In the BaZi system (八字), your Day Master (日主 (rì zhǔ — "master of the day")) is the heavenly stem in the day position of your birth chart. It is "you yourself," your nature, the center of the entire chart. If your Day Master is 甲 (Jiǎ, Yang Wood), then your nature is like a mighty oak reaching toward the sky: you are straightforward, ambitious, intolerant of restrictions, and you press forward even when circumstances are against you.
The classic 滴天髓 ("Drops of Heavenly Marrow") states: «甲木参天, 脱胎要火» — "Jiǎ Wood pierces the heavens; to emerge from the embryo it needs Fire." This phrase captures the entire essence of Jiǎ in a single sentence: boundless ambition plus a need for warmth and movement (Fire) to unlock its potential.
1 The Core Nature of Jiǎ
Picture an old oak standing in the middle of a field. It stands upright, bending before nothing, its roots driving deep into the earth while its crown reaches for the sun. It grows slowly but relentlessly. A Jiǎ person is exactly that oak in human form.
Key qualities:
Jiǎ is the first of the ten heavenly stems, and there is deep meaning in that. Jiǎ begins the cycle, opens the gate to the new. That is why Jiǎ people often become pioneers, founders, trailblazers. If something around them needs changing — Jiǎ will be the first to raise the flag.
2 Strengths and Weaknesses
Where the strength of Jiǎ shows itself
- Leadership. Jiǎ is not afraid to take responsibility. When the team is in crisis — Jiǎ steps forward first and says "we do it this way."
- Long-term vision. A tree grows over years, not overnight. Jiǎ thinks about results 5, 10, 20 years out, not chasing quick profit.
- Inner strength. Jiǎ withstands crises that break others. They have a "wooden" resilience — roots run deep.
- Integrity. Jiǎ rarely compromises their conscience. Their word is their bond. A Jiǎ business partner is reliable.
Weaknesses — where Jiǎ "breaks"
- Stubbornness. Jiǎ rarely changes their mind, even when they already see they are wrong. "I said so — so that's how it will be."
- Inflexibility. In fast-changing situations that call for maneuvering, Jiǎ loses out. They cannot "bend" to fit the moment.
- Directness that turns into harshness. Jiǎ can wound loved ones with words without meaning to. "I just told the truth" — but truth without empathy strikes painfully.
- Perfectionism and burnout. Jiǎ builds grand plans and works to the limit. Often pushes themselves to exhaustion.
- Difficult relationships with authority. Jiǎ poorly tolerates being commanded by those they do not respect. Conflicts with superiors are a recurring story.
3 Jiǎ and the Elements: Allies and Adversaries
To understand Jiǎ more deeply, you need to know how Yang Wood interacts with the five elements. This determines which people support you, which drain you, and what environment suits you.
Water (壬, 癸) is the "mother" of Jiǎ. It nourishes the roots, gives life. In people, this is parents (especially the mother), teachers, mentors, sages. A Jiǎ surrounded by "Water" people flourishes: gaining knowledge, support, and a clear path.
Fire (丙, 丁) is the expression of Jiǎ. Fire is what Jiǎ produces: ideas, projects, children. The combination of Wood + Fire produces a bright flame — this is "Mu Huo Tong Ming" (木火通明, "Wood-Fire Brilliance"), the classic combination of gifted teachers, orators, and charismatic leaders.
Wood (甲, 乙) is brothers and sisters, friends, competitors. With another Jiǎ — equality and a clash of ambitions. With Yi (Yin Wood, 乙) — a soft vine wraps around the oak and helps it.
Earth (戊, 己) is "wealth" for Jiǎ. Jiǎ controls Earth the way roots tear through soil. In life this is money, material resources, and for a man — the wife. It is good when there is enough Earth in the chart, but not too much — otherwise Jiǎ "gets stuck in the mud."
Metal (庚, 辛) is "control" for Jiǎ. Gēng (庚) is the axe that cuts the tree. This is authority, laws, discipline. In a man's life — children (especially sons); for a woman — the husband. Too much Metal without support = Jiǎ is felled.
4 The Career of Jiǎ — Where They Excel
Jiǎ is by nature a leader and a pioneer. They find it dull to sit in an office from 9 to 6 doing monotonous work. They need scale, vision, room for big decisions.
Ideal fields
- Education — teacher, professor, dean. Jiǎ loves passing on knowledge and shaping the next generation.
- Law and public service — judge, lawyer, legislator. Jiǎ values justice and principle.
- Publishing, journalism — where integrity and the pursuit of truth are in demand.
- Architecture and construction — literally "building things tall." Jiǎ sees large structures.
- Agriculture, ecology, forestry — where Wood is literally the theme.
- Politics — especially ideological, reformist politics. Jiǎ can become the leader of a movement.
- Entrepreneurship — company founder, not top manager. Jiǎ works poorly "for someone else" — but builds their own venture brilliantly.
What to avoid
- Corporate environments with rigid hierarchy and micromanagement — Jiǎ will suffocate.
