How to Read Your Partner from the Chart

Marriage is perhaps the foremost question of life that people bring to a BaZi master. "When will I get married?", "What will my husband be like?", "Why do all my relationships end badly?", "Should I marry this person?". In the classical tradition there are precise answers to these questions — because the birth chart holds within it the entire script of marital destiny. You only need to know how to read it.

In the classic treatise 滴天髓 it is said: «夫妻宫者, 日支也; 夫星妻星, 隱於四柱» — "The Spouse Palace is the Day Branch; the husband star and wife star are hidden within the four pillars." This short formula contains the entire system of reading marriage. Today we will examine it in full.

1 The Day of Birth — a Portrait of the Spouse (Day Branch = Spouse Palace)

The second layer of reading is the spouse star, hidden within the concealed stems of the branches. Following the Joey Yap canon:

• For a man — the wife star is the Direct Wealth (正財 (zhèng cái — "Direct Wealth")). That is, the element the Day Master controls. For example, for a Jiǎ (Wood) Day Master — this is Earth.
• For a woman — the husband star is the Direct Officer (正官 (zhèng guān — "Direct Officer")). That is, the element that controls the Day Master. For a Jiǎ (Wood) Day Master — this is Metal.

Where to Look for the "Spouse Star"

The spouse star may be visible:

1. On the stems (openly) — the relationship is "transparent," the spouse is socially active.
2. In the hidden stems of the branches — the relationship is "concealed," the spouse is either invisible to society, or arrives from an unexpected place.
3. Only in the Day Branch — the strongest pattern, the spouse is "right in the focus of life."
4. Not visible at all — difficult to find a spouse, late marriage, monasticism.

What if There Are Many Spouse Stars?

If a man's chart has many Wealth stars (riches/wives) or a woman's chart has many Officer stars (officers/husbands), this is a "multiple marriage." Possible outcomes:

• Several official marriages (divorces and remarriages).
• Parallel relationships (secret ones, while married).
• Professions with many partners (actors, musicians, salespeople).
• Many romances without marriage.

What if There Is No Spouse Star?

If the chart entirely lacks Wealth (for a man) or Officer (for a woman), this is a "solitary chart." It does not mean "will never marry," but it indicates:

• Late marriage (after 35–40 years old).
• A difficult search for a partner.
• Often — choosing a path without marriage (career, spirituality).
• Marriage arrives through a Da Yun that brings the missing element.

3 When Marriage Happens — Peach Blossom, Red Phoenix, Heavenly Joy

This is the most applied question: "when will I get married?". In BaZi there are several "marriage indicators" (神煞, Shen Sha) that signal the approach of a wedding.

桃花 (táo huā — "Peach Blossom") Peach Blossom

The "Peach Blossom" is the chief star of love. It is the branch that activates romance. The Peach Blossom is determined by the year of birth:

When the Peach Blossom arrives in a Da Yun or Liu Nian, this is a "year of romance." A high likelihood of meeting someone, becoming infatuated, falling in love. It does not always end in marriage — sometimes it is simply a vivid romance.

紅鸞 (hóng luán — "Red Phoenix") Red Phoenix

This is the strongest "marriage" Shen Sha. When the Red Phoenix is activated through a Da Yun or Liu Nian, this is a "wedding year." It is determined by the year of birth; the formula is more complex (you need a calculator), but the effect is clear.

天喜 (tiān xǐ — "Heavenly Joy") Heavenly Joy

The "star of happy events." Activation in a Da Yun/Liu Nian brings a wedding, the birth of a child, an engagement. It often works in tandem with the Red Phoenix.

Activation of the Day Branch

The most reliable signal is when a Da Yun or Liu Nian brings a branch that forms a Liu He or San He with the Day Branch. This is the "activation of the Spouse Palace." If the Peach Blossom or Red Phoenix is working in parallel — marriage is almost guaranteed.

4 Signs of a Happy Marriage

Not all marriages are alike. The chart shows exactly which kind awaits you. Signs of a harmonious marriage:

• The Day Master and the spouse star in proper balance — neither do you dominate, nor are you suppressed.
• In the Da Yun in which you enter marriage, an active Yong Shen — the years are favorable.
• The Hour Pillar supports the Day Branch — after marriage come children, the continuation of the lineage.
• The chart contains Chén or Yǒu (noble stars) — these are signs of social happiness within the family.

5 Signs of a Difficult Marriage

And now the alarming signals. If they are present, marriage is possible — but it will require serious work and awareness.

The Main "Red Flags"

1. Clash on the Day Branch. In the native chart or activated in a Da Yun. A direct blow to the "Spouse Palace."
2. The spouse star = your "killer" (Seven Killings or depletion). Marriage weakens you rather than strengthening you.
3. Several Wealth / several Officer openly on the stems. Multiple marriages, affairs, romances.
4. The spouse star is absent. Hard to find, late marriage, celibacy.
5. Liu He of the Day Branch with an "enemy". Marriage binds you to a toxic person.
6. A Punishment affecting the Day Branch. Hidden conflicts, betrayals, deceptions, legal disputes.
7. A weak Day Master + an excessively strong spouse star. Suppression in marriage, loss of self.
8. An excess of Peach Blossom (several Peach Blossom branches in the chart). Amorousness, an inability to choose one partner.

