The Goat (in some translations, the Sheep) is one of the gentlest and most underrated signs of the Chinese cycle. In pop astrology it is portrayed as modest, artistic, and a little indecisive. But real BaZi sees in the Goat something far more interesting: 未 (wèi — Goat) is not just an "earthly" sign, but the secret storage of Wood, the storehouse of ending summer. Let's start with the technical essence.
1 What the Year of the Goat 未 means
"I was born in the year of the Goat" means that the annual earthly branch of the chart is 未 (wèi — Goat). This is the eighth of the twelve branches. Unlike the cardinal signs (Horse, Rat), the Goat belongs to the storehouse branches (墓库 (mù kù — "grave-storage")) — the four "earthly" corners of the cycle, which close each season and store its residual energy.
In classical BaZi, the year branch belongs to the pillar of ancestors and lineage — it describes the energy of your family and the first 16 years of life. If your year branch is the Goat, your lineage carries an "earthly, soft" imprint: caring, artistic, valuing comfort, roots, and traditions.
But this is only the backdrop. The personality itself is revealed through the day of birth, where the Day Master — "you yourself" — resides. Two people of the "year of the Goat" can be completely different if their Day Masters differ.
2 The Hidden Stems 藏干 of the Goat
The main depth of any branch lies in its hidden stems (藏干 (cáng gān — "hidden heavenly stems")). The Goat 未 is especially rich: inside it hide as many as three stems, which is what makes it a "storehouse."
- 己 (jǐ — Yin Earth) — the main, dominant stem. This is "garden earth": soft, fertile, nourishing. It sets the Goat's core character — caring and grounded.
- 丁 (dīng — Yin Fire) — the residual Fire of departing summer. "Candle" warmth within the Earth. It lends the Goat inner warmth, artistry, and emotionality.
- 乙 (yǐ — Yin Wood) — the most interesting one. This is the storage of Wood: 未 is the "storehouse" into which spring Wood is "shut away." That is precisely why the Goat is secretly connected to creativity, growth, and flexibility.
The triple filling 己 + 丁 + 乙 (Earth + Fire + Wood) explains the Goat's complexity: outwardly — soft earth, but inside flickers the fire of feeling and a green sprout of creativity lies hidden. This is a sign with a rich "inner world."
Why do hidden stems matter so much at all? Because it is precisely through them that the branch "communicates" with the rest of the chart. When a heavenly stem kindred to the hidden one appears in the chart, "rooting" occurs (通根, tōng gēn — "to root into the branch"). For example, if a person has the stem 乙 (yǐ — Wood) on top, and the Goat 未 stands among the branches, then this Wood gains a hidden "root" in the storehouse and is considered stronger than it appears. Without analyzing the hidden stems, it is impossible to correctly assess the strength of the Day Master — and that is the first step in reading any chart.
Because of its three stems, the Goat is one of the most "multilayered" branches of the cycle. Folk astrology sees only the name of the animal, whereas real BaZi reads the formula 己 + 丁 + 乙 and which of these stems is "activated" by interactions with the other seven characters of the chart.
3 Character: Only the Year Layer
Let's repeat the caveat: below is not a portrait of the personality, but the influence of precisely the year branch of the Goat. Personality is read from the Day Master. But as a background layer, the Goat adds recognizable traits.
What the year branch 未 brings
- Gentleness. The Earth 己 (jǐ) gives compliance, tact, an unwillingness to conflict. The Goat "flows around" sharp corners.
- Creativity. The hidden Wood 乙 (yǐ) and Fire 丁 (dīng) within nourish an artistic streak: aesthetics, music, design, handicraft, cooking.
- Caring. "Garden earth" nourishes everything around it. The Goat in the year often gives a desire to protect, feed, create comfort for loved ones.
- Sensitivity. The residual Fire makes the Goat emotionally subtle, receptive to moods, sometimes easily hurt.
- Artistry. The Goat gravitates toward the beauty of form and toward self-expression through images, rather than through direct speech.
The flip side of these qualities is indecisiveness, dependence on the opinions of loved ones, a tendency toward passivity and anxiety. But how much these traits manifest is decided by the full chart, not by a single year branch.