- Work requiring flexibility and compromise every day (cold sales, petty diplomacy) — Jiǎ wears out.
- Routine physical labor with no prospects for growth.
- Fields where you must please the client against your conscience (e.g., loan-sharking, deceiving consumers).

In love, Jiǎ is the "protector and guide." Not the most tender or the most passionate, but reliable, faithful, solid. Jiǎ rarely cheats: for them, infidelity is a violation of principle they will not commit without serious cause.
What Jiǎ looks for in a partner
- Support, not a challenge. Jiǎ tires of constant conflict. They need a "Water" partner who nourishes.
- Respect for their principles. Mocking Jiǎ's values = the end of the relationship.
- Independence. Jiǎ dislikes "clingers." A partner must have their own life, goals, and friends.
- Readiness for a long relationship. Jiǎ builds for years. One-night flings are not their story.
Ideal partners by Day Master
Partners best avoided
- Too much Metal — will "cut" Jiǎ, with constant criticism and pressure.
- A dominant Gēng (庚, Yang Metal) — a couple in constant struggle for leadership. One of you will break.
- Excessively "earthy" partners — will "keep Jiǎ in the mud," dragging them down into trivialities.
6 The Health of Jiǎ
In Chinese medicine, each element is linked to specific organs. Wood governs the liver and gallbladder, as well as the tendons, muscles, eyes, and the emotion of anger.
Vulnerable areas of Jiǎ
- Liver and gallbladder — the most common problem. Alcohol, stress, and overwork strike exactly here.
- Eyesight — especially with excessive screen work or strong stress.
- Tendons and muscles — strains, tendinitis, especially in athletic Jiǎ.
- Headaches and migraines — often linked to liver tension and suppressed anger.
- Emotional burnout — Jiǎ constantly "pushes themselves forward" and forgets to rest.
Recommendations
- Regularly cleanse the liver: less alcohol, more bitter herbs (dandelion, milk thistle).
- At least 7–8 hours of sleep — Jiǎ loses productivity catastrophically without sleep.
- Walks in the forest, in nature — your "own" element provides restoration.
- Working with anger — meditation, yoga, psychotherapy. Suppressed anger strikes the liver.
- Green foods — spinach, parsley, cilantro — help the "Wood."
7 Money and Financial Strategy
In BaZi, for Jiǎ, Earth = money. Strong Jiǎ Wood "controls" Earth the way roots tear through soil. This means Jiǎ is naturally able to earn money — but does not always know how to hold onto it.
Money patterns of Jiǎ
- Earns through large projects, not small deals. Jiǎ is the "million-dollar contract," not the "thousand-dollar sale."
- Best of all — their own business or high-ticket freelancing. Jiǎ works poorly for a salary.
- Tends to invest in real estate (Earth = money, real estate = "accumulated" earth). This is their natural strategy.
- Danger: overestimating their own strength. Jiǎ takes on too much — and burns out.
- Income is cyclical. Jiǎ has "big harvests" and "winters." A financial cushion is essential.
8 Luck Pillars (大運) — The Life Cycles of Jiǎ
In BaZi, every 10 years brings a new "luck pillar" (Da Yun, 大運), coloring life with a particular element. For Jiǎ, the best cycles are:
- Water cycles (Rén, Guǐ) — education, growth, expansion. Often during these years Jiǎ receives breakthrough learning or meets a mentor.
- Fire cycles (Bǐng, Dīng) — fame, recognition, the monetization of talents. Jiǎ in a Fire cycle often becomes well-known in their field.
And the dangerous cycles:
- Metal cycles (Gēng, Xīn) — pressure, restrictions, conflicts with authority. Liver health at risk.
- Cycles of excessive Earth — financial success, but the risk of getting bogged down in a "swamp" and losing vision.

9 Jiǎ in the Modern World
The classical descriptions of Jiǎ were written in an era when "success" meant a government career or spiritual leadership. In the 21st century, Jiǎ adapts:
- Startups — Jiǎ often become founders of technology companies (Elon Musk, Steve Jobs — both display "Wood" traits).
- YouTube, blogs, media — the modern "channel" for the Jiǎ preacher. Integrity + Fire = viral content.
- Activism — Jiǎ often becomes the face of movements (environmental, human rights). Principles and visibility are their element.
- Coaching, mentorship, teaching — Jiǎ "passes on knowledge," the way a tree bears fruit.
10 What to Do Right Now If You Are Jiǎ
- Learn your full chart — Day Master Jiǎ is only 1/8 of the picture. The elements, luck pillars, and the 10 gods of the chart all play a role.
- Find your Yong Shen (useful element). For most Jiǎ it is Fire and/or Water. Surround yourself with these elements.
- Do not suppress anger — it strikes the liver and your health.
- Work on flexibility — this is your main growth skill. A Jiǎ who learns to compromise without losing their core becomes a genius.
- Build for the long term — your tree does not grow in a month. Do not expect quick results; reach for greatness over 5, 10, 20 years.
- Find "your water" — a mentor, partner, environment that nourishes you. Without water, a tree withers — and so does Jiǎ without support.
