In the BaZi (八字) system, a day is not merely a neutral container of time. Each date carries its own energy—its specific Heavenly Stem (天干 — Heaven Stems) and Earthly Branch (地支 — Earthly Branches), its elemental nature, and its relationships with human charts. Choosing an auspicious date means finding a day whose energy harmonizes with the charts of both spouses and strengthens their union, rather than undermining it.
1 Why choose a wedding date according to BaZi?
The tradition of selecting an auspicious day for a wedding is one of the oldest in China. Even before the BaZi system took its modern form, families consulted calendar masters to verify the marriage date. This was not considered superstition but rather care: marriage is the foundation of the lineage, and beginning it on a day of "clash" between elements meant laying a crack into the foundation.
The logic is simple and elegant. The wedding day serves as the "zero point" of a new shared destiny. The energy of this day imprints itself upon the union. A favorable day (吉日 jī rì — auspicious day) provides the couple with a tailwind: ease in the early years, support from the elements, and an absence of sharp conflicts. An unfavorable day introduces unnecessary resistance—minor quarrels, difficulties in adjustment, and external pressure.
2 What is considered: the BaZi charts of both partners and their yòng shén (Useful Gods).
Professional wedding date selection begins not with a calendar, but with two BaZi charts—the bride's and the groom's. The master constructs both charts and identifies each person's key parameter: their Day Master (rì zhǔ / rì yuán — Day Master). Useful God (yòng shén).
用神 This is the element that balances a person's BaZi chart and brings them luck. For one person, it is Water (水 shuǐ), for another, Fire (火 huǒ), and for a third, Wood (木 mù). An ideal wedding date supports Useful Elements of Both Spouses (用神 — Useful God) simultaneously.
If the Day Master's element matches... 用神 For both parties is a rare fortune. More often, a compromise day is sought: one that helps one party and at least does not harm the other.
3 Avoid clashes (chōng) between dates and the newlyweds' BaZi charts.
The strictest rule of 择日 (zé rì — Date Selection) is... Avoid the clash 冲 (chōng — "clash"). between the Day Branch and the spouse chart's key branches. Clash (chōng) is a direct conflict between two opposite Earthly Branches that "shatters" energy.
The Six Classical Earthly Branch Clashes:
- Rat (Zi, 子) ↔ Horse (Wu, 午)
- 🐂 Ox (Chou, 丑) ↔ 🐐 Goat (Wei, 未)
- 🐅 Tiger (Yin, Yin) ↔ 🐒 Monkey (Shen, Shen)
- Rabbit (Mao) ↔ Rooster (You)
- Dragon (Chen) ↔ Dog (Xu)
- Snake (巳 sì) ↔ Pig (亥 hài)
If the branch of the chosen day clashes with the Earthly Branch of the bride or groom's Day Pillar, this is an unfavorable omen. The Day Pillar in the chart symbolizes the individual themselves and their spouse; therefore, a 冲 (chōng — Clash) on the Earthly Branch of the wedding day is considered particularly undesirable.
4 Avoid days that clash with the animal pair's Earthly Branch.
Besides the Day Pillar, the following are also checked: Year of Birth Animal (生肖 shēng xiào — "Birth Sign", Year Animal) each spouse. The day whose Earthly Branch clashes (chōng) with the zodiac sign of the groom or bride is excluded from the list of candidates.
For example, if the bride was born in the Year of the Horse (午 wǔ), days under the Rat sign (子 zǐ) are unsuitable for her wedding, as the Rat and Horse are in direct clash. If the groom is a Dragon (辰 chén), days under the Dog sign (戌 xū) must be excluded.
Additionally, "punishments" (刑 xíng) are taken into account. Punishment (xíng — "punishment") and "Harm" (hài) Harm (hài — "harm") Between the branches lie subtler forms of disharmony, which the master also cross-references with both charts.

Select a wedding date based on two BaZi cards5 Favorable Elements for the Day Master in a Union
Once the "dangerous" days are filtered out, positive selection begins. Among the remaining dates, those whose elements actively... support Marriage. Here, constructive interactions among the branches are at work:
- 🌸 Liu He (liù hé — "Six Harmonies"): Paired combinations of Earthly Branches symbolizing attraction and harmony. A Day Master whose branch forms a Six Harmonies (liù hé) combination with the spouse's day branch adds "bonding" energy to the marriage;
- 🔺 San He (sān hé — "Triple Alliance"): If the Day Branch enters one of the Triple Combinations along with the Spouse signs, this forms a powerful harmonizing combination.
- 🌿 Support for the Useful God (yòng shén): The Day Master Heavenly Stem, carrying the Useful God of both, enhances their luck in marriage.
The ideal wedding date is one where the day branch simultaneously avoids all clashes and forms a combination (hé — "alliance, harmony") with at least one of the spouses, while the element of the day serves as their Useful God (yòng shén).
6 Days of Destruction to Avoid
In the Chinese calendar, there is a category of "destructive" days that are excluded for any important endeavors, including weddings:
They also avoid "Void Days" (kōng wáng — Void and Extinction), days of the "Four Destructions," and other unfavorable calendar markers. In the traditional almanac (Tong Shu — Universal Book/calendar), such days are specially marked, and the master checks against them as an additional filter on top of the chart analysis.
7 Seasonal and Annual Considerations: Avoid the Bride's Bing Ming Year (Běng Míng Nián — Oath of Marriage Year).
Date selection proceeds from top to bottom: first the year, then the month, then the day, and finally the hour. At the level of the year, there is an important rule—whenever possible, do not schedule a wedding on... Ben Ming Nian (běn míng nián — "Year of One's Destiny") brides.
本命年 This is the year whose animal sign matches the person's birth year (occurring once every 12 years). Traditionally, it is considered turbulent, the year of "conflict with Tai Sui" (tài suì — Year Lord/Jupiter). Classical schools generally try to avoid or carefully compensate for a wedding during one's own Ben Ming Nian by selecting an auspicious month and day.
The season is also considered through the elements: if both spouses require the Fire element (火, huǒ), summer months provide background support; if Water (水, shuǐ) is needed, winter months do so. The seasonal element of the month acts as a "background" for the day master's energy.
8 The time of the ceremony is also important.
In BaZi, a day is divided into twelve two-hour segments (时辰 shí chén — "Hour Watch"), each governed by its own Earthly Branch. The hour of marriage registration or the main ceremony serves as the "Hour Pillar" of the event and is selected according to the same rules applied to the day.
- ⏰ The Hour should not Clash (冲) with the Spouse Branch of the Day Master.
- It is auspicious if the Hour Branch forms a Combination (合) with the Wedding Day Branch, as this "seals" harmony.
- ☀️ Ideally, the elemental nature of the hour should also support the Useful God (yòng shén) pairings.
For example, a ceremony during the Dragon hour (Chen, ~07:00–09:00) with the Monkey day stem-branch (Shen) and Rat sign (Zi) for the bride forms Shen-Zi-Chen—a Water Triple Combination, which is extremely auspicious for a "Water" couple.
9 Myths: "Beautiful Date" vs. Truly Favorable Date
The most common mistake is choosing a date based on the aesthetics of numbers: "20.02.2026, how beautiful!", "we want 08.08, eights mean luck". In the Gregorian calendar, these numbers carry no BaZi energy whatsoever: the system operates according to the Chinese solar-lunar calendar and Heavenly Stems with Earthly Branches, not Arabic numerals.
This does not mean that a beautiful date is necessarily bad—sometimes it accidentally turns out to be favorable. However, relying on numbers instead of analyzing the charts is like choosing medicine based solely on the beauty of its packaging.
