If Wood grows, Fire burns, Earth holds, and Water flows — then Metal cuts, separates, limits. It is the element of completion, form, discipline. Metal turns an amorphous mass into a clear outline; it turns thought into word, desire into decision, idea into product. Without Metal, the world would be an eternal blur.
The classic 滴天髓 says: «金實無聲, 金完不鳴» — "Solid metal is soundless, whole metal does not ring." A bell sounds only when it has a cavity. A sword cuts only if it has a thin edge. Metal shows its strength not through mass, but through precision. This is its deepest secret.
1 What the Metal element is
Metal in BaZi is the principle of separation, form and truth. It is that which cuts away the superfluous. A sculptor takes marble and removes everything that "is not the statue" — that is the work of Metal. A surgeon removes a tumor — Metal. A judge separates the right from the guilty — Metal. An editor strikes out the unnecessary word — again, Metal.
In the Heavenly Stems, Metal is represented by two symbols, and they are radically different:
- 庚 (Geng, Yang Metal) — this is raw steel, the axe, the sword, the bronze bell. Rough, powerful, straightforward. It is the force that chops.
- 辛 (Xin, Yin Metal) — this is jewelry metal: gold, silver, precious stones, pure platinum. Refined, polished, valuable. It is brilliance and precision.
In the Earthly Branches, Metal is manifest in two positions:
- 申 (Shen, Monkey) — Yang Metal, the start of autumn, the moment of harvest and of cutting away the old.
- 酉 (You, Rooster) — Yin Metal, the peak of autumn, pure sound, absolute form.
Metal also "hides" in Xu (戌) and Chou (丑) as one of the hidden stems, but these are not its "home" positions — there it is only a guest.
2 How the Metal element forms
To understand how strong Metal is in a particular chart, you must take several factors into account — not just the presence of 庚, 辛, 申, 酉 in the characters.
Season of birth
Metal "receives power" in the autumn months:
- Shen (申, August) — Metal is "born."
- You (酉, September) — Metal "thrives" (旺).
- Xu (戌, October) — Metal "fades", passing into Earth.
If your Day Master is Metal and you were born in autumn, your Metal is "rooted" (得令). If you were born at another time, Metal is weaker and needs support.
Earth gives birth to Metal
The basic rule of Wu Xing: «土生金» — Earth gives birth to Metal. Ore veins lie within the earth. Without Earth, Metal does not come into being.
This means that the presence in a chart of 戊, 己 or Earth branches (especially Chou 丑 and Xu 戌, which are called the "earth storehouses of Metal") strongly supports Metal.
Combinations and transformations
- 乙庚 合化金 — Yi (Yin Wood) and Geng (Yang Metal) under certain conditions merge into Metal.
- 巳酉丑 三合 (sān hé — "triple unions")金局 — the triple union of Si–You–Chou forms a "local metal body", even if the chart has only two of the three branches.
- 申酉戌 三會西方金 — the triple gathering of the western direction strengthens Metal to the maximum.
An experienced BaZi master always assesses Metal in the context of the whole chart: even a single Geng in a stem can be "stronger" than three signs if it is supported by the season, Earth, and combinations.
3 The character of a person with dominant Metal
A person with strong Metal is a distinct psychotype, instantly recognizable in life. If Earth "holds", then Metal "divides and cuts away."
Strengths: discipline, organization, clarity of thought, the ability to see structure in chaos, a fine sense of aesthetics, the charisma of the direct word, leadership through authority rather than emotion. Metal people are the best administrators, analysts, military officers, doctors, lawyers. They "hold the form."
The dark side: sharpness, coldness, a tendency to judge, perfectionism, rigidity, emotional stinginess, an inability to forgive, pride. A metal person can wound with a word without realizing they said something harsh — for them, it is simply "the truth."
The difference between 庚 (Geng) and 辛 (Xin)
庚 Geng — the axe, the sword, unhewn steel. Direct, rough, powerful. Often large, physically strong. A military psychotype, a leader "of the army mold." Strength in mass and onslaught. Stands on no ceremony. Loves sport, weapons, machinery.
