Marriage is perhaps the foremost question of life that people bring to a BaZi master. "When will I get married?", "What will my husband be like?", "Why do all my relationships end badly?", "Should I marry this person?". In the classical tradition there are precise answers to these questions — because the birth chart holds within it the entire script of marital destiny. You only need to know how to read it.

姻緣
Yīn-Yuán · Marriage Bond
yīn yuán · marriage destiny · the fate of matrimony

In the classic treatise 滴天髓 it is said: «夫妻宫者, 日支也; 夫星妻星, 隱於四柱» — "The Spouse Palace is the Day Branch; the husband star and wife star are hidden within the four pillars." This short formula contains the entire system of reading marriage. Today we will examine it in full.

1 The Day of Birth — a Portrait of the Spouse (Day Branch = Spouse Palace)

The most important rule: the Day Branch (日支) is the "Spouse Palace" (夫妻宮 — fū qī gōng — "Spouse Palace"). It is the position your Day Master sits upon, and at the same time — the place where your partner is described. Whichever character stands there — that is your spouse.

Reading by Day Branch

Day BranchNature of the SpouseKey Trait
子 Zǐ (Rat)Clever, flexible, sociableLoves freedom, intellect, connections
丑 Chǒu (Ox)Reliable, persistent, traditionalFamily + stability above all
寅 Yín (Tiger)Ambitious, direct, a leaderCareer, authority, protector
卯 Mǎo (Rabbit)Aesthetic, diplomatic, gentleHarmony, culture, art
辰 Chén (Dragon)Commanding, charismatic, changeableGreat ambitions and emotional swings
巳 Sì (Snake)Intellectual, secretive, elegantDepth, discretion, strategy
午 Wǔ (Horse)Energetic, impulsive, passionateFreedom, travel, passion
未 Wèi (Goat)Caring, artistic, sensitiveFamily, art, kindness
申 Shēn (Monkey)Quick-witted, multitasking, ironicSharp mind, business, flexibility
酉 Yǒu (Rooster)Disciplined, precise, a perfectionistOrder, discipline, criticality
戌 Xū (Dog)Loyal, protective, persistentLoyalty, protection, principles
亥 Hài (Pig)Generous, dreamy, gentleGenerosity, dreams, emotions

This is the first and quickest way to describe a partner. For example, a woman with a Day Branch of Chén (Dragon) — her husband will be commanding, changeable, ambitious. A man with a Day Branch of Wèi (Goat) — his wife will be caring, artistic, sensitive.

💞Important: the Day Branch describes the "type of spouse," not their appearance or social status. You may meet a Western wife with a Day Branch of Chén — she will be a "Dragoness by character," even without Chinese roots. This is an archetype, not ethnography.

2 The Hidden Spouse — Wealth for a Man, Officer for a Woman

The second layer of reading is the spouse star, hidden within the concealed stems of the branches. Following the Joey Yap canon:

Where to Look for the "Spouse Star"

The spouse star may be visible:

  1. On the stems (openly) — the relationship is "transparent," the spouse is socially active.
  2. In the hidden stems of the branches — the relationship is "concealed," the spouse is either invisible to society, or arrives from an unexpected place.
  3. Only in the Day Branch — the strongest pattern, the spouse is "right in the focus of life."
  4. Not visible at all — difficult to find a spouse, late marriage, monasticism.

What if There Are Many Spouse Stars?

If a man's chart has many Wealth stars (riches/wives) or a woman's chart has many Officer stars (officers/husbands), this is a "multiple marriage." Possible outcomes:

What if There Is No Spouse Star?

If the chart entirely lacks Wealth (for a man) or Officer (for a woman), this is a "solitary chart." It does not mean "will never marry," but it indicates:

3 When Marriage Happens — Peach Blossom, Red Phoenix, Heavenly Joy

This is the most applied question: "when will I get married?". In BaZi there are several "marriage indicators" (神煞, Shen Sha) that signal the approach of a wedding.

桃花 (táo huā — "Peach Blossom") Peach Blossom

The "Peach Blossom" is the chief star of love. It is the branch that activates romance. The Peach Blossom is determined by the year of birth:

Year of Birth (branch)Peach Blossom
Yín, Wǔ, Xū (Fire)Mǎo (Rabbit)
Sì, Yǒu, Chǒu (Metal)Wǔ (Horse)
Shēn, Zǐ, Chén (Water)Yǒu (Rooster)
Hài, Mǎo, Wèi (Wood)Zǐ (Rat)

When the Peach Blossom arrives in a Da Yun or Liu Nian, this is a "year of romance." A high likelihood of meeting someone, becoming infatuated, falling in love. It does not always end in marriage — sometimes it is simply a vivid romance.

