong Luan helps create "mood" — and that is the foundation of this business.
Literature and media
Authors of romance novels, journalists at "glossy" magazines, scriptwriters for TV series, influencer bloggers in relationship and lifestyle topics. Hong Luan gives the ability to write so that the reader "falls in love with the text."
9 Famous bearers (abstract patterns)
Although, without a full date, time and place of birth, we cannot claim that a specific celebrity has an active Hong Luan, we can describe the patterns under which this star is likely.
Great lovers and famous love stories. When a person is known above all as a "legendary lover" — for example, historical figures whose love stories became the subjects of literature and cinema — they often have an active Hong Luan in the Day or Hour. These are people whose destiny is literally written through the prism of a great love.
"Serial husbands and wives" — those who marry many times, always with great passion. Hong Luan combined with Tao Hua in several branches is a frequent pattern for such figures.
Romantic directors and screenwriters. Authors whose films and books are benchmarks of the romantic genre often have Hong Luan active in the Month or Day pillar. The star works not only as "personal love," but also as a "channel for transmitting romantic energy to others."
Icons of style and beauty. Those remembered above all as the "benchmark of beauty" of their era — golden-age film stars, fashion icons — usually have a strong Hong Luan together with Tao Hua in the Day Branch.
Parents of large families. Personalities known for a large, happy family with many children often have Hong Luan + Tian Xi in the Hour pillar.
10 Practical application — what to do with this information
Knowledge of Hong Luan is not "entertainment astrology." It is a tool that can be used for important life decisions.
If Hong Luan is active in your natal chart
- Accept that love is your central theme. Do not try to live "like everyone else," ignoring this sphere. Your resource lies in relationships, and by blocking them you block your own growth.
- Develop your emotional intelligence. Reading books on relationship psychology, therapy, conscious practice of communication — these are your professional skills, even if you do not work in this field.
- Choose a partner carefully. Bearers of Hong Luan often "stick" to the first person they meet, because feeling floods the mind. Give yourself time.
- Use the talent in your work. If your profession is not connected with emotion and beauty, consider whether you can add this component (becoming the "human face" of a company, developing a personal brand).
If Hong Luan is activated in Da Yun
- Be open to new acquaintances. Do not refuse dates, events, travel. This is a window of opportunity.
- If you are married — deepen the relationship. The activation of Hong Luan within marriage is a chance for a "second honeymoon." Use it.
- Be careful with impulsiveness. Under the influence of Hong Luan it is easy to make rash decisions — a sudden wedding, a divorce. Give your feelings time to be tested.
- If there is Chong (conflict) — be vigilant. The combination of Hong Luan with a conflicting branch can bring a rupture. Work on the relationship pre-emptively.
If you have no Hong Luan in your natal chart
This does not mean you will have no love. It means that:
- Love arrives not as the "central theme of life," but through other doors — career, the spiritual path, friendship.
- Romantic events are less vivid for you, but they may be more stable.
- When Hong Luan is activated in Da Yun (and this will happen several times over a lifetime) — the events will be especially noticeable.
Hong Luan and compatibility
When you analyse the compatibility of two charts, pay attention to the following:
- If one partner's Hong Luan stands in the branch that is the other's Day Branch — this is the strongest sign of a fateful meeting.
- If the Hong Luan of both partners forms a "half-combination" (for example, Shen and Zi) — the union is favourable.
- If one's Hong Luan conflicts with the other's Day Branch — the relationship will be passionate, but unstable.
