In classical BaZi, there is a fundamental principle: Strength is achieved through balance.The Day Master should be "neither too strong nor too weak"; the elements in the chart must mutually support and control one another for life to flow harmoniously. This principle forms the foundation of work with BaZi (八字). Yong Shen (用神 (Yung Shen — "Useful God")(useful god) — the element that restores balance.

But the classics of the Song and Ming dynasties already knew: There are charts where the principle of balance does not apply.In these cases, one element is so dominant that any attempt to "balance" it leads to catastrophe. These charts are called... special formats Special Pattern (Te Bie Ge), or simply Ge Ju (Patterns) — structures with a different logic.

In this article, we will explore what the BaZi chart format is in general, how a standard format differs from a special one, and what types of Cong Ge (cong ge — Special Combination) exist. 1 What is the "Chart Format" (Ge Ju — Ge Ju)? In BaZi, this refers to the specific structural pattern formed by the interaction between the Day Master and the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches of the Four Pillars. It determines the primary method for selecting the Useful God (yòng shén — Useful God) and Unfavorable God (jì shén — Unfavorable God), serving as the foundational framework for analyzing a person's destiny, strengths, and weaknesses.

Word Ge Ju (Pattern) literally translates as "structure" or "model." In the classical BaZi system, this refers to... The fundamental architecture of the BaZi chart. — how the energy of the Five Elements is organized around the Day Master. The chart format is not merely a description but a key to interpretation: it determines which element is favorable for you, which luck pillars will be auspicious, and how your life will unfold.

In the classics 子平真詮 The "True Book of Zi Ping" states: «格局者, 八字之精髓也» "The format of the map is the quintessence of the Eight Characters." In other words, without understanding the format, you do not understand the chart at all—you are merely skimming the surface.

Ziping School distinguishes two major classes of formats:

• Normal formats (Regular Pattern, Zheng Ge) — those where the principle of balance operates. This accounts for 90–95% of all BaZi charts.
• Special Formats (Bian Ge / Te Bie Ge) — where the principle of balance does not apply. These account for only 5–10% of charts and require a completely different reading methodology.

Special note: format is not about "better or worse." A special-format chart can be brilliant (in which case it signifies great wealth or power) and tragic (if the structure is broken). It all depends on how purely the format is realized and what luck pillars arrive.

2 Normal Format (Zheng Ge) — Balancing

In a normal format, the Day Master possesses sufficient inherent strengthto "withstand" opposing elements. For example, if your Day Master is Jia (Yang Wood) and the chart contains Water (Mother), Fire (Output), Earth (Wealth), and Metal (Control)—this is a balanced chart, a normal format.

In a standard format, the analyst's primary task is to find Yong Shen, which restores the missing balance:

• If the Day Master is strong, it requires an element that "drains" it (Output, Wealth, or Officer).
• If the Day Master is weak, it requires an element that "supports" it (its Mother or a friendly Companion star).
• If the chart is "hot," Water is needed. If it is "cold," Fire is required (this is already... Tiao Hou, climatic balance).

This is indeed the classic methodology: Bring the chart to climatic balance (tiáo hòu).When balance is achieved, life flows smoothly, success arrives, and health remains robust. The normal format is a "fair" chart: the more effort you put into balancing it, the better your life becomes.

3 A special format where the rules are different.

Now imagine a chart where... The Day Master is so weak.This has no support—neither from the "Mother" nor the "Brother." For example, a Jia (Wood) born in the Metal season (Autumn), without Water or Wood in the chart, surrounded by Fire, Earth, and Metal. The Wood is "felled" and cannot recover.

What happens if we try to apply the standard methodology? We would say: "The Day Master is weak; it needs Water and Wood." But if Wood arrives in the Luck Pillar, it appears in an environment dominated by Metal—and Metal will instantly cut it down. A weak assistant in a foreign land is death, not aid..

The classics have discovered: in such situations, the chart works in reverse. If the Day Master surrenders to the dominant element, And following it comes harmony. At that point, the element that "destroys" the Day Master becomes the Useful God (yòng shén), while the element that "supports" it turns into the Unfavorable God (jì shén).

