In classical BaZi, there is a principle that may seem illogical at first glance: sometimes Weakness imparts greater power than strength.This paradox lies at the heart of so-called... Cong Ge (從格 (cūn gé — "following the element"))— "following charts," special formats where the Day Master is so weak that instead of struggling, it completely surrenders to the dominant element—gaining immense power through this capitulation.

This is one of the most subtle and counterintuitive topics in BaZi. Many practitioners avoid it because misidentifying Cong Ge (cóng gé — Combination) means giving advice to a client that contradicts reality. However, when you master recognizing these charts, you gain access to reading the most vibrant destinies: those of great entrepreneurs, statesmen, and world-class artists.

In this article, we will analyze five main types of Cong Ge (cóng gé — Combination), the signs of each, the fate characteristics of carriers of such charts, and dangerous moments when the format "breaks." 1 What is Following (Cong)

Ieroglyph 從 In Chinese, (Cong) means "to follow," "to submit to," or "to go after someone." In the context of BaZi, this is a profound philosophical term: Sacrificing one's own identity to merge with a greater force..

Imagine a small stream flowing into a great river. The stream does not try to "preserve itself" — it becomes the river and reaches the ocean. If the stream had tried to "remain a stream," it would have dried up in the first drought. But by yielding, it gains access to the power of the entire river.

The same occurs in the Cong Ge (cóng gé — Concealed Structure). The Day Master, seeing that the surrounding elements are far stronger than itself, ceases to resist and... becomes part of the dominant element.From this point on, the chart is read as if the dominant element IS "you." The Useful God changes, favorable luck pillars shift, and the entire logic of interpretation flips upside down.

The classics warn: Cong is a complete capitulation, not a partial one.If the Day Master retains even a slightest "root" or support, Cong does not occur, and the chart is read as an ordinary weak one. This is critically important: Almost Cong is not actually Cong..

2 When the Day Master completely surrenders

The conditions for the Day Master's complete capitulation are stringent. All five must be met simultaneously:

1. The Day Master has no root in the Earthly Branches. None of the Four Pillars branches contain an element identical to the Day Master or directly supporting it.
2. There is no "Mother" on the stems. On the Heavenly Stems (Year, Month, Hour), there is no element that nourishes the Day Master.
3. The dominant element is represented multiple times. When at least 5 or 6 of the 8 elements in the BaZi chart belong to the same element (or its direct helpers), it indicates a strong dominance of that particular energy.
4. The birth season supports the dominant element. or at least does not contradict it.
5. There is no "Savior". In the chart, there is no element that could revitalize the Day Master.

If 4 out of 5 conditions are met, it is a "False" or "Impure" Cong (Jiá cóng gé). Such charts are particularly complex: they oscillate between following and resisting, which manifests in real life as constant internal conflicts and an unstable destiny.

In classical texts, there is a phrase: «從之真者, 富貴; 從之假者, 貧賤» "True adherence leads to wealth and nobility; false adherence leads to poverty and low status." In other words, the purer the Cong, the more magnificent the destiny.

3 Cong Cai Ge 從財格 — Following Wealth

The first and perhaps the most famous type of 冲 (chōng — Clash) is Cong Cai (Cóng Cái), "Following Wealth". Here, the dominant element is the one that the Day Master would normally "control" as wealth in a balanced chart.

For example, if your Day Master is Jia (Wood), then Wealth is Earth. In the Cong Cai Ge chart, Earth is overwhelming: the Month Branch is Earth, the Hour Branch is Earth, and the Stems are Ji or Wu. Wood has neither roots nor Water. Jia completely "surrenders" to Earth and itself becomes "Wealth."

Useful Elements in Cong Cai Ge:

• Earth (Dominant Element) — the foundation of destiny.
• Fire (his "mother" generates Earth) — nourishes Wealth.
• Metal (Earth Exits) — activates Wealth into action, investments, and new forms.

Unfavorable (Jì shén):

• Wood Day Master attempts to "control" Earth, but in Cong Ge this destroys the structure.
• Water (Mother of the Day Master) — revives Wood and also breaks Cong.

Carriers of the Cong Cai Ge are... Magnetic people for wealth are those whose BaZi charts feature a strong Day Master (日主) harmoniously supported by their Useful God (用神), typically aligning with the Wealth Star (财星) or Officer Star (官星). This configuration attracts financial opportunities naturally, much like a magnet draws metal.They think in terms of business, instinctively understand the market, and their hands naturally reach for money. Often these are entrepreneurs, investors, or owners of major assets. Their lives revolve around material matters—not out of greed, but due to a natural inclination.