紅鸞 (hóng luán — "Red Phoenix") Red Phoenix

This is the strongest "marriage" Shen Sha. When the Red Phoenix is activated through a Da Yun or Liu Nian, this is a "wedding year." It is determined by the year of birth; the formula is more complex (you need a calculator), but the effect is clear.

天喜 (tiān xǐ — "Heavenly Joy") Heavenly Joy

The "star of happy events." Activation in a Da Yun/Liu Nian brings a wedding, the birth of a child, an engagement. It often works in tandem with the Red Phoenix.

Activation of the Day Branch

The most reliable signal is when a Da Yun or Liu Nian brings a branch that forms a Liu He or San He with the Day Branch. This is the "activation of the Spouse Palace." If the Peach Blossom or Red Phoenix is working in parallel — marriage is almost guaranteed.

Tip: if you want to know "your wedding year" — look at your Day Branch and check when its Liu He will arrive. That will be your period of meeting or marriage. Alternatively — the years of Peach Blossom/Red Phoenix activation.

4 Signs of a Happy Marriage

Not all marriages are alike. The chart shows exactly which kind awaits you. Signs of a harmonious marriage:

💚
A favorable spouse star
If Wealth (for a man) or Officer (for a woman) is your Yong Shen, marriage brings strength and luck.
🤝
Liu He with the Day Branch
If the Day Branch in the chart forms a "union" with another branch — this is a sign of a strong, peaceful marital attachment.
🕊
Absence of a Day Clash
If the Day Branch does not clash with other branches and no Clash arrives in the Da Yun — the union is stable.
🌸
A "healthy" spouse star
If Wealth/Officer is supported by other elements of the chart — the spouse will be a real figure, not a "shadow."

Additional Positive Signs

5 Signs of a Difficult Marriage

And now the alarming signals. If they are present, marriage is possible — but it will require serious work and awareness.

The Main "Red Flags"

  1. Clash on the Day Branch. In the native chart or activated in a Da Yun. A direct blow to the "Spouse Palace."
  2. The spouse star = your "killer" (Seven Killings or depletion). Marriage weakens you rather than strengthening you.
  3. Several Wealth / several Officer openly on the stems. Multiple marriages, affairs, romances.
  4. The spouse star is absent. Hard to find, late marriage, celibacy.
  5. Liu He of the Day Branch with an "enemy". Marriage binds you to a toxic person.
  6. A Punishment affecting the Day Branch. Hidden conflicts, betrayals, deceptions, legal disputes.
  7. A weak Day Master + an excessively strong spouse star. Suppression in marriage, loss of self.
  8. An excess of Peach Blossom (several Peach Blossom branches in the chart). Amorousness, an inability to choose one partner.
⚠ A combination of risk: Clash on the Day Branch + Punishment + a strong Wealth/Officer on someone else's stem = a high risk of divorce through betrayal or scandal. This calls for conscious work on the relationship even before the situation comes to a head.

6 Multiple Marriages in the Chart — How to Read Them

This is a delicate topic, but an important one. In BaZi the signs of "multiple marriages" are clearly visible. Acknowledging them is not a "verdict," but an opportunity to prepare.

Signs of Multiplicity

How to Work With This

  1. Accept the reality of the chart. Do not try to "hold on to" a marriage the chart shows to be temporary.
  2. Choose your first partner consciously. If the chart shows 2–3 marriages, the first is often a "learning" one — do not invest your entire life in it up to retirement.
  3. Know the "years of transition". When a Clash on the Day Branch arrives — prepare for changes.
  4. Do not let it reach a Punishment. If it is already clear the relationship has ended — part with dignity, without scandals and courts.
The chart shows the number of marriages, but not their quality. Quality is always your choice.

7 Compatibility of Two Charts

This is perhaps the most popular service offered by BaZi masters. The compatibility of two people is determined by combining their charts across several levels.

Level 1: Day Master

The most superficial — yet fundamental — layer. The partner's Day Master should be in a harmonious relationship with your Day Master:

Level 2: Day Branch (the Spouse Palace)

This is the key level. It is ideal if the Day Branches of two people form a Liu He. For example, he has Zǐ, she has Chǒu — Zǐ-Chǒu Liu He. This is a "marriage of the palaces."

It is good if the Day Branches belong to a single San He. For example, he has Shēn, she has Chén — both are in Shēn-Zǐ-Chén.

It is bad if the Day Branches form a Clash or a Punishment. This is a "built-in conflict" between them.

Level 3: Yong Shen and Elements

The partner brings the element you need. If they are strong Fire and you need Fire — excellent. If they are Metal and Metal is harmful to you — difficult.

