There Hong Luan is described as the "star of joy and marital events" (喜慶之星) which, when activated, brings weddings, engagements, the birth of children, and amorous encounters.

In the classical Zi Ping (子平) system, on which the modern BaZi analysis of the Joey Yap school is based, Hong Luan belongs to the category of "minor nobleman stars" — it does not determine a person's entire destiny, as the Day Master or Yong Shen does, but it adds an important shade precisely in the sphere of personal life and emotional events.

Hong Luan works in a pair with its "shadow" sister — Tian Xi 天喜 (tiān xǐ — "Heavenly Joy") ("Heavenly Happiness"), which always stands opposite Hong Luan in the ring of twelve branches. Together these two stars form the so-called "axis of love" of the BaZi chart.

2 How to calculate Hong Luan in your chart

Calculating Hong Luan is simple, but it has its subtleties. The star is determined from the Earthly Branch of the year of birth (Year Branch). That is, you need to look at which animal sign falls on the year of birth, and then use the table to find in which branch of your chart your Hong Luan stands.

The formal formula: Hong Luan = Mao (卯) ± n, where n depends on the year. It is easier to use a ready-made table:

How to use the table:

1. Find your year of birth (by the Chinese lunar calendar — keep in mind that the year begins in February).
2. Determine your Year Branch (for example, 1990 is the Horse, 午).
3. Look in the right-hand part of the table to see which branch is your Hong Luan (for the Horse it is the Rooster, 酉).
4. Now check whether this branch appears in your chart — in any of the four pillars (Year, Month, Day, Hour).

If the Hong Luan branch is present in your chart, the star is active for you. If it is not in your natal chart but appears in a Da Yun pillar (a major luck cycle) or in the annual pillar (Liu Nian), the star "flies in" precisely during that period of life.

3 Hong Luan in the different pillars of the chart

The BaZi chart consists of four pillars — Year, Month, Day, Hour. Each pillar governs a particular sphere and a period of age. Depending on where Hong Luan stands, its manifestations differ substantially.

Hong Luan in the Year Pillar

Hong Luan in the Year pillar tells us that the romantic theme is present in the family history. Hong Luan in the Month Pillar

Hong Luan in the Hour Pillar

4 The bright side — what Hong Luan gives its bearer

6 Combinations of Hong Luan with other stars

Hong Luan rarely works alone. Its influence depends greatly on which other stars and combinations are present in the chart.

Hong Luan + Tao Hua (桃花 (táo huā — "Peach Blossom"))

The most powerful and dangerous combination. Tao Hua is the "Peach Blossom", the star of carnal attraction and romantic adventures. Hong Luan + Tian Xi (天喜)

Although, without a full date, time and place of birth, we cannot claim that a specific celebrity has an active Hong Luan, we can describe the patterns under which this star is likely.
