⚠ An important caveat right from the start. The "Year of the Ox" is merely the year branch — one of the eight characters of your BaZi chart (1/8, about 12.5% of the information). Your personality is defined above all by the Day Master (日主 (rì zhǔ — "master of the day")) — the heavenly stem of your birth day, not the year sign. Before you read the description below, learn why the year sign decides almost nothing: "The Truth About the Chinese Zodiac" →

"The Year of the Ox is a year of toil and stability," people write at New Year. 🐂 The Ox is indeed one of the most respected signs: a symbol of perseverance, reliability and honest labor. But what lies behind it in genuine BaZi? In the system of earthly branches the Ox is 丑 (chǒu — Ox), the second branch, and behind its calm image hides one of the most complex and "loaded" branches of the whole cycle. Let's unpack it for real.

Chǒu · Ox
chǒu · Yin Earth · late winter · storehouse of Metal

1 What the Year of the Ox 丑 means: branch, element, polarity 🐂

丑 (chǒu — Ox) is the second of the twelve earthly branches (地支 (dì zhī — "earthly branches")), following immediately after the Rat. By element 丑 belongs to Earth (土 (tǔ — "earth")), and by polarity it is Yin.

But this is a special kind of Earth. The Ox is "cold and damp Earth" (濕土 (shī tǔ — "damp earth")): frozen winter soil, clay at the end of winter, still holding moisture and ice within. This is not the dry, fertile tilled field of summer but heavy, dense, cooled earth. Hence the image of the Ox: slow, solid, enduring, able to bear weight.

A key feature of 丑 is that it is one of the four "earth storehouses" (墓庫 (mù kù — "grave-storehouse")). Specifically, the Ox is the storehouse of Metal: within it, as in a safe, metal energy is locked away. More on this in the next section.

2 The hidden stems 藏干 of the Ox branch

Each earthly branch conceals within itself hidden stems (藏干 (cáng gān — "hidden stems")). While the Rat held just one stem, the Ox is one of the most "populated" branches: three whole stems are hidden within it. This is why the Ox is so deep and complex.

己 癸 辛
Jǐ · Guǐ · Xīn
the three hidden stems of the Ox
🏦The key to understanding: the Ox holds Earth (己), Water (癸) and Metal (辛) simultaneously. This makes it the "safe" of a chart. If a chart contains the Ox and a year or pillar arrives that "opens" the storehouse, the hidden Metal 辛 is released — and this can mean the unlocking of resources, assets, hidden talents or, conversely, losses. More on this mechanic in the material on storehouses.

3 The character of those born in the Year of the Ox (but this is only the year layer!)

The classical description of the "Year of the Ox" rests on the nature of cold, dense, enduring Earth. Here are the qualities tradition associates with the Ox:

Among the Ox's shadow manifestations, tradition names stubbornness, conservatism, slowness to change, hidden emotionality (that very water 癸 inside) and a tendency to keep grievances bottled up.

But be careful! This is the elemental archetype of the branch, not a portrait of a specific person. The Ox of 1985 (Wood Ox 乙丑) and the Ox of 2021 (Metal Ox 辛丑) are different characters, because the upper stem of the year differs and, above all, because each person has their own Day Master.

4 The elemental nature and season of the Ox ❄️🌱

丑 (chǒu — Ox) rules late winter — roughly from January 6 to February 3, the last month of the cold season before the start of spring. This is a borderline time: winter still holds the earth in cold, but beneath the frozen soil the first warmth of the coming spring is already ripening.

So the Ox is the branch of transition and accumulation. The Ox's Earth holds within it the remnants of water (癸) and the seed of future metal (辛). It is a "warehouse" that sums up winter and prepares the ground for the spring Wood.

The practical meaning for a chart: the Ox is powerful but cold earth. For a Day Master of 丙 (bǐng — Yang Fire) or 丁 (dīng — Yin Fire) that needs warmth, the damp cold Ox can "smother" the fire. But for a Day Master of 庚 (gēng — Yang Metal) or 辛 (xīn — Yin Metal), the Ox is its native storehouse and support, a source of strength.

The Ox is the safe of late winter. Frozen clay on the outside, silver hidden within.

5 Ox compatibility: harmonies 三合, 六合 and the clash 沖

In genuine BaZi, compatibility is the interaction of earthly branches, not "sign with sign." For the Ox there are three key interactions.

Three harmony 三合: 巳酉丑 → Metal

The Ox's 三合 (sān hé — "Three Harmony") is the combination 巳酉丑: 巳 (sì — Snake), 酉 (yǒu — Rooster) and 丑 (chǒu — Ox). Together the three form a powerful metal frame (金局 (jīn jú — "metal bureau / frame")), in which the Ox plays the role of the storehouse that completes the union.

