In the BaZi (八字) system, your Day Master (日主 (rì zhǔ — "master of the day")) is the heavenly stem on the day position of the birth chart, reflecting the very essence of your personality. If your Day Master is 辛 (Xin, Yin Metal), then your nature is like a cut gemstone or a piece of jewelry. You are not the rough steel of a sword, not an axe or a hammer — you are a refined object prized for the fineness of its craftsmanship, the purity of its lines and its shine.
The 滴天髓 classic says: "辛金軟弱, 溫潤而清" — "Xin Metal is soft and weak, warm, moist and pure." This phrase is paradoxical: Xin is called a metal, yet it needs water for its shine and warmth so as not to become brittle. A jewel must not be cold — it is admired in the warm hands of its owner. And so it is with a Xin person: outwardly he seems cold and composed, but inside he craves warmth, recognition and a loving environment.
1 The basic nature of Xin
Picture a diamond ring in the window of a jewelry boutique. In itself it is useless — you cannot use it as a tool, you cannot boil a kettle with it. But look at the price: thousands of dollars per gram. Why? Because its value lies not in usefulness, but in the perfection of form, purity, rarity. In exactly the same way, the value of a Xin person lies not in the quantity of work produced, but in the quality, elegance and uniqueness of what he does.
The main qualities of Xin:
Xin is the eighth of the ten heavenly stems, the feminine (yin) aspect of the Metal element. Unlike its "brother" Geng (庚, Yang Metal — axe, sword, weapon), Xin is the result of processing: metal that has passed through fire, forging and polishing to become something beautiful. That is why Xin people are often aesthetes, connoisseurs of art, jewelers, designers — those who work with delicate forms.
2 Strengths and weaknesses
Xin's strength — how it manifests
- A sharp mind and keen observation. Xin notices the details and nuances that others miss. An excellent analyst, critic, expert.
- Aesthetic taste. A sense of harmony, color, proportion — at the level of inner intuition. Xin does not need to be taught "what is beautiful" — he feels it from childhood.
- Precision of speech. Xin is able to formulate in two words what would take another a whole paragraph. A born editor and copywriter.
- Resilience under external pressure. Despite his "yin" (soft) nature, Xin has an inner core. He will not break if someone leans on him crudely — rather, he will withdraw and strike back elegantly.
- A capacity for self-development. Xin loves to "polish" himself — to learn, to improve, to hone his craft.
Weaknesses — where Xin "dims"
- Perfectionism that paralyzes action. Xin is ready to redo a project endlessly, and in the end never launches it at all. The principle "the best is the enemy of the good" is about Xin.
- Arrogance and snobbery. Seeing the imperfections of the world, Xin tends to look down on it. This shuts out many people and opportunities.
- Touchiness. A gemstone is easily scratched. Xin remembers rudeness, mockery, neglect for a long time. He rarely forgives.
- Hidden envy. Xin wants to be the best, but often feels that less "elegant" people overtake him in the race. This breeds a quiet bitterness.
- A tendency toward manipulation. He dislikes confronting head-on, but knows how to "strike elegantly" — through sarcasm, irony, a jab.
- A weakness for compliments and recognition. Xin needs external confirmation of his worth. Without an audience, a jewel loses its meaning.
3 Xin and the elements: who it befriends, who it fights
To understand Xin more deeply, you need to know how Yin Metal interacts with the five elements. This determines which people strengthen you, which drain you, and which environment is best for you.
Water (壬, 癸) is Xin's most important ally. It is the outlet for Yin Metal — that which the metal produces. Water polishes, washes the jewel, makes it shine. This is a favorite combination in BaZi: "Jin Shui Xiang Han" (金水相涵, "Metal and Water shine upon each other"). A strong Xin with water is an intelligent, charismatic, elegant person with a gift for words. In life this is the environment where Xin can express his intellect: intellectual work, teaching, writing.
Earth (戊, 己) is the "mother" of Xin. Earth gives birth to Metal (ores form in the depths of the earth). But for Xin, the Earth must be clean: dirty, wet earth does not give birth to a precious metal, it hides it. In people — this is parents, teachers, supportive mentors.
Metal (庚, 辛) is brothers and sisters, peers, friends. With Geng (庚, Yang Metal), Xin has a complicated relationship: Geng is coarse and direct, whereas Xin is refined. Such a pairing often clashes.
Wood (甲, 乙) is the "wealth" of Xin. Metal cuts Wood, so controlling Wood brings Xin money. Especially favorable is Yin Wood (乙) — a soft vine, flowers — which is something Xin can "cut and set" into beauty.
