If 七殺 (Seven Killings) is the warlord on the battlefield, then 正官 (Zheng Guan) is the chief judge in the courtroom. Both exert control — but in completely different ways. 正官 acts within the framework of law, tradition, and the social contract. It does not break systems — it embodies and protects them. In the classical texts, 正官 is called 貴人 (gui ren) — "the noble person," because it is precisely this star that governs reputation, social status, and the ability to hold high office.

正官
Zheng Guan · Direct Officer
zhèng guān · Direct Officer · Proper Control

The word "Direct" is key here. In the system of the Ten Gods, "direct" (正) always means same-named, predictable, working by the rules. As opposed to "indirect" (偏) — oblique, unpredictable, breaking the norms. 正官 controls your Day Master — but it is of your own "camp," and its control is perceived as fair.

1 The mechanics: how 正官 is calculated

正官 is the element that "controls" (克) your Day Master, while having the opposite polarity (Yin controls Yang, or Yang controls Yin).

Day Master正官七殺 (for comparison)
甲 Jia (Yang Wood)辛 Xin (Yin Metal)庚 Geng (Yang Metal)
乙 Yi (Yin Wood)庚 Geng (Yang Metal)辛 Xin (Yin Metal)
丙 Bing (Yang Fire)癸 Gui (Yin Water)壬 Ren (Yang Water)
丁 Ding (Yin Fire)壬 Ren (Yang Water)癸 Gui (Yin Water)
戊 Wu (Yang Earth)乙 Yi (Yin Wood)甲 Jia (Yang Wood)
己 Ji (Yin Earth)甲 Jia (Yang Wood)乙 Yi (Yin Wood)
庚 Geng (Yang Metal)丁 Ding (Yin Fire)丙 Bing (Yang Fire)
辛 Xin (Yin Metal)丙 Bing (Yang Fire)丁 Ding (Yin Fire)
壬 Ren (Yang Water)己 Ji (Yin Earth)戊 Wu (Yang Earth)
癸 Gui (Yin Water)戊 Wu (Yang Earth)己 Ji (Yin Earth)

2 正官 vs 七殺: what is the difference

⚖️
正官 Direct Officer
Control within the law. Fair, predictable, respected. Works through the system, not against it. Reputation, office, status.
⚔️
七殺 Seven Killings
Control through pressure and conflict. Unpredictable, intense. Breaks systems. Requires taming — otherwise it destroys the bearer.
📌 The golden rule: In a chart it is better to have a single 正官 than several. Multiple 正官 create "competition among officials" — reputation suffers, and people appear who hinder your career. One clean 正官 = a clear position and authority.

3 The 正官 archetype: who these people are

Bearers of a strong, clean 正官 are the people we call "reliable." You can count on them. They keep their promises, respect hierarchy, and build their reputation over years. This does not mean they are dull — it simply means their word carries weight.

4 正官 in career

正官 is the "star of promotion." Periods when your decade or year carries the sign of 正官 are a time of career growth, gaining positions, and recognition from superiors. If 正官 in your chart is strong and clean (not attacked, not tied up in a combination), such periods bring a genuine career leap.

The best career combination: 正官 + 正印 (Direct Resource). The Officer + the Sage = a statesman, a judge, an academic leader. In the classics this is called 官印相生 — "the Officer and the Resource support each other." These are the charts of people to whom the state or society entrusts the highest posts.

5 正官 and relationships

For women: the husband through 正官

In the traditional BaZi system, for a woman 正官 is the star of the lawful husband. Official relationships, registering a marriage, the public recognition of a partnership — all of this is through 正官. If a woman has a strong, untouched 正官, she generally builds official, stable relationships. The partner is a serious, responsible, socially established person.

If 正官 is attacked or weakened, relationships may be unstable, the husband unreliable or socially unsettled. Too many signs of 正官 and 七殺 together = competition among "husbands" (frequent changes of partner or parallel relationships).

For men: reputation and social standing

For a man, 正官 is his reputation in society, his social status. A strong 正官 = he is respected and entrusted with leadership roles. A weak 正官 = difficulties with recognition, problems with superiors or the authorities.

6 When 正官 is weak or attacked

Weakness of 正官 in the chart, or its being attacked in the annual pillars, manifests as:

⚠️ 官杀混杂 (混 Hun — mixing): When both 正官 and 七殺 are present in the chart at once — this is called "the mixing of officials." The classics consider it a difficult configuration: two masters, both of whom must be pleased. The solution is 合杀留官 (neutralize the 七殺, keep the 正官) through the correct Yong Shen.

7 正官 and health

正官, as the principle of control in health, is linked to the organs and functions that "govern" the body: the nervous system, the spine, immunity (recognizing "self" from "other"). A weakened 正官 in the chart may point to reduced immunity, spinal problems, and disorders of nervous regulation.

8 Activation in Da Yun: a time of career growth

A 正官 decade — if your Yong Shen favors it — is one of the best career periods in your life. Recognition, promotions, new positions of responsibility. Especially if 正官 in your natal chart is clean and strong.

If 正官 is not your Yong Shen (for example, for a weak Day Master that needs support rather than control), such a decade can be oppressive: responsibility grows while the resource falls short.

正官为君子之星 — "正官 is the star of the noble person." Those in whose chart it is strong and clean bring order, justice, and dignity into the world.