Among the well-known carriers of Cong Cai according to classical sources are many major merchants of ancient and medieval China, founders of merchant dynasties.

4 Cong Sha Ge 從殺格 — Following Power

The second major type is— Cong Sha (From Killings), also known as Cong Guan (Qing Guan) depending on which specific "authority" dominates — Yang (Qi Sha, 七殺). (qi sha — "Seven Killings")or Yin Guan (zhèng guān — Right Officer). (zhèng guān — "Direct Officer")Here, the Day Master surrenders to the element that normally "controls" it in a balanced chart.

Example: Day Master is Jia (Wood), while Metal dominates (Geng, Xin, Shen branch, You branch). In the Cong Sha Ge structure, although Metal "chops" Wood, the Wood fully surrenders to Metal and becomes part of this configuration.

Useful Elements:

• Metal (Dominant Element) — the foundation of destiny.
• Earth (Mother of Metal) — nourishes Authority.
• Water (Metal Output) — brings Authority into action, but with caution — it may revitalize the Day Master.

Unfavorable (Jì shén):

• Fire (Metal control) — destroys the dominant element.
• Wood Day Master (rì zhǔ — Day Master) — attempts to resist.

Cong Sha are cards. state officials, military commanders, politicians, and top executives of major corporationsTheir nature is to manage, bear responsibility, and act within hierarchical systems. Often these are individuals with a very willful character, unafraid of pressure and capable of making decisions that affect hundreds or even thousands of lives.

5 Cong Er Ge 從兒格 — Following Output

The third type is— Cong Er (Cong'er), "following the child". Here, the character 儿 ("child") signifies that the Day Master "produces" — the Output element (Shi Shen and Shang Guan). In Cong'er Ge, the Day Master fully surrenders to the element of its own "creativity".

Example: Day Master — Jia (Wood), Fire (Bing, Ding, Si, Wu) dominates. Wood generates Fire, but in Cong Er Ge it is completely "burned" by the Fire and merges with it.

Useful Elements:

• Fire (Dominant Element) — the foundation of destiny.
• Wood Day Master — nourishes Fire; therefore, in Cong Er, unlike other Congs, the native element can be beneficial (a nuance of the Ziping school).
• Earth (Fire emergence) — continuation of the cycle.

Unfavorable (Jì shén):

• Water — destroys Fire, breaking the structure.
• Metal — attempts to cut down the Wood, but in Cong Er this does not work purely.

Cong Er Ge — this is The BaZi charts of creative geniuseswriters, artists, musicians, inventors, and actors. Their nature is to produce, create, and express. They "burn" for their craft in the literal sense: everything within them is poured out through creativity.

Many famous artists, poets, and philosophers of ancient China had pure Cong Er charts. In modern times, these are often the charts of successful authors, designers, and directors.

6 Cong Shi Ge 從勢格 / Cong Ren Ge 從人格 — the "House of Friends"

The fifth and rarer type is— Cong Shi (Trend-following) or Cong Ren (Cóng rén), "following strength/people". This is a case where in the chart Multiple elements dominate simultaneously rather than just one., and the Day Master yields not to a specific element, but to the overall trend of the chart.

For example, if the Day Master is 甲 (Jiǎ), and Fire, Earth, and Metal are strongly represented in the chart (the entire "descending" sequence following Wood), 甲 cannot yield to just one element because all of them are present—it yields to the entire "flow."

In the Cong Shi Ge chart, all elements are beneficial except for the Day Master and its "Resource Star," which are specifically harmful.

Carriers of the Cong Shi Ge are... Diplomats, negotiators, mediators, and flexible leaders.They are adept at "adapting to any environment," finding common ground with the most diverse people, and sensing which way the wind blows. Their careers are often linked to negotiations, high-level politics, diplomacy, and mediation.

7 Strengths of such charts

Why are pure Canopy Stars (华盖 huá gài) so highly valued in the classics? Because they grant... maximum concentration of energy in a single directionSuch a person has no internal conflicts between different elements—the entire chart works toward a single goal.

Strengths:

• Huge concentration of willpowerThe carrier of the Canopy Star (Huà Gài — Huà Gài) does not tear themselves apart between different priorities. They know what is most important to them and move toward it.
• Natural talent in one's field.Cong Cai (cóng cái — Wealth Star) represents money; Cong Sha (qī shā — Seven Killings) represents authority; Cong Er (cóng ér — Output Stars) represents creativity. They possess an "innate intuition."
• Ability to achieve great accomplishmentsIn the correct Luck Pillar, Cong Ge (Tong Ge — Canopy Star) brings grand success that surpasses any ordinary chart.
• Absence of fluctuationsIf a normal person can hesitate, Cong Ge simply moves forward.
• MagnetismPure, concentrated energy attracts people and resources. Those around can sense the "power" of the Canopy Star (华盖 huá gài) carrier.