This is indeed a special format: The "all or nothing" principle.Either the Day Master is strong and struggles against it, or he completely surrenders and merges with the dominant element.

4 Cong Wang Ge (Cóng Wàng Gé — Following the Prosperous Pattern) — a BaZi structure where the Day Master is extremely strong and follows its own energy, aligning with the Useful God to maximize potential.

The first major class of special formats is— Cong Wang (From Prosperity), "following the prosperity". This is a case where The Day Master's element itself is absolutely dominant. In the chart, there is not a single element that could restrict it.

For example, if Jia (Wood) is born in spring (the season of Wood), and the chart already contains several trunks and branches of Wood, plus Water that nourishes the Wood, with no Metal or dry Earth present, then Wood fills the entire chart.

In such a situation, it is futile to attempt to "control" Wood—there is simply too much of it. The chart will instead "follow the prosperity" of its own element. At that point, the following become Useful Gods (yòng shén):

• Water (Mother) — nourishes the dominant element.
• Wood (Self-generated) — supports dominance.
• Fire (exit) — gently releases excess.

And the Unfavorable Gods (jì shén — Unfavorable God):

• Metal — attempts to cut, but the chart is too strong, and Metal itself will be destroyed by a rebound.
• Earth — provides roots for Metal and attempts to "bind" the Wood.

Cong Wang Ge are cards for strong, bright, and dominant individuals. They often become leaders in their field, cannot tolerate objections, push forward relentlessly, and win precisely because they do not try to "please everyone."

5 Cong Ruo Ge 從弱格 — Following the Weak

Opposite class — Cong Ruo (Cóng ruò), "following the weak". Here, the Day Master is so weak and exhausted that instead of struggling, it surrenders to the dominant element.

Cong Ruo is divided into four subtypes depending on which specific element dominates. Each type has its own "personality" and destiny:

In the Cong Ruo Ge (Cong Weak Structure), the Useful God (yòng shén — Useful God) becomes the element that supports the Day Master (rì zhǔ — Day Master). Dominant Element and everything that supports it. The Unfavorable God (jì shén — Unfavorable God) is the native element of the Day Master and its "mother," which attempt to "revive" the doomed Day Master, thereby breaking the structure.

6 Hua Qi Ge (Huà Qì Gé) — Transformation via Stem Fusion

In BaZi, there are five pairs of Heavenly Stem combinations (Tian Gan He, 天干合):

• Jia + Ji → Earth (Jia + Ji → Earth)
• Yi + Geng → Metal (I + Geng → Metal)
• Bing + Xin → Water (Bing + Xin → Water)
• Ding + Ren → Wood (Ding + Ren → Wood)
• Wu (戊) + Gui (癸) → Fire (Yin Wood + Gui Water → Fire)

In a standard chart, such a combination is merely an attraction between two Heavenly Stems, nothing more. However, when specific conditions are met (the combining partner stands adjacent to the Day Master, there is a "root" in the Earthly Branches for the transformed element, and the season supports it)— The Day Master is effectively reborn into a new element..

For example, Jia (Wood), positioned next to Ji (Earth) and supported by the Earth season (the final month of the season: Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei), may transform into Earth. From this point onward, this chart is read as an Earth chart rather than a Wood one. The useful and unfavorable elements change completely.

Hua Qi Ge (Huā Qí Gé — Canopy Star) is a very rare and beautiful formation. According to classical statistics, purely realized Hua Qi occurs in only 1-2 charts out of 100. These are the charts of exceptionally gifted individuals, often with an unusual destiny and non-standard thinking.

7 Signs of a special format

How to recognize a special BaZi chart versus a normal one? The classics highlight several key indicators. If these conditions are met... All at once. This is a special format. If even one is violated, it becomes a normal format that is read classically.

Signs of following the weak (Cong Ruo): The Day Master is extremely weak and has no Root, yet it does not choose a Useful God to support itself; instead, it aligns with the strongest element in the chart, even if that element is detrimental.