4 The Element and Season of the Goat
The Goat 未 is the end of summer, the last, sixth summer month, corresponding to roughly July in the solar calendar (from ~July 7 to ~August 7). By element it is yin Earth, but "warm and dry," still holding the heat of departed summer.
| Parameter | Value for the Goat 未 |
|---|---|
| Branch | 未 (wèi — Goat), 8th of 12 |
| Element | Earth 🏔️ (warm, dry) |
| Polarity | Yin |
| Season | End of summer (~July) |
| Time of day | 13:00–15:00 (early afternoon) |
| Hidden stems | 己 (jǐ — Earth), 丁 (dīng — Fire), 乙 (yǐ — Wood) |
| Storage | of Wood 木 (mù) |
| Direction | Southwest |
Since the Goat is "warm, dry Earth," it is by nature the opposite of the "cold, moist Earth" of the Ox 丑. This is important: the dry Earth of the Goat readily "absorbs" excess water and contains it, but can "scorch" delicate Wood. In charts where warm, stabilizing Earth is needed, the Goat in the year is a valuable resource. But where it is already dry and hot, the Goat can intensify the "scorchedness" of the chart.
In the system of the five elements (五行, wǔ xíng — "five movements"), Earth is connected to specific spheres of life and the body. In the body it is the spleen, stomach, digestion, the muscles; in terms of energy character, Earth is responsible for stability, nourishment, trust, the connection to home and roots. The warm Earth of the Goat is especially "nourishing" — it supports Metal well (by the generating cycle, Earth gives birth to Metal) and contains Water. When the Earth of the Goat is in balance, a person is reliable, caring, rooted; when in excess, stubbornness, inertia, a tendency toward stagnation and hoarding the superfluous appear.
The seasonal dimension decides much here. A person born in winter with the Goat in the year receives a rare "warm dry earth" in a cold, moist chart — for them the Goat often becomes a saving, warming element. And a person born in summer, already with an excess of Fire and dry Earth, with the Goat in the year risks getting a "scorched" chart that acutely lacks Water. One year sign — two opposite conclusions, and this again proves: the Goat cannot be read in isolation from the month of birth.

Build the Full Chart →5 Compatibility: the 三合 Union and the 沖 Clash
Real compatibility in BaZi is calculated from both charts of a couple, not from "year signs." But at the level of earthly branches, the Goat has fundamental interactions that a master checks first.
The Triple Union 三合: Pig-Rabbit-Goat → Wood
三合 (sān hé — "triple union") is a combination of three branches that merge into a single element. The Goat is the "storehouse" of the Wood triple union:
The Pig 亥 (hài — Water) "gives birth to" Wood, the Rabbit 卯 (mǎo — Wood) is its peak, the Goat 未 (wèi) is its "storehouse." Together they form a complete cycle of Wood. It is here that the secret 乙 (yǐ — Wood) inside the Goat is revealed. People who have members of this trio in their charts find common ground easily — a "green," growing synergy, a shared gentleness, and a creative kinship arise between them.
The 午未合 Union with the Horse
Separately, the Goat has a paired union 六合 (liù hé — "six unions") with the Horse: 午未合 (wǔ wèi hé). The Goat 未 and the Horse 午 (wǔ — Fire) "bond." This pair does not transform into a new element, but gives stability and warmth. The Fire of the Horse warms the Earth of the Goat — one of the gentlest and most comfortable unions of the cycle. The Horse and the Goat stand side by side, like noon and the early evening of summer.
The 丑未冲 Clash with the Ox
The Goat's main antagonist is the Ox. 沖 (chōng — "clash") 丑未冲 (chǒu wèi chōng) is a confrontation of two Earths:
- 丑 (chǒu — Ox) — cold, moist Earth, the storehouse of winter Water and Metal.
- 未 (wèi — Goat) — warm, dry Earth, the storehouse of summer Wood and Fire.
This is a "clash of storehouses": winter against summer, moisture against dryness. The peculiarity is that a clash between two storages "cracks open" both storehouses — the hidden Wood of the Goat and the Metal of the Ox are released. A clash is not a sentence, but an energy of change. Sometimes it is conflicts and upheavals, sometimes a necessary "breaking open" of stagnant resources. It is all decided by the context of the full chart.
