In the BaZi (八字) system, the Day Master (日主 (rì zhǔ — "master of the day")) is the heavenly stem on the day position of the birth chart, "you yourself." If your Day Master is 庚 (Geng, Yang Metal), then your nature is the sword, the axe, the raw ore. Heavy, strong, cutting metal — the kind that fells timber, smelts weapons, builds empires. This is the most "martial" of all the ten heavenly stems.
The 滴天髓 classic says: "庚金带煞, 刚健为最" — "Geng Metal carries a killing force; its hardness and toughness are supreme." This line conveys the essence of Geng without adornment: this is combat force, direct, without sentiment, without looking back. Not the refined blade of a jeweler — but the heavy sword of a warrior or the axe that fells a forest.
1 The basic nature of Geng — a sword forged for battle
To understand Geng, picture a rough piece of iron in the forge. Heavy, coarse, cold. It has none of the beauty of jeweler's gold — but within it lies enormous strength. Heat it and forge it, and you get a sword, an axe, a bridge support, a rail. Geng is the raw material for the large, the durable, the working. Without Geng, empires are not built, clearings are not cut in the forest, bridges are not raised.
A Geng person is such a metal in human form. He is direct, hard, sharp. He does not skirt the truth, does not "package" the unpleasant in pretty words. He says it as it is. He acts decisively. He does not "feel subtly" — he acts, and then thinks. This is the quality that makes Geng an excellent warrior, entrepreneur, reformer — and at the same time difficult in everyday life.
The main qualities of Geng:
Geng is the seventh of the ten heavenly stems, the start of the "metal" half of the cycle. This is the harvest, autumn, the time to cut wood and lay in stores. That is why Geng people are often connected with "cutting away the excess": reformers, restructurers, turnaround managers — those who come in and "cut to the quick" so that the body of the system survives.
Another important trait of Geng: the need for "fire" — that is, for processing. Raw ore is coarse, useless. To become a sword it needs the smith's fire. Geng without life's trials, without learning, without "processing" is an "unhewn" person — coarse, unpleasant. Geng that has passed through the fire is a hero, a leader, a master. Most of the outstanding Geng in history are people who have come through great ordeals.
2 Strengths and weaknesses
Geng's strength — what he does better than others
- The capacity for hard decisions. To fire, to shut down, to break off, to cut away — Geng does what others put off for years. This sometimes saves companies, families, countries.
- Leadership through strength. Geng leads not by charisma (like Bing), but by authority and competence. People follow him because they are sure: he will not let them down in battle.
- Physical and psychological endurance. Geng withstands athletic, military, work loads that break others. He can work at his limit for months.
- Protecting his own. If someone is Geng's "own," he stands by them like a wall. He will not abandon them in a fight or in trouble. Loyalty to loved ones is absolute.
- Direct insight. Geng sees the essence quickly, without "detours." He often solves a problem in a minute where others ponder for hours.
- Discipline. Geng knows how to "push himself" — regimens, training, rules. Army-style self-organization comes naturally to him.
- Not afraid of conflict. For Geng, conflict is a normal part of life. He does not panic, does not retreat into resentment — he resolves it.
- Effectiveness under pressure. The higher the stakes, the better Geng works. Stress does not paralyze him; it mobilizes him.
Weaknesses — where Geng breaks and breaks others
- Bluntness. The main social weakness. Geng often wounds loved ones with words without meaning to. "I just told the truth" — but truth without gentleness strikes hard.
- Inflexibility. The sword does not bend. In complex situations where one must maneuver, Geng loses to the "subtle" Day Masters.
- Impulsive aggression. Geng can flare up, say too much, strike (with words or deeds). Afterward he regrets it — but the word has been said.
- "Black-and-white" thinking. Either enemy or friend; either truth or lie. Geng often does not see the halftones and the complexity.
- Contempt for the "weak". Geng has trouble understanding depression, anxiety, emotional sensitivity. "Pull yourself together and go" is a typical reaction that wounds loved ones.
- Difficulties in relationships. The directness that works in war often destroys in love.
- Emotional closedness. Geng does not know how to talk about feelings; he stores them inside.
- Injuries and addictions. Geng often has dangerous habits: alcohol, extreme sports, overload. He does not take care of his body.