1. The Day Master lacks a "root." In the branches of the chart. That is, there is not a single branch containing an element identical to or supporting the Day Master.
2. The Day Master lacks a Resource Star (印星 — yìn xīng). On the stems — there is no element that nourishes it.
3. The dominant element (wealth, output, or control) is represented everywhere. on the trunks and branches, in several places.
4. The birth season supports the dominant element. or at least does not contradict it.
5. There is no "Savior" (jiù huán — Rescuer). —the element that could revitalize the Day Master and disrupt its structure.

Signs of Cong Wang (following the prosperous): This concept refers to a BaZi chart where the Day Master aligns with and supports the dominant Useful God, indicating that one's life path is in harmony with their most favorable energy. When the configuration allows the Useful God to flourish without obstruction from Unfavorable Gods or excessive clashes, it manifests as success, growth, and alignment with destiny.

1. The Day Master's element dominates. — literally fills the chart.
2. There is no controlling element (Xing). dominant element (or it exists but is very weak and without root).
3. The birth season supports the Day Master.
4. The Resource Star (Yìn xīng — Resource Star), representing the Mother element, is present.

Signs of Hua Qi (Transformation)

1. The Day Master stands right next to its "partner" in combination. (on the Month or Hour pillar stem).
2. There is a "root" for the transformed element within the Earthly Branches.
3. The birth season supports the transformed element.
4. There is no "Enemy of Transformation." —the element that would destroy the new energy.

8 What changes in the reading of the BaZi chart?

When you determine that you are facing a special format, Almost everything in reading the BaZi chart flips to its opposite.This is the most dangerous spot for a beginner consultant: attempting to read a special chart using normal rules leads to a series of "backwards" predictions.

What changes specifically:

• Useful God (yòng shén — 用神) — now this is the dominant element and its companions, not the balancing one.

9 Especially auspicious and inauspicious special formats

Among special formats, there are "pure" and "impure" types. A pure format occurs when all conditions are met perfectly: the dominant element faces no obstacles, and the luck pillars continue to support it. Pure Special Format is one of the most magnificent destinies in BaZi.

Successful special formats

• Pure Wealth (Cong Cai) With a long cycle of Wealth in the Luck Pillars, this chart belongs to a great entrepreneur and billionaire.
• Pure Cong Sha With supporting pillars of Authority — a chart for a statesman, general, or corporate president.
• Pure Cong Er With a long Fire in the pillars — this is the chart of a great artist, writer, or inventor.
• Pure Canopy Star (Hua Gai) with support from the transformed element—a chart of an exceptionally gifted, unconventional individual.

Unsuccessful (broken) special formats

• Cong Ge with a "Relic" Day Master When the Day Master's root in the chart is weak, it hinders progress, causing the person to constantly oscillate between two worlds.
• BaZi with luck pillars of the "Useful God" (yòng shén — Useful God) When the pillar that revives the Day Master arrives in middle age, the structure collapses. These are often catastrophic periods—bankruptcy, divorce, illness.
• Hua Qi with a destroyed transformation When an external factor (another trunk) interferes with the combination, causing the transformation to "not fully complete." The person lives "between two elements," unable to fully realize themselves.

10 How to determine and avoid mistakes

Determining the format is the most critical moment in BaZi analysis. To avoid errors, the classics propose a strict sequence of steps:

Step 1. Assess the Strength of the Day Master (日主 rì zhǔ).

First, assess the strength of the Day Master using the "Five Pillars Method": birth season, root branches, supporting stems, opposing stems, and overall balance. If the Day Master has Even if there is at least one strong root in the branches. This is already almost not Cong Ge.

Step 2. Check the Dominant Element

Calculate which element truly dominates in the chart. Consider not only quantity but also quality: the monthly branch counts as 3, the seasonal branch counts as 2, and hidden stems count as 1.

Step 4. Check the Luck Pillars (Da Yun).

Step 5. Cross-Reference with Life

The most reliable verification is to ask the client. If a person is already an adult, their actual life destiny will reveal how the chart is interpreted. A special format yields a vivid, non-linear destiny: either great success or significant setbacks.

Special formats represent the pinnacle of BaZi mastery. Canonical texts by Ziping and Joey Yap dedicate separate chapters to them for good reason: understanding these unique charts opens access to interpreting the most vivid destinies—those of individuals who do not fit within ordinary rules.