辛 Xin — precious metal, a piece of jewelry. Refined, aesthetic, valuing beauty and quality. Often handsome, well-groomed. Subtle perception, loves the expensive and the rare. Strength in brilliance and rarity. Can be creative: designers, jewelers, perfumers, musicians (especially brass and bell sounds).
4 Careers of the Metal element
Metal is separation, form, authority, precision, the cutting instrument. These qualities determine the fields in which a metal person realizes themselves most fully.
Ideal industries
- Military service, security forces, security work — literally "a weapon in hand." Metal here unfolds fully.
- Surgery, dentistry, orthopedics — cutting instruments, precision. A surgeon with strong Metal is a true calling.
- Law, prosecution, judging — separating the guilty from the innocent, clear norms, the execution of the law.
- Mechanical engineering, metallurgy, engineering — direct work with metal and precise mechanisms.
- IT, cybersecurity, audit — the modern form of the "guardian of boundaries" and the "separator of signal from noise."
- Financial analysis, accounting, audit — Metal loves numbers and precise reporting.
- Investigative journalism, analytics — the cutting word, the search for truth.
- Music — especially brass wind instruments, operatic vocals, percussion. Any music where precision and resonance matter.
- Jewelry work, watchmaking — ideal for Xin.
- Perfumery, high fashion — Yin Metal (Xin) often shines here.
- Elite sport, especially disciplinary kinds (shooting, fencing, martial arts).
- Teaching disciplines with a clear structure — mathematics, physics, law.
- Technical copywriting, editing, proofreading — cutting away the superfluous in text.
What is better to avoid
- Fields requiring constant emotional softness (kindergarten, hospice care) — a metal person either burns out, or their hardness traumatizes the vulnerable.
- Chaotic creative industries without structure (some types of startups, improvisational theaters).
- Charm-based social sales — Metal "won't smile if it doesn't see the need."
5 Illnesses of the Metal element — organs and symptoms
In Chinese medicine, Metal governs the lungs (肺) and the large intestine (大腸), as well as the skin, the body hair, the nose, and the emotion of grief / mourning (悲 / 憂).
Vulnerable organs and systems
- Lungs — asthma, chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, obstructive diseases, COPD. Smokers with strong Metal take a double hit.
- Large intestine — constipation, diverticulosis, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, a tendency toward polyps.
- Nose and sinuses — chronic sinusitis, maxillary sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, a deviated nasal septum.
- Larynx and vocal cords — laryngitis, voice loss from overstrain, nodules on the cords.
- Skin — psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, eczema, acne, dryness, early wrinkles, hypotrophy (thin "parchment" skin). Skin and lungs in Chinese medicine are considered a "paired system."
- Hair — loss, brittleness, early graying.
- Immunity — the general "defensive Qi" of the lungs (衛氣) is weakened. Frequent colds, allergies, autoimmune processes.
- Skeleton, especially the collarbones and ribs — fractures, osteoporosis at an early age.
- Psycho-emotional sphere — protracted sadness, depression with "stuck grief", an inability to let go of the dead or the departed, post-traumatic stress with fixation.
Specific disease scenarios
- "Dry Metal" (excess Metal + Fire) — asthma, eczema, constant respiratory infections, early graying.
- "Blunt Metal" (Metal without Fire for shaping) — stagnation in the intestine, cystic acne, emotional closure with depression.
- "Over-chopped Metal" (excess Fire against Metal) — acute lung inflammation, burns, serious surgical pathologies.
- "Flooded Metal" (excess Water) — constant colds, bronchitis with abundant phlegm, edema, scant defensive Qi.
- "Buried Metal" (excess Earth) — deafness, voice loss, encapsulated processes (cysts, fibroadenomas), a feeling of "I can't breathe."
6 Colors, directions, form, taste of Metal
To work consciously with Metal — strengthening it when deficient or restraining it when in excess — you need to know its correspondences.
Colors
- White, silver, metallic — the main ones.
- Gray in all shades — from light to anthracite.
- Platinum, pale gold, champagne.
