If Liù Hé is the "marriage of two," then Sān Hé (三合 (sān hé — "Three Harmonies")) is the "army of three." The four three-branch harmonies of the earthly branches form the most powerful combinations in BaZi: they fully transform the branches into a single element and can overturn an entire chart. When three "allies" gather in the chart, the luck pillar, or the annual branch, events occur that are remembered for decades: business empires, lavish weddings, moves across the ocean, unexpected inheritances — or, conversely, catastrophic losses.
In the classical Ziping (子平) canon it is said: "三合者, 全會其氣, 變一物也" — "The Three Harmonies gather all the energy into one and turn it into a single entity." This is not mere "friendship" between branches — it is their complete transformation into a unified "squad" of a single element. Understanding Sān Hé is the level of a BaZi master.
1 What Sān Hé Is — Definition and History
Sān Hé is the union of three earthly branches located four positions apart from one another on the annual cycle. They represent three phases in the life of an element: birth → peak → burial. When all three gather together, they form the "complete life cycle" of a single element and turn all their energy into that element.
For example, in the union Hai-Mao-Wei → Wood:
- Hai (亥) — the birthplace of Wood (生 — the early winter seed).
- Mao (卯) — the peak of Wood (旺 — the spring bloom).
- Wei (未) — the burial of Wood (墓 — the summer drought, where the roots are stored).
This is the "cycle of the element" following the principle of the 12 life phases. The three points are not only beginning-middle-end, but also the three "triangular supports" on which the entire element stands. Geometrically, on the BaZi circle they form an equilateral triangle.
The origin of Sān Hé is tied to Chinese astronomy and the theory of the five elements from the Han dynasty. As early as the treatise 淮南子 ("Huainanzi," 2nd century BCE) these triangular seasonal groups are described. By the Tang era (7th–9th centuries) Sān Hé had become established in the metaphysical systems, including the BaZi of Xu Ziping (徐子平) — the father of the classical Ziping school, on which the modern Joey Yap canon is based.
2 The Complete List — All Four Unions
All four Three Harmonies and their transformed elements:
| Union | Characters | Animals | Element | Phases |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hai — Mao — Wei | 亥 — 卯 — 未 | Pig — Rabbit — Goat | Wood 木 | Birth → Peak → Burial |
| Yin — Wu — Xu | 寅 — 午 — 戌 | Tiger — Horse — Dog | Fire 火 | Birth → Peak → Burial |
| Si — You — Chou | 巳 — 酉 — 丑 | Snake — Rooster — Ox | Metal 金 | Birth → Peak → Burial |
| Shen — Zi — Chen | 申 — 子 — 辰 | Monkey — Rat — Dragon | Water 水 | Birth → Peak → Burial |
Note the pattern: the central branch of each union (Mao, Wu, You, Zi) is the "king of the season," the purest branch of the given element. Without it, the union is incomplete.
Partial Unions (Bàn Sān Hé, 半三合)
If only two of the three branches are present in the chart, this is called a half-union. There are two types:
- Birth + Peak (Hai-Mao, Yin-Wu, Si-You, Shen-Zi) — the "union of rising." A growing, beginning force. Stronger than the second type.
- Peak + Burial (Mao-Wei, Wu-Xu, You-Chou, Zi-Chen) — the "union of setting." A waning, accumulated force. Weaker, but more stable.
A half-union gives roughly 50–60% of the full Sān Hé effect. When the third branch arrives through Da Yun or Liu Nian, the union "activates" fully.
3 The Mechanics of Interaction — How the Elements Change
To understand Sān Hé deeply, you need to know the three levels of its action. The Joey Yap school distinguishes them clearly:
1. Full transformation (合化成功)
All three branches present + a catalyst stem + a supporting season. Then the entire "triangular energy" fully becomes a single element. This grants enormous power — but it can also "flood" the chart if the element is unfavorable.
2. Union without transformation (合而不化)
The three branches are present, but there is no catalyst, or the season is against it. Then they "work together," strengthening one another, but do not transform. This is the most common case in real charts.
3. Freezing (合住)
If the Sān Hé branches are occupied in the combination, they are "distracted" — they do not work as individual branches. This is a plus if they were your enemies, and a minus if they were your helpers.
