You entered your date of birth, got your chart — and you're looking at a set of characters, elements and percentages. What do you do with all of this? In this article we'll break down the structure of a BaZi chart step by step: from the overall layout to the specific questions it answers.

The BaZi system (八字, literally "eight signs") is based on the idea that the moment of your birth — year, month, day and hour — is encoded in eight characters. Four pairs, four pillars, eight signs. That's where the name comes from.

Step 1: The four pillars — the framework of the chart

Each pillar consists of two signs: the heavenly stem (天干) on top and the earthly branch (地支) below. The four pillars are the four moments in time of your birth:

Hour
Inner world, children, the subconscious
Day ★
Yourself, your spouse, the core of your personality
Month
Career, parents, social role
Year
Ancestors, society, the external context
The main pillar is the Day. The upper sign of the day pillar is your Day Master (日主 (rì zhǔ — "master of the day")). It defines your inner nature. Everything else in the chart is interpreted in relation to it.

Step 2: The heavenly stems — visible energy

The heavenly stems (天干, tiān gān) are the upper signs of each pillar. There are ten in total, two for each element:

The heavenly stems are visible energy. They are seen at once, act directly and define the core character of each pillar. The day stem is your Day Master. The month stem shows the dominant element of your birth season. The year stem is the external context of your generation.

Step 3: The earthly branches — hidden depth

The earthly branches (地支, dì zhī) are the lower signs of the pillars. There are twelve of them, and each corresponds to one of the animals of the Chinese zodiac:

子 (Rat) · 丑 (Ox) · 寅 (Tiger) · 卯 (Rabbit) · 辰 (Dragon) · 巳 (Snake) · 午 (Horse) · 未 (Goat) · 申 (Monkey) · 酉 (Rooster) · 戌 (Dog) · 亥 (Pig)

But unlike the stems, each branch contains hidden stems within itself — from one to three. This creates layers of meaning: the visible element of a branch may differ from what is hidden inside.

Example: The branch 寅 (Tiger) is Wood. But hidden inside it are the stems 甲 (Yang Wood), 丙 (Yang Fire) and 戊 (Yang Earth). Three elements in one branch! This is precisely why analyzing a chart is a multilayered process.

Step 4: Determining the balance of elements

Look at all eight signs of the chart (plus the hidden stems) and tally up how much energy falls to each element. In our service this is done automatically — you'll see the percentage breakdown of the five elements.

There is no such thing as a perfect balance — every person has their own unique configuration. But understanding what you have in excess and what you lack gives you the key to interpretation:

Step 5: Finding the Day Master and its strength

Your Day Master is the heavenly stem of your day of birth. It is the center of the chart, your "self." The first question of analysis: how strong is it?

The Day Master is considered strong if:

The Day Master is considered weak if it is surrounded by many controlling or draining elements with little support.

The strength of the Day Master determines which elements are favorable for you: a strong one needs elements that spend its energy, a weak one needs elements that support it.

Step 6: The Ten Gods — the roles of the elements

Each element in the chart plays a particular role in relation to your Day Master. These roles are called the Ten Gods (十神):

Step 7: Luck Pillars — what lies ahead

Besides the natal chart (which is fixed forever), every person passes through a series of Luck Pillars (大运) — 10-year periods that overlay the chart and shift the balance of elements.

The Luck Pillars are calculated from the month pillar. They show which elements will dominate in each period of your life. A favorable pillar is one that brings the elements you need. An unfavorable one is one that aggravates the imbalance.

Where to start right now

If you've just received your chart, here is a minimal plan for your first analysis:

  1. Find the Day Master — the upper sign of the Day pillar. Read what it means.
  2. Look at the balance of elements — what's in excess, what's lacking.
  3. Identify your birth season — which month it is and which element dominates it.
  4. Study your current Luck Pillar — which elements are influencing you right now.
  5. Ask the Oracle a question — a specific question about career, relationships or health.
Don't try to understand everything at once. The BaZi system has many layers — from the basic elements to the subtle interactions between branches. Start with the Day Master and the balance, and the rest will come with practice.