- Professional deformation. Geng in security structures or in tough business can "harden" and lose the ability to be soft even with those closest to him.
3 Geng and the elements: who it befriends, who it fights
Yang Metal has its own chemistry with the elements. Understanding these connections is critical for Geng: he easily becomes "coarse" if the right elements are not nearby.
Earth (戊, 己) is the "mother" of Geng. Ore is born from the earth. In people this is parents, mentors, roots. The Wu mountain (戊) is a firm foundation; the Ji field (己) is soft support. Geng without Earth becomes "uprooted" — it loses its connection to its roots and turns into aimless aggression.
Metal (庚, 辛) is brothers, comrades, brothers-in-arms. With another Geng — a powerful union of warriors, but also the risk of a clash. With Xin (辛, jeweler's metal) — a complement: one works "on a large scale," the other "finely."
Water (壬, 癸) is the "expression" of Geng. Metal gives birth to water — Geng "releases" his strength into thoughts, ideas, strategies. Ren (壬, the ocean) is large-scale thinking; Gui (癸, streams) is fine analysis. For a Geng woman — children. Without Water, Geng "stagnates" in raw force and does not develop the intellect.
Wood (甲, 乙) is the "wealth" of Geng. The sword cuts wood — Geng "earns" by cutting through opportunities. Jia (甲, the great tree) is big business, large-scale projects; Yi (乙, the vine) is small, flexible sources of income. For a Geng man — the wife.
Fire (丙, 丁) is the "control" of Geng. Fire melts metal, turning ore into a tool. This is authority, laws, discipline — and above all, upbringing and processing. Without Fire, Geng remains "raw ore." For a Geng woman, Fire is the husband. Ding (丁, the candle) is soft, precise processing; Bing (丙, the sun) is large-scale "tempering."
4 Geng's career — where he is at his best
Geng is a combat profile. His strength must find an outlet. If Geng "sits in an office at a quiet job," he either starts destroying those around him or destroys himself (alcohol, extreme sports, aggression). Geng absolutely needs a "blade" aimed at the right target.
Ideal fields
- Military affairs, security structures — a direct hit. The army, police, special services, security. Geng in uniform is in his place.
- Surgery — literally "working with a scalpel." Especially hard surgery: military, traumatology, neurosurgery.
- Crisis management and business restructuring — Geng comes into a dying company, cuts away the inefficient, saves the living.
- Heavy industry — metallurgy, machine building, oil and gas, mining. The literal metal.
- Construction and engineering — especially of large objects: bridges, roads, infrastructure.
- Entrepreneurship in "tough" sectors — logistics, construction, wholesale trade.
- Law — especially criminal and arbitration law. A Geng lawyer is not afraid to strike.
- Sport and coaching — especially combat disciplines, martial arts, strength sports.
- Transport and logistics — aviation, the navy, freight. Fields that demand precision and decisiveness.
- Professional "snipers" of any field: negotiators, turnaround lawyers, auditors.
- Technology — especially DevOps, information security, low-level programming — where precise "engineering" is required.
What to avoid
- Fields demanding constant compromises of principle — Geng will explode.
- Social media as a primary job, show business, fashion — fields too "soft," where Geng is "tiresome."
- Psychotherapy, subtle counseling, emotional support — not his profile.
- Diplomacy in delicate negotiations — Geng will "blurt out" everything straight to your face.
- Creative fields requiring constant play and ambiguity.
- Working "in the shadow" of a boss without recognition — Geng will leave within a year.

In love, Geng is a difficult partner. Devoted, reliable, protective — but inflexible, blunt, sometimes coarse. Geng loves "practically": not with words, but with deeds. Often this is not enough for partners, and distance arises.
What Geng gives a partner
- Protection in the most literal sense. Financial, physical, social. With Geng you are not afraid.
- Loyalty. Geng does not cheat "as the occasion arises." If he has chosen, it is serious and for the long haul.
- Decisiveness in crises. When things are bad, Geng acts, does not panic, does not sink into depression.
- Financial stability. Geng usually earns quite well.
- Clarity and predictability. With Geng you know where you stand. He does not play manipulation games.
What Geng does NOT know how to do (and why partners suffer)
- Subtle emotional support. "Pull yourself together and go" is the typical reaction instead of "hug me and listen."
