Among the dozens of stars in classical BaZi there is one associated with the most ancient and most enduring human hierarchy — the hierarchy of the army. This is Jiang Xing, "The General Star" (將星 (jiàng xīng — "General Star")). Not a star of force and not a star of fury — but a star of command. Of the ability to hold the whole picture in one's head, to give orders, to bear responsibility for the fate of people and not falter under its weight.
In the classics Jiang Xing is described briefly and with the utmost concision: "有將星者, 必為將相" — "whoever has Jiang Xing will surely become a general or a minister." In the 21st century the wording has changed — but the essence has remained. Bearers of Jiang Xing occupy the summits of hierarchies: their charts often belong to the CEOs of large corporations, university rectors, editors-in-chief, national team coaches, leaders of political parties.
1 What the Jiang Xing star is
The character 將 (jiàng) has many meanings in modern Chinese, but in a military context it means "general, commander, military leader." 星 (xīng) means "star." Together they form "the star of the general," "the general's star." In ancient China this was literally an astronomical mark: a star under which the birth of military leaders was expected.
Jiang Xing is the central (middle) branch of the triad in the circle of earthly branches. Triads in BaZi are three branches that form a union of one element. Each triad has:
- the initial branch (生, birth) — the start of the element. This is the "star of travels," Yi Ma;
- the middle branch (旺, flourishing) — the peak of the element's strength. This is Jiang Xing;
- the final branch (墓, the storehouse) — completion, accumulation. This is the "canopy," Hua Gai.
Jiang Xing is strength at its zenith. Not "too much" (as with Yang Ren, which is dangerous), but "exactly as much as is needed for victory." This is a calm, confident, organised might — the might of a general whose army is in formation and whose orders are carried out.
In its pure form Jiang Xing is connected with:
- innate authority — people are drawn to the bearer intuitively;
- strategic thinking — the ability to see 5-10 moves ahead;
- composure in a crisis — when there is panic all around, the bearer gives clear orders;
- organisational talents — the ability to build structures, hierarchies, processes;
- service to a higher purpose — Jiang Xing almost always works "in the name of" something (the state, an idea, a mission).
2 How Jiang Xing is calculated
Jiang Xing is determined by the earthly branch of the year of birth. The classical school uses the year only; some modern masters also check the day branch.
The logic of the calculation: take your year branch, find its triad, and the Jiang Xing star is the middle (flourishing) branch of that triad.
| If your year branch is: | The Jiang Xing star is: | Triad |
|---|---|---|
| 申 Shen · 子 Zi · 辰 Chen | 子 Zi (Rat) | Water triad |
| 巳 Si · 酉 You · 丑 Chou | 酉 You (Rooster) | Metal triad |
| 寅 Yin · 午 Wu · 戌 Xu | 午 Wu (Horse) | Fire triad |
| 亥 Hai · 卯 Mao · 未 Wei | 卯 Mao (Rabbit) | Wood triad |
That is, Jiang Xing is always one of the four "royal" branches: Zi, You, Wu, Mao. These are the so-called "four flowers" (四桃花 (táo huā — "Peach Blossom"), si tao hua) or "royal branches." They symbolise the peak of the element and the peak of strength. It is no coincidence that these same branches are the positions of the Tao Hua (romance) and Yang Ren (the Blade) stars: the peak of strength can be directed into charisma, into command, or into destruction.
The strength of the position
Jiang Xing "works" more strongly if the branch stands:
- in the month pillar (the career position);
- in the day pillar (the personality position, a very strong "leadership by nature");
- supported by the corresponding stem — for example, for a Fire Jiang Xing (Wu) the chart contains the stems Bing or Ding.
3 The position of Jiang Xing in the pillars
Jiang Xing "flourishes" in any position, but the meaning of leadership is different each time.
Jiang Xing in the year — leadership comes "by inheritance." Often the family line included officers, heads of firms, collective-farm chairmen, school directors. The child grew up in an atmosphere of "managerial talk" at the table. From childhood they organise the games, take command at school.
Jiang Xing in the month — the most "career-oriented" position. These are people who make a lightning-fast career: by 30 a department, by 40 a division, by 50 the company. The month is the "social stage," and the star here literally pushes the bearer to the summit of the hierarchy.
Jiang Xing in the day — the star "right inside the person." These are people born for the team. They cannot "not lead." In any collective they automatically become the leader — even if they are not formally appointed. The marriage partner is strong too, which sometimes produces a "war of two generals."
Jiang Xing in the hour — leadership comes in the second half of life. Such people often become "elders" — patriarchs of the family, founders of dynasties, fathers of great undertakings. After 50-60 — the peak of influence. The children most often also go into leadership positions.