Level 4: Beneficial Stars

It is good when the partner's chart contains stars that support your Day Branch. Especially valuable are: Tian Yi (天乙, the Nobleman), Tian Xi (天喜, joy), Yue De (月德, virtue).

8 Divorces — a Clash of the Spouse Palace

Divorce in the chart is always a Clash or Punishment of the Day Branch. There is no such thing as a divorce "out of nowhere" — it is always visible in the chart.

Types of "Divorce" Patterns

How to Minimize the Risk

  1. Late marriage — if there is a risk of divorce in the chart, a late marriage (after 30–35) often fares better: the person is already more mature.
  2. A partner with a "holding" chart — if the partner has a branch in their Day Branch that forms a Liu He with yours, this softens the Clash.
  3. Know the year of activation — prepare in advance: therapy, communication, travel together, relocation.
  4. Avoid the mistakes of Punishment — do not allow it to reach betrayals, secrets, manipulations. The more "honest" the marriage, the less Punishment.

9 What to Do if the Chart Is Unfavorable

Suppose you looked at the chart and found "bad" signs: a Clash on the Day Branch, multiple Wealth/Officer, the absence of a spouse star. What should you do?

1. Stop Panicking

The chart is a script, not a verdict. Even the "worst" charts have been lived with dignity by many people. Knowledge is the first step toward adaptation.

2. Accept "Your Style" of Marriage

If the chart shows an "unconventional" marriage (late, after 40), do not force yourself at 25. If it shows several marriages — do not invest everything in the first. If it shows a "marriage of partnership, not passion" — do not wait for passion, value the partnership.

3. Work With Weak Stars

If the spouse star is weak — surround yourself with people of that element. If a man's Wealth is weak, and it is Earth — more connection with "earthy" people (stable, calm, predictable). This "summons" the spouse into your energetic field.

4. Use Favorable Years

If the chart reveals specific years of activation of the marriage stars (Peach Blossom, Red Phoenix) — during these periods, invest as much as possible in social life: new acquaintances, events, trips.

5. Therapy and Self-Development

Many "difficult charts" in marriage are connected to childhood traumas tied to the Day Branch. Therapy and working on oneself are the best "remedy" against negative patterns.

6. Accept Solitude as a Path, if So Indicated

Some charts show the "path of the solitary one": monks, hermit-artists, business fanatics. This is not failure. It is a different path. Not everyone needs marriage, and this is visible in the chart.

The main rule: the chart shows a predisposition, but the person chooses how to live it. Two people with identical charts can live entirely different marriages. The chart is the steering wheel, but you sit behind it.

10 Famous Combinations — Marriages in History

Let us conclude with practical examples from the lives of well-known people.

"The Marriage of the Century": Day Branches in Liu He

Many legendary married couples had Day Branches forming a Liu He. For example, in ideal "diplomatic pairs" — where one has Zǐ and the other Chǒu — the union holds for decades, through every crisis. These are "palaces that have embraced each other."

"Married Seven Times": Multiple Officer Stars

Famous actresses and singers who have gone through several marriages (Liz Taylor, for example — was married 8 times) often have charts with a multitude of Officer stars on the stems, an active Peach Blossom, and a Clash on the Day Branch. This is the chart of a "magnet for men," but also a "magnet for divorces."

Long Love Stories: San He of the Day Branch

When the Day Branches of two people belong to a single Triple Union (for example, he has Shēn, she has Zǐ), the marriage becomes part of a "great life project." These are couples who build empires together: businesses, charitable foundations, political movements.

"Secret Marriages": the Spouse Star Only in Hidden Stems

Often found among spiritual leaders, mystics, hermits: the spouse star exists, but is "hidden" within the Mu Ku. They frequently have secret partners, spiritual "companions," or a marriage kept secret from society.

The Dramas of the Clash: High-Profile Divorces

The high-profile divorces of politicians and celebrities are almost always accompanied by the activation of a Clash on the Day Branch + a Liu Nian with the opposing branch. This is not "chance" — it is the activation of a scenario already embedded in the chart.

Every marriage story has its "seed" in the chart. The flower may grow beautiful or poisonous — but the seed was always there.

Conclusion

Reading marriage in BaZi is not "fortune-telling." It is the analysis of deep energetic patterns: which partner archetype you attract, at what age, how long relationships last, where your pain points and strengths as a spouse lie. This knowledge gives you awareness — and awareness, in turn, gives you freedom of choice.

Marriage is not merely an "event in life." It is one of the principal energetic exchanges a person lives through. By understanding your chart, you can:

Remember: destiny shows, but the person chooses. And this choice is the principal freedom that you have.