- Romance and beautiful gestures. Geng does not write poems, does not arrange surprises. He considers this "empty nonsense."
- Acknowledging feelings. Geng rarely says "I love you." He thinks it is obvious anyway.
- Care with words. He will say straight out what another would soften. The partner often cries "for no reason" — and the reason is a careless phrase.
- Accepting the partner's weakness. If the partner is depressed or anxious, Geng does not understand and gets irritated.
Love in a male Geng chart
For a Geng man, wife = Wood. Yang Jia (甲) is a strong, principled, "oaken" woman, often with her own career. Yi (乙) is a flexible, more feminine partner, sometimes "winding around like a vine." Geng men are often drawn to the Jia type: they need equal opponents, not "soft dolls." Therein lies both the strength and the danger: two strong characters can live together for decades or fall apart within a year.
The Geng man's danger is to wear out his wife with directness. Constant criticism, an absence of warm words, an "army" style of communication — this kills love over the years. The lesson: learn to speak gently, even when the truth is harsh. The words "thank you" and "I'm sorry" are the two hardest skills for a Geng man.
Another pattern: "finding someone to protect." A Geng man often chooses a woman "in trouble" — he rescues, provides, protects. This works as long as there is "trouble." When life settles down, the relationship loses its meaning, and Geng looks for a new "mission."
Love in a female Geng chart
For a Geng woman, husband = Fire. Bing (丙, the sun) is a bright, charismatic, leaderly man — public, visible, sometimes "starry." Ding (丁, the candle) is a soft, emotional, spiritual man. Geng women often find themselves in a difficult dilemma: they themselves are stronger than many men, and they need either a very strong (but not overbearing) partner, or a soft one who is nonetheless able to "process" them (as a smith processes metal).
A Geng woman's particularity: she is often incompatible with the traditional "feminine" role. Direct, strong, sometimes "masculine," she does not fit the stereotype of the homemaker wife. Many Geng women marry late or build a career instead of a family. This is a normal scenario — but it requires a partner who respects that strength.
The Geng woman's danger is to "devour" a weaker man. If she marries someone infantile, weak, insecure, she will "cut him down" with words over the years, and both will be unhappy. The lesson: choose a truly strong partner, not a "potentially strong one who needs motivating."
Ideal partners by Day Master
Partners best avoided
- Weak, emotionally unstable partners — Geng does not understand them, and they suffer from his directness.
- Manipulators — Geng will see through them, but will tire.
- Another strong Geng without the right processing — constant struggle, a clash of swords.
- Too "soft" Ding or Ji without a clear structure — Geng may "crush" them.
6 Geng's health
In Chinese medicine Metal governs the lungs and the large intestine, as well as the skin, the nose, and the emotion of sorrow/grief (in excess — depression, in suppressed form).
Geng's vulnerable areas
- The lungs and respiratory system — the main zone. Bronchitis, pneumonia, and in mature age — a risk of serious lung diseases. A smoking Geng is playing with fire (literally).
- The large intestine — constipation, colitis, a risk of tumor processes. Geng "stores" in the intestine what he does not express emotionally.
- The skin — psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis. Especially under stress.
- Musculoskeletal injuries — Geng does extreme sports, does not take care of himself, gets into accidents.
- The cardiovascular system — hypertension from inner pressure, a risk of strokes after 50 for those who "store up anger."
- Alcohol and addictions — a frequent Geng problem. He "releases the tension" with a bottle.
- Suppressed depression — Geng rarely goes to a psychologist, hides his "weakness," which leads to serious crises.
- Surgical interventions — Geng has a higher probability of operations than the other Day Masters.
Health recommendations
- Protect the lungs: quit smoking, regular check-ups, breathing practices.
- Control alcohol — for Geng it becomes a "comfort." That is a dangerous road.
- Regular bowel check-ups after 40 — a must.
- Sport is essential, but WITHOUT extreme and without overload. Injuries make themselves felt for the rest of life.
- Psychotherapy — yes, it is needed. This is not "weakness," it is prevention of suppressed depression.
- Learn to cry. It sounds strange, but the emotion of grief must come out. Suppressed, it turns into diseases of the lungs and intestines.
- A warm environment — loved ones who can "soften" your hardness.