Fire (丙, 丁) is the greatest danger for Xin. Fire melts metal. But there is a nuance: for Geng (rough steel) the Ding fire (a candle) is useful — it tempers the sword. For Xin (a piece of jewelry), however, fire is destructive — the jewel melts and loses its form. Fire in a Xin chart is pressure, authority, obligations, crises.
4 Xin's career — where he is at his best
Xin is by nature a refined specialist prized for the quality and aesthetics of his work. Rough physical labor, routine, low-skilled work are not his territory. Xin needs fields where precision, taste, elegance, mastery are valued.
Ideal fields
- Jewelry-making — literally in Xin's nature. A gem-cutter, a jewelry designer, an appraiser of precious stones.
- Fashion, style, design — fashion designer, stylist, interior designer, graphic designer. Where a sense of proportion and aesthetics is needed.
- Surgery and precision medicine — cardiac surgeon, neurosurgeon, dentist, ophthalmologist, cosmetologist. A sharp instrument in skilled hands = Xin in its nature.
- Literature, poetry, journalism — Xin as a master of words, of precise phrasing. A superb editor.
- Art and culture — art critic, gallery curator, antiquarian, restorer.
- Law — especially high-level advocacy, where verbal precision decides the outcome. A tax or corporate lawyer.
- Finance and appraisal — banker, investment analyst, asset appraiser, auditor.
- Perfumery, winemaking, fine-grained industries — where the senses and nuances are at work.
- Music — especially classical, performance. A violinist, a pianist.
What to avoid
- Heavy physical labor — Xin cannot stand coarseness and dirt.
- Fields requiring "head-on selling" without aesthetics — cold sales, low-level marketing.
- Working with aggressive clients or in a team with crude communication.
- Routine professions without creativity — Xin will wither.
- Environments with no recognition and no feedback — without an audience Xin fades.

In love, Xin is a jewel choosing its setting. Xin does not rush headlong into a romance; he observes for a long time, evaluates, weighs. Xin's love must be earned — but once he has chosen, he gives a deep, devoted attachment with an almost poetic tenderness.
What Xin seeks in a partner
- Aesthetics. The partner must be pleasant to the eye. Not necessarily a beauty — but neat, tasteful, with a sense of style.
- Intelligence and subtlety. A coarse interlocutor kills Xin's interest instantly. He needs a partner capable of conversation about books, art, ideas.
- Recognition. Xin craves compliments and appreciation. A partner who knows how to say warm words will be loved forever.
- Social standing. Not necessarily wealth, but "class," education, respect in society. Xin will not choose a "country bumpkin," even one with a kind heart.
- Respect for personal space. Xin needs time alone — without it he goes dull.
The Xin man in relationships
The Xin man is an aesthete and intellectual, sometimes perceived as a "cold dandy." He is gallant, remembers dates, gives tastefully chosen gifts. But he is not a "mountain of protection" like Jia or Bing: he will not shield you from danger with his chest. His strength lies elsewhere — in the ability to create around his beloved woman an atmosphere of beauty, culture, refinement. A Xin man's wife will live in a beautiful home, with a thoughtfully designed interior, attending exhibitions and concerts. His frequent weakness is flirting with others: his "yin" nature loves recognition, and compliments from other women turn his head.
The Xin woman in relationships
The Xin woman is the classic "lady": well-groomed, tastefully dressed, eloquent. She is drawn to men with great inner fire (Bing, Ding) — she seeks the strength that will "cut and set" her. But therein lies the paradox: too much Fire melts the Metal. A Xin woman often suffers in relationships with an authoritarian man: at first his dominance attracts her, and later she suffocates under his control. The ideal for her is a man of gentle strength who values her mind and leaves space for self-expression.
Ideal partners by Day Master
Partners best avoided
- Geng (庚) — Yang Metal. Brute strength and elegance do not get along. This is a pair of brother and sister, not lovers.
- An overly strong Ding (丁) — a constant emotional "melting" of Xin. Conflicts, jealousy.
- Excessively "earthy" partners (overly practical, prosaic) — Xin will suffocate in a domestic life without aesthetics.
6 Xin's health
In Chinese medicine, each element is connected to organs. Metal governs the lungs and the large intestine, as well as the skin, the nose, the immune system, and the emotion of sorrow/melancholy.
Xin's vulnerable areas
- The lungs and bronchi — asthma, allergies, frequent respiratory infections, a tendency toward smoking (which is destructive for Xin).
- The skin — eczema, dermatitis, acne, sensitivity. Xin's skin is often thin and reactive.
- The large intestine — constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, especially against a background of stress.
- The nose and sinuses — sinusitis, rhinitis, loss of the sense of smell.
- The teeth — Xin often has enamel problems and requires regular care.
- Depression and anxiety — yin metal is prone to melancholy, especially in autumn (the season of Metal).