4 Sān Hé in the Natal Chart — What It Means
To find Sān Hé in a chart is to find the main "engine" of destiny. If it is present, your life will have a clear direction and major events tied precisely to that element.
Interpretation by Type
- Hai-Mao-Wei (Wood) — growth, expansion, learning, long-term projects. Often teachers, writers, founders of schools, reformers.
- Yin-Wu-Xu (Fire) — fame, charisma, public life, creativity. Performers, opinion leaders, politicians, style icons.
- Si-You-Chou (Metal) — precision, discipline, power, a military or financial career. Managers, soldiers, bankers, surgeons.
- Shen-Zi-Chen (Water) — wisdom, diplomacy, trade, travel. Diplomats, philosophers, merchants, sailors, psychologists.
The Half-Union — Unrealized Potential
If a chart contains only two of the three branches of a union, it means you have a "missing link." Life itself will lead you to moments when the third branch arrives through Da Yun or Liu Nian — and then you will experience an "activation of your mission." Until that moment, there may be a feeling of "something unfinished," a lingering anticipation.
5 Sān Hé in Da Yun — Activation in the Luck Pillar
This is the most fateful activation in BaZi. When a luck pillar brings the missing third branch of a half-union in the chart, the decade becomes "decisive." In the classics these 10 years are called "the time of manifestation."
What Happens Upon Full Activation
- A sharp rise in career in the direction set by the union's element.
- Major financial events (both gains and losses — if the element is unfavorable).
- Relocations to other countries or cities.
- Major life decisions: marriage, divorce, starting a business.
- Illnesses or injuries connected to the organs of the element (if the union is harmful).
An Example of Activation
A person with Hai and Mao in the chart (a half-union of Wood) encounters a Da Yun with a stem-branch containing Wei. Now Hai-Mao-Wei is complete. If Wood is a favorable element (for example, for a Day Master Bǐng-Fire), this decade will bring enormous creative growth, success in learning, in the education business, in publishing. If Wood is unfavorable (for example, for a Day Master Gēng-Metal), this decade will be very hard: financial losses, conflicts, exhaustion.
6 Sān Hé in Liu Nian — Annual Activation
Each year has its own branch. If it completes a half-union in the chart, the year becomes a "year of activation." This level is weaker than Da Yun, but still very noticeable.
Typical Events of Annual Activation
- A wedding, a breakup, the birth of a child.
- A change of job, a relocation, emigration.
- The purchase or sale of major real estate.
- A sharp inflow or outflow of money.
- Career upheavals — promotions or dismissals.
- Loud conflicts or their resolution.
An Example of Annual Activation
A woman has Si-You in her chart (a half-union of Metal). In 2021 (辛丑, Xīn-Chou) Chou arrived — Si-You-Chou became complete. If Metal is her favorable element (for example, she is a Day Master Guǐ-Water), it was a "golden year": a promotion, a new home, marriage. If Metal is harmful, it was a year of injury or surgery.
7 Positive Effects — When Sān Hé Works for You
When the union's element coincides with your favorable element (Yong Shen), Sān Hé becomes one of destiny's most precious gifts. It gives:
The great leaders and entrepreneurs of history — Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, Jack Ma, Steve Jobs — almost all have powerful Sān Hé in their charts, activating precisely in the years of their breakthroughs.
8 Negative Effects — When Sān Hé Breaks the Balance
Sān Hé is power, but power in itself is neutral. If it is directed against you, the consequences can be severe.
1. Strengthening a Harmful Element
If the union's element is your "killer" (Qi Sha) or an exhausting element, Sān Hé creates an "avalanche" of that energy. These are years of major losses, conflicts, serious illnesses. It is especially dangerous if the union touches the Day or Hour position.
2. Overloading the Chart
Even a favorable element is harmful in excess. If your "wealth" is Wood, and Hai-Mao-Wei arrives — the money is there, but control is lost. Often these are years when "easy money" turned into "easy losses."
3. The Capture of Other Branches
If a branch in the Sān Hé was your "useful element" in its original nature, and has now become part of the transformation, it "loses" its personal nature. It is as if you lose part of your strength. Example: Chen (辰) stores Water, Wood, and Earth. If it falls into Shen-Zi-Chen → Water, its Earth and Wood "leave." If you needed them — that is a loss.