- Regular rest — without it Geng "hardens" in wear and tear.
7 Money and financial strategy
In BaZi, for Geng Wood = money. The sword cuts wood — Geng earns through "direct work," "cutting through" opportunities. This produces a characteristic financial style.
Geng's money patterns
- Earns a lot and directly. Not "round about," but head-on: business, contracts, large-format sales.
- Works well in "tough" niches — where others cannot withstand the pressure.
- Spends "big" — cars, real estate, weapons, tools, gadgets. Not on trifles.
- Impulsive large purchases — he can buy an expensive car in a single day "because it's needed."
- Dislikes "counting kopecks" — leaves that to the accountant or the wife.
- Money through action, not through waiting. Geng will not "save up for retirement," he will keep working.
- Risks and investments — Geng is inclined toward active, sometimes risky investments. Sometimes he wins, sometimes he loses.
8 Luck pillars (大運) — the life cycles of Geng
Every 10 years brings a new "luck pillar" (Da Yun, 大運). Geng passes through cycles decisively — each decade either "forges" or "rusts."
Favorable cycles
- Fire cycles (Bing 丙, Ding 丁) — "processing," learning, the forming of character, spiritual growth. These are often cycles of a career breakthrough.
- Earth cycles (Wu 戊, Ji 己) — stabilization, roots, support, education, the appearance of mentors.
- Wood cycles (Jia 甲, Yi 乙) in the right position — a financial breakthrough, large deals, business expansion.
- Cycles of moderate Water — creative and intellectual expression, successful children, wisdom.
Dangerous cycles
- Cycles of excessive Fire without support — "over-smelting," physical exhaustion, conflicts with authorities, heart-health problems.
- Cycles of excessive Metal — "too many swords in one room": conflicts, aggression, physical injuries.
- Cycles of excessive Water without Earth — loss of strength, dispersion, loss of direction.
- Wood cycles in an unfavorable position — financial losses, for a man — conflicts with the wife, divorce.

9 Geng in the modern world
Classical descriptions of Geng painted generals, brigands, blacksmiths, butchers — people of action and force. In the 21st century Geng adapts to new forms — but the nature remains:
- Tech founders of "hard" products — infrastructure, security, defense, fintech.
- Crisis managers and restructurers — those called in to save sinking companies. A big market.
- Private security, cybersecurity — the modern "military" sector.
- Surgeon-bloggers, athletes, military experts in the media — Geng with a public platform.
- Major investors in the "real sector" — real estate, industry, resources.
- Coaches of extreme disciplines — martial arts, survival, special-forces training.
- Authors of books and courses on discipline, productivity, strength — modern "military philosophy" for civilians.
- Lawyers in high-profile court cases — where what is needed is not diplomacy, but the force of the blow.
10 What to do right now if you are Geng
- Learn your full chart. The Geng Day Master is 1/8 of the information. It is especially important to see whether there is Fire ("processing") and whether there is too much of it.
- Find your Yong Shen. For most Geng this is Fire (especially Ding) and/or Water. Surround yourself with people who can "process" you without breaking you.
- Learn care with words. This is the hardest skill. Before you speak — a pause. Ask: "is this truth needed right now?"
- Find the "right blade". A career or a calling where your strength works for good rather than destroying loved ones.
- Protect your lungs and intestines. Regular check-ups, no smoking, an active life without extremes.
- Go to a psychologist, do not consider it weakness. This is the practice you need most — you are bad at talking about feelings.
- Learn to accept the weakness of others. Depression, anxiety — these are not "laziness." Loved ones need your warmth, not criticism.
- Control alcohol. This is your main addiction.
- Financial discipline. A cushion, insurance, a plan. Not "by inspiration."
- Develop your "water" — intellect and strategy. Reading, learning, chess, analytics. Without water, Geng remains "raw ore."

When the rotten must be cut away, the sinking saved, the weak defended, the forest felled and the bridges built — what is needed are people who know how to act without excessive reflection. That is you. Without Geng there would be no civilizations, no armies, no hospitals with surgeons, no large companies and no heroes. This is the profession of strength — and it is always needed.
The great Geng of history were generals, reformers, master smiths, founders of empires. They are people whose hands were heavy and whose words were sharp — but without them history would be poorer.