- Any cool shades with a metallic sheen.
Directions
- West — the main direction of Metal, especially for You (酉).
- Northwest — for Shen (申) and Xu (戌).
- In home feng shui: a metal person's study is best located on the western or northwestern side.
Form and materials
- Form — the circle, the arch, the dome, the sphere, the oval. Also the straight line and sharp angles.
- Materials — steel, brass, bronze, copper, silver, gold, glass, mirrors, crystal.
- Architecture — buildings with domes, towers with round elements, metal structures, glass-and-steel facades.
Taste and aroma
- Taste — pungent, spicy, sharp. Ginger, garlic, onion, pepper, mustard, horseradish, wasabi. These foods "open the lungs" and nourish Metal in moderate doses.
- Aroma — sharp, spicy, frankincense, myrrh, cedar, pine, eucalyptus, juniper. The smoke of burning resins. The scent of leather.
Time
- Season — autumn, especially from August to October. The time of harvest, pruning, preparation for winter.
- Hour — 15:00–19:00 (Shen and You). By the circadian clock — 3:00–5:00 (the hour of the lungs) and 5:00–7:00 (the hour of the large intestine).
- Age of life — maturity, 55–70 years, the time of "shaping experience."
7 Metal's relationships with the other elements
Earth → Metal (generation). Earth is the mother of Metal. Without it, there is no ore. In life, Earth for a metal person is the parents (especially the mother), mentors, resources for development, education.
Metal → Water (generation). Metal melts and flows. In Chinese thought, "metal gives birth to water" means that a sharp mind and precise words give birth to deep thoughts (Water — wisdom). For a metal person, Water is their children, their creativity, expression, the flow of ideas.
Metal → Wood (control). The axe chops the tree. For a metal person, Wood is their "wealth", money, material resources; for a Metal man — the wife. Sharp Metal knows how to "cut" profit from projects, to "process" opportunities efficiently.
Fire → Metal (control). Fire melts Metal. This is "the authorities", pressure, restrictions; for a Metal woman — the husband. In moderate doses, Fire is beneficial: «金多得火, 方成器皿» — "much Metal with Fire becomes a vessel." That is, Fire "shapes" Metal, makes a sword out of raw steel. But too much Fire — and Metal is melted, having lost its form.
Wood exhausts Metal — chopping hard wood blunts the blade. If a chart has too much Wood against weak Metal, the person "wastes their strength in vain", getting no return.
8 An overweight of Metal — when there is too much of the element
Signs of overweight in a chart
- 3 or more Metal stems or branches.
- Birth in an autumn month (Shen, You) with additional Earth support.
- Several Earth branches feeding Metal (especially Chou and Xu — the "storehouses of Metal").
- The absence or weakness of Fire that could "shape" Metal.
Manifestations in character
- Hardness turning to cruelty. The person judges others without compassion, seeing only "right" and "wrong."
- Emotional closure. Does not express feelings, considers them a weakness.
- Conflict-proneness. Ready to go into open confrontation over any pretext. "I am more correct."
- Paralyzing perfectionism. Cannot begin the work, because it is "not perfect enough."
- Self-criticism and self-torment. The sword turned on its own bearer.
- A tendency toward melancholy and protracted sadness. "Something is wrong, but never perfect."
- Loneliness. Partners leave, friendships don't form — it hurts to be near such Metal.
Life scenarios
- A career "overseer" hated by the whole team, but too feared to be fired.
- A surgeon whom patients trust but dread.
- A partner who constantly criticizes, sincerely believing it is "help."
- An athlete who drives themselves with injuries to the end of their career.
- A financial analyst, precise with figures but destructive in relationships.
9 A lack of Metal — when there is little or none
Signs in a chart
- Not a single Metal stem or branch.
- A Metal branch suppressed by combinations (You absorbed by a Chen–You combination, Shen bound with Si).
- Strong Fire fully melting weak Metal.
- Strong Wood against weak Metal (a revolt against the blade).
Manifestations in character
- Unprincipledness, blurred boundaries. "Agrees with everyone in turn", has no firm "no."
