Within the system of interactions between the Earthly Branches (地支, dì zhī) there are five types of relationship: unions 合 (hé), clashes 沖 (chōng), punishments 刑 (xíng), destructions 破 (pò) — and 害 (hài — "Harm"). 害 is the quietest of all conflicts. If 沖 (chōng) is open war, then 害 is betrayal by an ally. If 刑 (xíng) is punishment under the law, then 害 is a wound inflicted by someone close to you.
The mechanics of 害 are simple: a 害 forms when one branch "lures away" the partner of another branch from within the Six Unions (六合, liù hé — "the Six Unions"). For example, 子 (zǐ — Rat) and 丑 (chǒu — Ox) form a 六合. But 丑 (Ox) also tends to unite with 未 (wèi — Goat). When 丑 "leaves" for the Goat, the Rat is left deceived. This is 子未害 (zǐ wèi hài — "the Harm of Rat and Goat").
1 害 vs 沖: the fundamental difference
Before breaking down all six 害 pairs, it is important to understand how they differ from the better-known 沖 (chōng — clashes):
| Characteristic | 沖 Chōng (Clash) | 害 Hài (Harm) |
|---|---|---|
| Type of conflict | Open confrontation | Hidden depletion, betrayal |
| Source of the threat | From an obvious opponent | From "your own", from allies |
| Speed of impact | Fast and sharp | Gradual, unnoticed |
| Awareness | Obvious — "we were thrown into conflict" | Unclear why, but something is wrong |
| Emotional tone | Anger, conflict, rupture | Resentment, bewilderment, fatigue |
| In relationships | An open break | Gradual cooling, infidelity |
2 All six 害 pairs: each one examined
Earth controls Water, while the Goat (未, wèi) lures away the Ox (丑, chǒu) — the Rat's ally. Manifestations: emotional wounds in close relationships, especially with the mother or a maternal figure. A disrupted sense of nourishment and care. In women's charts — difficulties with carrying a pregnancy. Financial losses through relationships that seemed dependable.
Fire nourishes Earth, but the Horse (午, wǔ) "lures away" the union with the Goat (未, wèi), leaving the Ox without its expected partner. Manifestations: secret betrayals in business or career. Colleagues or bosses who appear to be allies act against your interests. Loss of a job or promotion through hidden intrigue.
Wood nourishes Fire, both Yang-active elements. The Snake (巳, sì) lures away the Monkey (申, shēn) — the Tiger's ally. Manifestations: a clash of ambitions, disputes between two strong personalities over power and leadership. Often — conflicts with people of equal strength. In health: disorders of the hands, the nervous system, the respiratory system.
Wood pierces Earth, both in the spring season. The Dragon (辰, chén) lures away the union with the Rooster (酉, yǒu) — the Rabbit's ally. Manifestations: wounds from those closest — relatives, children, neighbors. This is a 害 of a "domestic" nature: conflicts within the family that smolder for a long time. Property disputes among kin.
Metal generates Water, both in the autumn/winter season. The Pig (亥, hài) lures away the Tiger (寅, yín) — the Monkey's ally. Manifestations: financial losses through partners and friends. People trusted with money or business let you down. Especially painful for relationships between business partners.
Earth nourishes Metal, both autumn signs. The Dog (戌, xū) lures away the Rabbit (卯, mǎo) — the Rooster's ally. Manifestations: jealousy, infidelity, mixed feelings in relationships. The romantic sphere — third parties, unfaithfulness, complicated triangles. In career — competition with a "supposed ally".
3 How 害 manifests in life: three levels
In the natal chart
If 害 is present between two pillars of your natal chart, it is an innate pattern. You tend to encounter a particular kind of "hidden blow" on a regular basis. For example, 子未害 in a chart can indicate a chronic theme of broken expectations in relationships with the close women in your life (mother, wife, daughter).
In the Luck Pillars (大運, dà yùn) and Liu Nian (流年, liú nián — "the current year")
When a 大運 or 流年 period brings a branch that forms a 害 with a branch from your natal chart — that is an activation. The years when 害 "switches on" are often marked by betrayal, financial losses through partners, or disappointment in what you expected from those close to you.
In double Harms
If several 害 are present in a chart at once, that is an especially difficult configuration. A constant sense that "something is going wrong" without any obvious cause.
4 害 + 沖 at once: the most difficult configurations
When both 害 and 沖 are activated for the same branch — in the chart or across the periods — the strain is at its maximum. The branch is attacked simultaneously in the open (沖) and in secret (害), which completely destroys its positive function.
5 How to neutralize 害
In the BaZi tradition there is no magical way to "remove" 害 from a chart — but its activity can be reduced:
- 🛡️ Understanding the pattern: Recognizing that you are prone to a certain kind of "wounding" is already half the work. You begin to notice the signs before the blow lands;
- 🌿 Buffer elements: The element that "mediates" between the two conflicting branches softens the sharpness. For example, for 子未害 — Metal (which generates Water and nourishes Metal) can serve as a buffer;
- 🤝 Conscious choice of partners: If your chart carries 申亥害 — a history of financial losses through partners calls for particular caution when choosing business allies;
- 📅 Planning outside of dangerous periods: Avoid major financial decisions and new partnerships in the years/decades that activate the 害 in your chart.