8 Weaknesses (Dependency)

But there is a flip side to Cong Ge. Total capitulation means... Dependence on external circumstancesA Day Master without its own "dominant element" is like a fish without water.

Weaknesses:

• Fragility of Identity. If Cong Cai loses money, he loses himself. If Cong Sha loses his position, he falls into depression. Their "self" is fused with the dominant element.
• Inability to live an "ordinary" life. Cong Ge cannot become a regular clerk and be happy; they need the scale of their element.
• Vulnerability to "breaks" (冲 chōng — Clash). When the Luck Pillars bring an adversarial element, a person with the Canopy Star (华盖 huá gài) endures catastrophic periods far more severe than those experienced by a normal chart during difficult times.
• One-sided personality. All talents are concentrated in one sphere, while other areas (family, health, spirituality) often suffer.
• High stakes for error. Cong Ge cannot "shift to another sphere" — doing so would destroy the format. They are compelled to walk a single path throughout their entire life.

9 When the chart breaks (during an unfavorable Luck Pillar)

The most dramatic moment in the life of a Cong Ge (Cong Ge — 從格) Day Master is... The luck pillar that brings the "savior" Useful God for the Day Master.This period is known as the Classic Era in classical BaZi. Destruction of the format (破) (破格, Po Ge).

For example, a carrier of Cong Cai (Jia, surrendering to Earth) may have Ren (Ren, Yang Water) appearing in one of the Four Pillars. Water is the "Mother" of Wood and attempts to revitalize the Day Master. However, the Day Master has long since surrendered; it possesses no real energy—only an "illusion" of revival. This conflict between two realities within the chart leads to catastrophes:

• Financial Crashes Cong Cai loses the accumulated wealth over decades.
• Loss of power and position Cong Sha (cóng shā — Sealed Officer) causes displacement, dismissal, and political scandals.
• Creative block and failures Cong Er loses inspiration and projects fail.
• Severe illnesses — especially related to the organs of the "vivifying" element.
• Breakup of key relationships The partner who was the "dominant environment" is departing.

10 Famous Cong Ge BaZi charts

Classical Chinese literature on BaZi preserves dozens of analyses of historical figures whose charts are known as Cong Ge. Among the most frequently cited are:

Cong Cai — Emperors-Merchants and Merchants

Many founders of the largest trading houses during the Qing Dynasty possessed pure Cong Cai (cóng cái — Wealth Star). Their lives exemplify how total dedication to money and material wealth can transform into riches beyond imagination. Often, they left behind financial empires that endured for centuries.

Cong Sha (cóng shā — Following Officer) — Generals and State Ministers

Many military commanders of the Tang and Song dynasties, renowned for their great victories, possessed Cong Sha Ge (cóng shā gé — Tiger's Claw). Their charts reveal how complete dedication to serving Authority grants the ability to command armies and empires.

Cong Er — Poets and Philosophers

Great Tang Dynasty poets such as Li Bai and Du Fu, according to preserved biographical data, possessed BaZi charts close to Cong Er or Cong Wang with a focus on the Output stars (食伤 shí shāng — Output stars). Their works became immortal precisely because they completely "burned" themselves in their art.

Modern Examples

In modern times, the following BaZi charts are classified as Cong Ge (cóng gé — Canopy Star):

• Some well-known billionaire entrepreneurs (Cong Cai), whose lives are literally composed of business.
• Long-term leaders of states and major corporations (Cong Sha).
• Great directors, actors, and musicians (Cong Er) with a unique creative style.
• High-level diplomats and mediators of international conflicts (Cong Shi).

But it is important to remember: accurately identifying the Can Ge (cán gé — Hidden Stem) requires not only birth data but also the hour of birth and verification against one's actual life destiny. Many "fortune tellers" attribute the Can Ge to celebrities indiscriminately without understanding the details.

If preliminary signs suggest you may have Cong Ge (cóng gé — Hidden Stem Clashing), do not draw your own conclusions. This area requires consultation with an experienced BaZi Master, as the cost of error is too high. An incorrectly identified format will turn the entire chart analysis into its opposite.

But if your chart is truly Cong Ge (Cóng Gé), this is a unique opportunity. By understanding your nature, you stop fighting against what is inherently unchangeable within you. You cease trying to be "balanced" and instead become fully yourself. And as the classics teach, this is the path to true happiness and self-realization.