4. "Bound" Freedom
Sān Hé requires "working as a team." If by nature you are a loner, this bond can feel like a burden. You cannot develop without partners, without a team, without a collective. It is both a strength and a tie.
9 Combinations with Other Bonds
Sān Hé + Liù Hé
If a branch occupied in a Sān Hé simultaneously forms a Liù Hé with another branch, the Sān Hé usually "pulls" the strength to itself. A three-branch union is stronger than a paired one. But Liù Hé creates a "second obligation," and the person feels "torn" between two commitments.
Sān Hé + Chōng (clash)
If the central branch of the Sān Hé (Mao, Wu, You, Zi) clashes with the opposing branch (You, Zi, Mao, Wu respectively), the union is destroyed. In the classics this is called the "breaking of the triangle." If, however, an outer branch clashes (Hai/Wei, Yin/Xu, etc.), the union is weakened, but not destroyed.
Sān Hé + Xíng (punishment)
If a punishment is involved in the Sān Hé, the union comes "through pain." For example, success is achieved, but with a scandal or conflict. Money arrives, but with a lawsuit. Often these are "loud stories" with an ambivalent ending.
Sān Hé + the Seasonal Union Sān Huì (三會)
If the chart contains a complete seasonal union (Yin-Mao-Chen — spring, Si-Wu-Wei — summer, etc.) and a Sān Hé in parallel, this is a "double force." A very rare but most powerful configuration. Often the destinies of outstanding historical figures.
10 Practical Examples from Charts
Example 1. An entrepreneur with Shen-Zi-Chen (Water)
A man born in 1972, day Bǐng-Shen (丙申), hour Rén-Chen (壬辰). His chart has Shen and Chen (a half-union of Water). In the Da Yun of 2013–2023, Zi arrived — the union became complete. Water for the Day Master Bǐng is "career and power." In these 10 years he built an international restaurant network, expanding into 17 countries. After 2023 the union began to wane — the expansion slowed, and stabilization set in.
Example 2. A woman with Yin-Wu-Xu (Fire)
Born in 1988, day Guǐ-Yin (癸寅). She has Yin and Xu in her chart (a half-union of Fire). In 2026 (丙午, Bǐng-Wu) Wu arrived — the union became complete. Fire for the Day Master Guǐ is "wealth and husband." In 2026 she married a wealthy entrepreneur and at the same time launched her own brand. A double activation of the year.
Example 3. A teacher with Hai-Mao-Wei (Wood)
A man born in 1965, day Bǐng-Wei (丙未). His chart has Hai (year), Mao (month), Wei (day) — a complete Sān Hé. Wood for the Day Master Bǐng is "knowledge and the nurturing mother." He became a renowned professor of philosophy, wrote 30 books, founded a school. Sān Hé is his "mission," and he lived it out.

Calculate your chart for free →Example 4. A victim of a harmful Sān Hé
A woman with a Day Master Jiǎ (Wood). Her chart has Si and You (a half-union of Metal). Metal chops Wood — this is the "killer" of the Day Master. In the Da Yun of 2015–2025, Chou arrived — Si-You-Chou became complete. During these years she endured a difficult divorce, the loss of her business, and surgery. Sān Hé works powerfully — but against her. Knowing this would have helped her strengthen her "defense" in advance: adding Water (which drains Metal), avoiding risky decisions.
Example 5. A half-union awaiting activation
A young man with Yin and Xu in his chart (a half-union of Fire), Day Master Rén (Water). Fire for Rén is wealth. Until Wu-Horse arrives in Da Yun or Liu Nian, his "wealth" remains "dormant." In 2026 (the year of Wu-Horse) the full Sān Hé activated — a sharp inflow of money through investments.
Conclusion
The Three Harmonies Sān Hé are the "oceanic currents" of your destiny. They drive major events, shape ten-year cycles, create "waves of arrival and departure." By understanding them in your chart, you gain access to the strategic level of life planning: you know when to expect the "big waves," when to ride them, and when to fortify yourself.
In the world of BaZi, Sān Hé is a "turbine." It can lift you to the heavens or sink you in the ocean. The difference lies not in the union itself, but in how well you understand your chart and the elements. Knowledge is the only defense and the only path to harnessing this colossal force.
