"The Year of the Ox is a year of toil and stability," people write at New Year. 🐂 The Ox is indeed one of the most respected signs: a symbol of perseverance, reliability and honest labor. But what lies behind it in genuine BaZi? In the system of earthly branches the Ox is 丑 (chǒu — Ox), the second branch, and behind its calm image hides one of the most complex and "loaded" branches of the whole cycle. Let's unpack it for real.

1 What the Year of the Ox 丑 means: branch, element, polarity 🐂

丑 (chǒu — Ox) is the second of the twelve earthly branches (地支 (dì zhī — "earthly branches")), following immediately after the Rat. By element 丑 belongs to Earth (土 (tǔ — "earth")), and by polarity it is Yin.

But this is a special kind of Earth. The Ox is "cold and damp Earth" (濕土 (shī tǔ — "damp earth")): frozen winter soil, clay at the end of winter, still holding moisture and ice within. This is not the dry, fertile tilled field of summer but heavy, dense, cooled earth. Hence the image of the Ox: slow, solid, enduring, able to bear weight.

A key feature of 丑 is that it is one of the four "earth storehouses" (墓庫 (mù kù — "grave-storehouse")). Specifically, the Ox is the storehouse of Metal: within it, as in a safe, metal energy is locked away. More on this in the next section.

So the Ox is the branch of transition and accumulation. The Ox's Earth holds within it the remnants of water (癸) and the seed of future metal (辛). It is a "warehouse" that sums up winter and prepares the ground for the spring Wood.

The practical meaning for a chart: the Ox is powerful but cold earth. For a Day Master of 丙 (bǐng — Yang Fire) or 丁 (dīng — Yin Fire) that needs warmth, the damp cold Ox can "smother" the fire. But for a Day Master of 庚 (gēng — Yang Metal) or 辛 (xīn — Yin Metal), the Ox is its native storehouse and support, a source of strength.

5 Ox compatibility: harmonies 三合, 六合 and the clash 沖

• 巳 (sì — Snake) — gives birth to metal (the start of metal energy).
• 酉 (yǒu — Rooster) — the peak, the core of pure metal.
• 丑 (chǒu — Ox) — the storehouse in which metal settles and accumulates.

Note: the Ox of 1985 (乙丑 (yǐ chǒu — Wood Ox)) and the Ox of 2021 (辛丑 (xīn chǒu — Metal Ox)) are different people in character. And remember: the boundaries of a year are set by the solar calendar (early February, around the festival of Lìchūn 立春), not January 1 — those born in January should check the date especially carefully, since the Ox is precisely the last month of winter.

The earth nature gives the Ox stability, but that same density makes it inflexible. The Ox's strength unfolds when Fire warms its cold earth (giving warmth and direction) and a little Water and Wood enliven it — then the "frozen clay" becomes fertile soil.