6 Years of the Goat's Birth
The year of the Goat comes every 12 years. Remember: the "Goat" combines with five different heavenly stems, giving five versions (the Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water Goat). Below are the Goat years of the nearest decades by the solar calendar (the year begins around February 4, not January 1!).
| Year | Stem-branch pair | Type of Goat |
|---|---|---|
| 1979 | 己未 (Jǐ-Wèi) | Earth Goat |
| 1991 | 辛未 (Xīn-Wèi) | Metal Goat |
| 2003 | 癸未 (Guǐ-Wèi) | Water Goat |
| 2015 | 乙未 (Yǐ-Wèi) | Wood Goat |
| 2027 | 丁未 (Dīng-Wèi) | Fire Goat |
Note: 2027 is the Fire Goat 丁未 (Dīng-Wèi), where the yin Fire of the stem 丁 (dīng — candle) meets the warm Earth of the branch 未, inside which 丁 is also hidden. This is "double Fire over Earth" — a warm, creative, emotionally rich year. The previous Fire Goat was in 1967.
7 Strengths and Weaknesses
At the level of the year layer, the Goat gives a characteristic set of strengths and vulnerabilities. Let's stress: these are tendencies of the branch, not a diagnosis of the personality.
The hidden Wood 乙 (yǐ) inside the Goat is its potential for growth and independence. When a person learns to "release" this inner sprout, gentleness turns into creative strength rather than weakness of will. Which pole prevails is decided by the full chart and the luck pillars.
8 Career and Money
The earthly, creative nature of the Goat gravitates toward fields where there is beauty, care, and working with people. At the level of the year layer, this gives an inclination toward:
- Creative professions: design, art, music, fashion, photography, decor, cooking.
- Caring fields: care work, medicine, psychology, education, charity, HR.
- "Earthly" and aesthetic industries: real estate, hospitality, antiques, landscaping, retail of cozy goods.
The Goat's relationship with money is "accumulative and cautious": it values stability and comfort, dislikes taking risks. But its gentleness can get in the way of defending its worth and asking for fair pay. The Goat's main skill is to learn to value its work and not yield in negotiations. However, where exactly wealth is located in the chart (the Wealth star 財 (cái — "wealth, prosperity")) and how it is activated is visible only in a full reading, not by the year sign.
And again, it all depends on the Day Master. For a Day Master of the Water element, the Earth of the Goat is "pressure and authority" (官殺, guān shā — "officer and seven killings"), that is, career, status, discipline. For a Day Master of the Wood element, the Earth of the Goat is already "wealth" (財), money and resources. And for a Day Master of the Fire element, the Goat is the "output of talent" (食傷, shí shāng — "eating god and hurting officer"), creativity and self-expression. The same "year of the Goat" means three completely different money scenarios. This is why a universal "financial forecast for the Goat" is meaningless — your personal chart is needed.
9 Love and Relationships
In love, the year layer of the Goat manifests as tenderness, devotion, and a need for emotional security. This is a caring, romantic partner who invests in comfort and atmosphere. The Goat needs someone who values its gentleness, gives a sense of support, and does not press with force — otherwise the sensitive Goat "closes up."
At the level of branches, the Goat's best romantic resonances are:
- Horse 午 (wǔ) — the union 午未合, the warmest and most supportive, Fire warms the Earth.
- Pig 亥 (hài) and Rabbit 卯 (mǎo) — partners in the Wood triple union, shared gentleness and creative kinship.
The hardest is with the Ox 丑 (chǒu) because of the clash 丑未冲. But to repeat: real compatibility is calculated from the spouse palace, the Day Masters of both, and the useful elements, not from signs. Many strong couples are built precisely on the clash dynamic — it "cracks open" the hidden resources of both.
10 Why You Need the Full Chart
We have examined everything the year branch of the Goat carries: three hidden stems, the storage of Wood, element, unions, clashes, character tendencies. But this is only 1/8 of your chart. To understand yourself, all eight characters are needed.
Only in the full chart is it visible: whether the Earth of the Goat strengthens your luck or "parches" you; whether the hidden Wood will reveal itself as a talent or as a vulnerability; in which pillar wealth is hidden; who really suits you. The "year of the Goat" answers only the question "where you came from" — and all the rest of destiny is written in the seven other characters.