4 The positive manifestations of Jiang Xing
When the star "works," the bearer acquires a whole complex of leadership qualities that sets them apart advantageously in any hierarchy.
The gifts of the General Star
The ability to "carry the banner"
The main function of a Jiang Xing bearer is to be the point around which people gather. In the army that is the general, in business the CEO, in politics the party leader, in sport the team captain, in the family the patriarch. Without such people, collectives fall apart.
The bearer of Jiang Xing is often not the smartest in the room, not the most talented, not the most eloquent. But they are the one you can rely on. And that is a quality not gained through training; either you have it or you do not. Jiang Xing is the stellar code of this quality.
5 The dark side of Jiang Xing
Every great power has a corresponding price. Jiang Xing is no exception.
The dangers of the "general's" star
- Pride and arrogance. When people listen to you for years, it is easy to start considering yourself "above" them. The bearer of Jiang Xing often loses the ability to hear criticism and advice.
- Authoritarianism. The habit of giving orders carries over into family, friendship, relationships. Those close to them feel like "subordinates," which destroys intimacy.
- The loneliness of the summit. At the very top of the hierarchy there are few equals. The bearer of Jiang Xing often has no one to share weakness, fear, doubt with. They are obliged to "keep up appearances."
- Overload of responsibility. The bearer often takes on too much — for the company, for the country, for the family, for everything at once. Burnout is the typical finale of "leaders without a holiday."
- Difficulties with equals. Jiang Xing builds vertical relationships. Horizontal ones — friendship among equals, partnership without hierarchy — come hard.
- Harshness in marriage. The partner feels they are being "drilled." It is especially acute if both spouses are Jiang Xing: then the home turns into a constant standoff between two commanders.
- A fall from the heights. When the leadership career ends (resignation, retirement, loss of position), the bearer loses the ground beneath their feet. "Who am I without my role?" — a crisis that many generals and CEOs go through.
6 Combinations of Jiang Xing with other stars
The leadership star unfolds differently depending on which other configurations are present in the chart.
Jiang Xing + 七殺 (qī shā — "Seven Killings") (Qi Sha — the Seven Killings)
"A general at war." The most military combination. The Seven Killings gives hardness, the ability to attack, decisiveness; Jiang Xing gives structure and authority. Together — this is the chart of great generals, hard-driving CEOs, turnaround managers. Here often stand outstanding military leaders, founders of empires.
Jiang Xing + 正官 (zhèng guān — "Direct Officer") (Zheng Guan — the Direct Officer)
"A general in the service of the state." Zheng Guan gives legitimacy, law-abidingness, an institutional bent. With Jiang Xing — this is the ideal high-level politician, minister, general by the book, a wise official. A career in state structures.
Jiang Xing + 印 (Resource Stars)
"A scholar-general." The Resource gives wisdom, education, academic depth. With Jiang Xing — this is a university rector, an academy president, a chief scientific director. Leadership through knowledge and the authority of intellect.
Jiang Xing + 財 (Wealth Stars)
"A businessman-general." A strong financial combination. The bearer becomes a company founder, a CEO, the owner of a chain. Leadership through capital and a team of managers.
Jiang Xing + 食神 (shí shén — "Eating God") / 傷官 (shāng guān — "Hurting Officer") (Output Stars)
"An orator-general." The Output Stars give speech, charisma, the ability to inspire. With Jiang Xing — this is a charismatic politician, a coach of motivational programmes, a leader of a social movement. Leadership through the word.
Jiang Xing + 天乙貴人 (tiān yǐ guì rén — "Heavenly Noble") (Tian Yi — the Noble Person)
"A general under patronage." A very favourable combination. On the bearer's path, influential mentors, patrons, benefactors appear. The career unfolds "magically" — the right doors open by themselves.
Double Jiang Xing
If the chart has two identical Jiang Xing branches (for example, two Horses 午 for the Fire triad) — this is a very strong leadership potential. Often such people head not one but several structures at once. But the toll on health is correspondingly heavy.

The star does not "work" evenly throughout life. It awakens in particular periods, and it is precisely then that the bearer makes their main ascents.
Activation scenarios
- The luck pillar brings the same branch. For example, Jiang Xing is Wu (the Horse), and a decade arrives with the branch Wu. This is a "general's decade": advancement in the hierarchy, attaining a high position, reaching a new level of responsibility.
- The year brings the same branch. Every "own" year is a chance for promotion, recognition, a new leadership role. Personnel decisions, elections, appointments.
- The luck pillar brings a branch of the triad. For example, for a Fire Jiang Xing (Wu) the branch Yin or Xu (the Fire triad) arrives. The star is "highlighted" indirectly — growth comes through adjacent spheres.