People born in the years of the Snake and the Rooster often feel "on the same wavelength" with the Ox — a foundation for friendship, business partnership and mutual support.

Six harmony 六合: 子丑合

六合 (liù hé — "Six Harmony") links the Ox with the Rat: 子丑合 — 子 (zǐ — Rat) + 丑 (chǒu — Ox) are drawn together and form a union with an earthy nature. This is a "magnetic" pair: Ox and Rat reach for each other. In relationships this gives a feeling of comfort, reliability and mutual "bonding."

Clash 沖: 丑未冲 with the Goat

The Ox's chief antagonist is the 未 (wèi — Goat). The pair 丑未冲 (chǒu wèi chōng — "the clash of Ox and Goat") is a clash of two earths of opposite nature: the cold damp Earth of the Ox against the warm dry Earth of the Goat. The 沖 (chōng — "Clash") is the energy of change, movement and upheaval, not a verdict.

⚔️Ox ↔ Goat (丑未冲): this is a special "clash of storehouses" — both branches are warehouses, and their clash often "cracks open the safes." In a Goat year, an Ox person may experience the unlocking of the hidden: changes in property and resources, unexpected expenses or, conversely, gains. This is dynamism, not catastrophe — the full chart decides everything.

6 Ox birth years — a table of cycles 📅

The Ox returns once every 12 years, each time with a new heavenly stem. The full "stem + branch" cycle lasts 60 years. Here are the recent Ox cycles and their elemental coloring:

YearPillar (stem+branch)Year element
1973癸丑 (guǐ chǒu)Water Ox 💧
1985乙丑 (yǐ chǒu)Wood Ox 🌳
1997丁丑 (dīng chǒu)Fire Ox 🔥
2009己丑 (jǐ chǒu)Earth Ox ⛰️
2021辛丑 (xīn chǒu)Metal Ox ⚙️

Note: the Ox of 1985 (乙丑 (yǐ chǒu — Wood Ox)) and the Ox of 2021 (辛丑 (xīn chǒu — Metal Ox)) are different people in character. The Wood Ox is more flexible and gentle, the Metal Ox firmer and more principled. And remember: the boundaries of a year are set by the solar calendar (early February, around the festival of Lìchūn 立春), not January 1 — those born in January should check the date especially carefully, since the Ox is precisely the last month of winter.

7 Strengths and weaknesses of the Ox ⚖️

💪
Strengths
Perseverance, reliability, diligence, patience, discipline, solidity, faithfulness to one's word, a capacity for the long-term accumulation of resources.
🪨
Weaknesses
Stubbornness, slowness to change, conservatism, hidden emotions, a tendency to hold grudges, difficulty getting started on something new.

The earth nature gives the Ox stability, but that same density makes it inflexible. The Ox's strength unfolds when Fire warms its cold earth (giving warmth and direction) and a little Water and Wood enliven it — then the "frozen clay" becomes fertile soil.

8 Career and money for the Ox sign 💼

Earth is the element of stability, resources, real estate and long labor. And the hidden Metal (辛) adds precision and value to the Ox. So the Ox is traditionally suited to:

With money the Ox is reliable and inclined to save for the long haul: it builds capital slowly but solidly. And yet remember: real financial potential is determined not by the year but by the wealth star (財星 (cái xīng — "wealth star")) in the full chart and the luck pillars in which it activates.

💡Tip: for the Ox, the years that "crack open" the Metal storehouse are especially important. To understand when your "safe" opens for profit and when for expense, you need personal luck pillars (大運 (dà yùn — "10-year luck cycles")), not a generic "forecast for Oxen."

9 Love and relationships of the Ox ❤️

In love the Ox is faithful, solid and reliable. It does not scatter its feelings and seeks long, durable relationships. Beneath the calm exterior lies a deep emotionality (the water 癸 inside) that the Ox rarely displays — it is important for a partner to learn to read it without loud words.

And once again the main rule of BaZi: true compatibility is determined not by the year but by the spouse palace (夫妻宮 (fū qī gōng — "palace of spouses," the day branch)), the spouse star, and the interaction of both partners' Day Masters. "Ox and Goat are incompatible" is a myth; the full chart decides everything.

Your Day Master may be Fire that the cold Ox smothers — or Metal for which the Ox is a native storehouse and support. The very same "Year of the Ox" means the opposite in these cases. That is why a BaZi master never builds a conclusion on the year: they begin with the Day Master and read all eight characters together, taking into account whether the storehouse is open and where it works.

The Year of the Ox tells where you came from. The Day Master tells who you really are.

If you have read this far — you already know more about the Ox than 99% of those who google "Year of the Ox character."