6 Multiple Marriages in the Chart — How to Read Them

This is a delicate topic, but an important one. In BaZi the signs of "multiple marriages" are clearly visible. Acknowledging them is not a "verdict," but an opportunity to prepare.

Signs of Multiplicity

• For a man: a multitude of Wealth (Direct + Indirect Wealth) on the stems. Especially if they are "healthy" and active in a Da Yun.
• For a woman: a multitude of Officer (Direct + Indirect Officer, 七殺 (qī shā — "Seven Killings")). Especially if the Seven Killings dominate — these are "illegitimate" relationships or unconventional marriages.
• A Clash on the Day Branch in middle age: the first marriage falls apart, then a second arrives.
• The spouse star in the Day Branch + another on a different pillar: "the first spouse is near, the second is somewhere else."

How to Work With This

1. Accept the reality of the chart. Do not try to "hold on to" a marriage the chart shows to be temporary.
2. Choose your first partner consciously. If the chart shows 2–3 marriages, the first is often a "learning" one — do not invest your entire life in it up to retirement.
3. Know the "years of transition". When a Clash on the Day Branch arrives — prepare for changes.
4. Do not let it reach a Punishment. If it is already clear the relationship has ended — part with dignity, without scandals and courts.

7 Compatibility of Two Charts

This is perhaps the most popular service offered by BaZi masters. The compatibility of two people is determined by combining their charts across several levels.

Level 1: Day Master

The most superficial — yet fundamental — layer. The partner's Day Master should be in a harmonious relationship with your Day Master:

• Ideal — they produce you, or they are controlled by what you need. For example, Jiǎ (Wood) + Guǐ (Water) — Water nourishes Wood.
• Good — same-element Day Masters (Jiǎ + Jiǎ) — these are "siblings," working as equals.
• Difficult — they cut you, or you cut them. For example, Jiǎ (Wood) + Gēng (Metal) — Metal cuts Wood. Conflicts over leadership are possible.

Level 2: Day Branch (the Spouse Palace)

This is the key level. It is ideal if the Day Branches of two people form a Liu He. For example, he has Zǐ, she has Chǒu — Zǐ-Chǒu Liu He. This is a "marriage of the palaces."

It is good if the Day Branches belong to a single San He. For example, he has Shēn, she has Chén — both are in Shēn-Zǐ-Chén.

It is bad if the Day Branches form a Clash or a Punishment. This is a "built-in conflict" between them.

Level 3: Yong Shen and Elements

The partner brings the element you need. If they are strong Fire and you need Fire — excellent. If they are Metal and Metal is harmful to you — difficult.

Level 4: Beneficial Stars

It is good when the partner's chart contains stars that support your Day Branch. Especially valuable are: Tian Yi (天乙, the Nobleman), Tian Xi (天喜, joy), Yue De (月德, virtue).

8 Divorces — a Clash of the Spouse Palace

Divorce in the chart is always a Clash or Punishment of the Day Branch. There is no such thing as a divorce "out of nowhere" — it is always visible in the chart.

Types of "Divorce" Patterns

• A Clash on the Day Branch in the native chart — a high risk of divorce over the course of life. Especially if the "spouse stars" are simultaneously multiple or unhealthy.
• A Clash on the Day Branch in a Da Yun — the specific 10-year period when it may occur. The scenario depends on other factors.
• A Clash on the Day Branch in a Liu Nian — the specific year of activation. Often the events are swift.
• A Punishment on the Day Branch — a hidden destruction of the marriage. Divorce arrives after a long, underlying conflict.
• The spouse star in the Mu Ku (storage) + a Clash — this is "the loss of a spouse," sometimes through death, sometimes through divorce.

How to Minimize the Risk

1. Late marriage — if there is a risk of divorce in the chart, a late marriage (after 30–35) often fares better: the person is already more mature.
2. A partner with a "holding" chart — if the partner has a branch in their Day Branch that forms a Liu He with yours, this softens the Clash.
3. Know the year of activation — prepare in advance: therapy, communication, travel together, relocation.
4. Avoid the mistakes of Punishment — do not allow it to reach betrayals, secrets, manipulations. The more "honest" the marriage, the less Punishment.

9 What to Do if the Chart Is Unfavorable

Suppose you looked at the chart and found "bad" signs: a Clash on the Day Branch, multiple Wealth/Officer, the absence of a spouse star. What should you do?

When the Day Branches of two people belong to a single Triple Union (for example, he has Shēn, she has Zǐ), the marriage becomes part of a "great life project." These are couples who build empires together: businesses, charitable foundations, political movements.