- Autoimmune diseases — the lungs and intestines are linked to immunity, and Xin often reacts in exactly this way.
Recommendations
- Breathing practices (Qigong, pranayama) — for the lungs.
- A humid indoor microclimate (humidifiers) — especially in autumn and winter.
- Herbal teas: ginger, mint, eucalyptus, licorice root — for the lungs.
- A minimum of sugar and dairy — they provoke mucus in the lungs and intestines.
- Regular walks in fresh air — but not in smog and dust, to which Xin is sensitive.
- Working with the emotion of sorrow: not suppressing it, but expressing it through art, journaling, conversations.
- Less time in air-conditioned offices — cold, dry air parches Xin.
7 Money and financial strategy
In BaZi, for Xin Wood = money. Especially favorable is Yin Wood (乙) — this is "floral wealth," beautiful assets, aesthetic objects. Xin has a complicated relationship with money: he knows how to earn it through mastery, but dislikes "dirty" money and does not like to haggle.
Xin's money patterns
- Earns through mastery and reputation, not through volume and quantity. One expensive client = a month of work.
- The premium segment is his territory. As a Xin, do not try to compete in the cheap mass segment — there you will be torn apart.
- Money from a mentor or an investor-partner — a frequent story. Someone "sets" the jewel of Xin.
- A tendency toward luxury — spends on clothing, jewelry, art, travel. He does not like to save "just because."
- Danger: overestimating his demand in hard times. When the economy falls, the premium segment contracts first.
- Good investments for Xin — antiques, art, jewelry (literally), premium-class real estate.
8 Luck pillars (大運) — the life cycles of Xin
Every 10 years of life in BaZi is a new "luck pillar" (Da Yun, 大運), coloring the period with a particular element. For Xin, the best cycles are:
- Water cycles (Ren, Gui) — the flowering of intellectual and creative potential. Books, degrees, fame through words or art. Often in these years Xin gets published, defends dissertations, gains recognition.
- Earth cycles (Chen, and the Wu-stems 戊, 己 when clean) — stability, support from elders, the chance to learn from masters.
And the dangerous cycles:
- Cycles of strong Fire (especially Ding combined with the Wu-Xu in summer) — health crises, the pressure of authorities, burnout. Especially dangerous for the lungs and heart.
- Cycles of excessive Wood without Fire — financial temptations, an overestimation of one's possibilities, the risk of debt.
- Geng cycles (Yang Metal) — competition, conflict with "coarse" partners, the risk of losing one's uniqueness through merging with the mass.

9 Xin in the modern world
The era of mass production and copies is not the friendliest to Xin. When everything is the same, stamped out, cheap — the jewel is lost in a pile of costume jewelry. But that is precisely why the modern Xin has a unique chance: in a world of sameness, individuality is valued more than ever.
- A personal brand — Xin's main instrument in the 21st century. Instagram aesthetes, authors of blogs with a fine style, expert YouTubers of narrow niches — all of these are Xin.
- Craft entrepreneurship — mini-ateliers, designer jewelry, made-to-order craft. Etsy, marketplaces in the premium niche.
- The expert industry — a premium-class psychologist, a business consultant, a high-level life coach, a medical expert. Xin sells his vision and precision.
- Art director, creative director — Xin as the one in charge of aesthetics on the team.
- Digital graphics, web design, UX/UI — the modern "jeweler's art of pixels."
- A teacher of fine craft — calligraphy, watercolor, the tea ceremony, winemaking, perfumery. Xin teaches not the mass-produced, but depth.
10 What to do right now if you are Xin
- Learn your full chart — the Xin Day Master is only 1/8 of the information. The elements of the month, the luck pillars, the Ten Gods of the chart — all of this shapes the scenario.
- Find your Yong Shen (useful element). For most Xin this is Water and Earth. Surround yourself with these elements — blue and black shades in clothing, a humid microclimate, clean food, wise mentors.
- Fight your perfectionism. Launch at "70% ready" instead of "100% perfect, but in a year." Five published books are better than one "perfect" one left in a drawer.
- Learn to accept criticism. Remember: a scratch on a diamond is not a catastrophe — it can be polished out. Do not break from every remark.
- Take up a gratitude practice. Xin tends to see the imperfections of the world — that is the road to depression. Shift your focus to the beauty that is already there.
- Invest in your personal brand and reputation. Your value grows with the fame of the quality of your work. Do not stay silent in a corner — step into the light.
- Protect your lungs. Quit smoking if you smoke. Humid air, a clean environment, breathing practices — this is your medicine.
- Find your "setting" — a mentor, an agent, a business partner who knows how to show your beauty to the world. Without a setting, a jewel lies in the dark.