- A clash of branches (沖). When the opposite branch arrives (Zi ↔ Wu, You ↔ Mao), Jiang Xing "shakes": a change of roles, resignation, fall and rebirth, an unexpected struggle for power.
Specific years of activation
| Your Jiang Xing | Strong years (activation) | Clash (chong) |
|---|---|---|
| 子 Zi (Rat) | 2032, 2044 | 2026, 2038 (Horse) |
| 酉 You (Rooster) | 2029, 2041 | 2023, 2035 (Rabbit) |
| 午 Wu (Horse) | 2026, 2038 | 2032, 2044 (Rat) |
| 卯 Mao (Rabbit) | 2023, 2035, 2047 | 2029, 2041 (Rooster) |
In years of Jiang Xing activation, the following typically happens:
- appointment to a new leadership position, promotion in rank;
- the creation of one's own business, public organisation, project;
- stepping into public leadership — elections, media, expert roles;
- taking on great responsibility (crisis management, inheriting the family business);
- "the handing over of the banner" — taking on a role previously carried by a parent, mentor, predecessor.
In years of clash (chong), Jiang Xing often brings:
- resignation, demotion, dismissal, loss of position;
- a power struggle in the company, the political bloc, the family;
- a restructuring of the career, a move into another sphere;
- health — especially problems with the organs that correspond to the element of the star.

9 Jiang Xing archetypes: famous bearers
Without naming specific living people, here are composite archetypes.
The "Great General" archetype
The image: a field marshal who won the war. Cool-headed, strategic, beloved by the soldiers, respected by the enemy. Alexander the Great, Kutuzov, Napoleon, Zhukov — all of them carried a powerful Jiang Xing. Their charts always show the central branch of a strong triad, activated in the years of decisive campaigns.
The "Empire Founder" archetype
The image: a leader who built a company from scratch and turned it into a global brand. Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos — each of them has a leadership backbone in their chart with Jiang Xing in a strong position. The ability to carry a vision for decades — that is its work.
The "Statesman" archetype
The image: a prime minister, president, chancellor holding a country steady through a storm. Margaret Thatcher, Winston Churchill, Angela Merkel — calm, firm, able to make unpopular decisions. Jiang Xing in their charts is often reinforced by the Tian Yi star (a noble patron) and Zheng Guan (legitimacy).
The "Coach of Champions" archetype
The image: a national team head coach who made the team great. Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool, Tatiana Tarasova in figure skating. This is not athletic leadership but organisational — gathering stars into a team and maintaining discipline.
The "Patriarch of a Family Empire" archetype
The image: the founder of a dynasty who holds dozens of relatives, businesses, divisions in his fist. From the head of the Rockefeller clan to the founders of the family holdings Hyundai, Samsung, LVMH. After 60-70 such a bearer is the "father of fathers," to whom everyone comes for counsel.
10 Practical application: how to work with Jiang Xing
If this star is active in you or someone close to you — here are a few practical guideposts.
If Jiang Xing is active in you
- Do not flee from leadership. If you are a bearer — sooner or later you will be drawn to leadership roles. Do not resist — it is your place. Resistance leads to frustration and a life that is "not your own."
- Learn professionally. Leadership is a skill, not only a gift. Read the classics of management — from Sun Tzu to Drucker. Take MBA programmes, executive coaching, military courses — whatever suits your sphere.
- Find your mentor. Jiang Xing flourishes under the mentorship of a strong figure. Seek out an elder you can learn from for 5-10 years. This lays the foundation.
- Spare those close to you your "commanding." At home you are not a general. Learn to take off the uniform when you enter the family. Otherwise you will lose those dearest to you.
- Build a "second life." You must have an activity in which you are NOT the commander — a hobby, sport, art. Without it, losing your position, you will collapse.
- Acquire equals. Find 2-3 people of your own level with whom you can speak "as equals" — without hierarchy, without masks. This is critical for the psyche.
- Take care of the body. Leaders "burn out": high blood pressure, heart problems, insomnia. Regular check-ups, physical activity, holidays — are mandatory.
- Prepare a successor. A bearer of Jiang Xing is obliged to hand over the "banner." Find someone you believe in, and train them for years. Otherwise your work will die with you.
If Jiang Xing is in a partner/colleague/child
- Respect their "commandership." Do not try to "take them off their pedestal" — it is their nature. Let them be a leader in their spheres.
- Do not enter into frontal conflict. Jiang Xing does not retreat. If you want to change a decision, approach from the side — through persuasion, arguments, not an ultimatum.
- Be their "rear guard." Leaders need a home without demands. If you are a partner of Jiang Xing — your strength is in stability and support, not in a struggle for dominance.
- A Jiang Xing child. Do not suppress their leadership. Do not say "don't push yourself forward." Encourage them to be the team captain, class president, organiser of school projects.