- Chaos, disorganization. Lateness, forgetfulness, absent-mindedness.
- Difficulty with discipline. Cannot carry a task to the end, abandons it at 80%.
- Weak immunity and a tendency toward colds. The "defensive Qi" of the lungs is weak from childhood.
- Problems with financial structure. Money comes, but without accounting; debts mount unnoticed.
- An inability to let go. A paradox: Metal is the symbol of letting go (like a fallen leaf in autumn), but it is precisely with a lack of Metal that people cannot let go — of grievances, the past, people.
- Aesthetic indiscriminateness. Tastelessness in clothing, in speech, in affairs.
Life scenarios
- A talented specialist whom everyone around "exploits", because they cannot refuse.
- A partner who endures infidelity for years, because they are unable to "cut it off."
- An entrepreneur with no accounting, no contracts, no boundaries of responsibility.
- A person constantly ill with colds, allergies, with chronic bronchitis.
10 Balancing Metal — how to bring it into harmony
If there is too much Metal — it needs to be "softened"
The main "softeners" of Metal are Fire (melts and gives form) and Water (channels excess strength into a flow).
- Colors — red, orange, burgundy, warm tones. Plus blue and black — for Water.
- Direction — south (Fire) for shaping, north (Water) for expression.
- Lifestyle — more emotional expression: theater, music, dance, passionate hobbies. Therapy to work through suppressed anger and grief.
- Diet — bitter tastes (coffee, dark chocolate, chicory, bitter greens) — they nourish Fire, which softens Metal. Also — salty foods in moderation (they nourish Water).
- Psychology — the practice of emotional openness, tears, the expression of feelings. The "free writing" method, art therapy, body therapy.
- Relationships — choose partners with warm Fire in their charts (Bing, Ding, Si, Wu). They will "melt" the hardness and teach warmth.
- Physical activity — cardio, running, dance, anything that warms you up and makes you sweat.
If there is little Metal — it needs to be "forged"
- Colors — white, silver, gray, metallic. Also yellow and beige — for nourishing Earth.
- Direction — activate west and northwest in the apartment's feng shui (mirrors, metal decorative elements).
- Dwelling — more metal in the interior: steel elements, bronze, brass. Bells, gongs, singing bowls for sound.
- Diet — pungent spices (ginger, garlic, pepper), white food (rice, white fish, white meat, white fruits — pears), mountain herbs.
- Routine — a clear schedule, a disciplined morning routine, rituals.
- Breathing practices — pranayama, qigong, especially "lung-expanding" practices.
- Structure and order — decluttering, keeping lists, budgeting, contractual work.
- Training — strength work with proper form, martial arts, shooting, fencing — anything that develops precision and will.
- Aesthetics — learning to dress sharply, to hold your posture, to speak clearly.

- A morning breathing ritual — 10 minutes of conscious breathing at sunrise. The hour of the lungs is 3–5 AM, but the gentler 5–7 AM version works too.
- Sound therapy — singing bowls, gongs, Tibetan bells. Metal resonates with metal.
- Contact with nature in autumn — walks through the autumn forest, watching the leaves fall. This is a meditation on letting go.
- Ritual decluttering — once a season, give away or discard the unnecessary. Freeing up space.
- A writing practice — keeping a journal, separating the important from the secondary on paper.
In the BaZi system of the Joey Yap and Ziping schools, Metal is considered the "element of justice" (義) — one of the five classical virtues. Its strength lies not in quantity, but in the precision of its application. A master's sword is no heavier than a novice's — but it knows where to strike.
If Metal is strong in your chart, your task is to learn to distinguish where Metal should be a sword, where a scalpel, and where simply a bell whose sound spreads through the silence. If there is little Metal — learn first to build boundaries, discipline, clarity at least in small things, and Metal will come to you through the structure of your life.
Metal is dignity. It is the ability to hold the form when everything around dissolves. It is the skill of saying "no" so that the "no" sounds like an act of love, not a blow. It is the wisdom of autumn, which knows that the leaves must fall for the tree to survive the winter.
