In the BaZi (八字) system, besides the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, there are symbolic stars (神煞, shen sha) — special markers in the birth chart that add further shades to a person's character and destiny. Among them, 天喜 (tiān xǐ — "Heavenly Joy") (Tian Xi, Heavenly Joy) holds a special place: it is the star of celebration, happiness, romantic events and everything that brings joy into life.
The character 天 means "heaven," while 喜 means "joy, happiness, rejoicing." In traditional Chinese culture the doubled 喜喜 (囍) is the symbol of a wedding. That is why Tian Xi is inseparably linked with joyous events: weddings, the birth of children, promotions, celebrations. This star is as if the Universe itself had decided to smile upon you.
1 The nature and energy of the Tian Xi star
Tian Xi belongs to the group of auspicious symbolic stars (吉星). In the classification of the Ziping school and the canon of Joey Yap, Tian Xi is the "twin star" of Hong Luan (紅鸞 (hóng luán — "Red Phoenix"), Red Luan), and together they form a pair of stars of romance and marriage. If Hong Luan is the beginning of romantic feeling, infatuation and attraction, then Tian Xi is the culmination of joy: the wedding, the birth of a child, the happy event.
The main qualities of the Tian Xi energy:
- Joy and optimism — a person with Tian Xi in the chart radiates positive energy, and people are drawn to them.
- Festivity — wherever Tian Xi is, something good always happens: parties, celebrations, surprises.
- Fertility — both in the literal sense (children) and the figurative (ideas, projects, results).
- Charisma and attractiveness — Tian Xi endows a person with "magnetism," especially in the eyes of the opposite sex.
- Luck in social situations — people with Tian Xi make acquaintances easily and receive help and support.
2 How to find Tian Xi in a BaZi chart
Tian Xi is determined by the Earthly Branch of the year of birth (日支, the day branch — see note below). The calculation algorithm is based on opposite positions in the ring of twelve Earthly Branches. Tian Xi and Hong Luan always sit opposite each other on the axis of the cycle.
The formula: Tian Xi is determined from the Earthly Branch of the Year pillar. For each animal year there is a fixed branch in which Tian Xi "lives":
| Year (Earthly Branch) | Tian Xi (天喜) | Hong Luan (紅鸞) |
|---|---|---|
| 子 Rat | 酉 Rooster | 卯 Rabbit |
| 丑 Ox | 申 Monkey | 寅 Tiger |
| 寅 Tiger | 未 Goat | 丑 Ox |
| 卯 Rabbit | 午 Horse | 子 Rat |
| 辰 Dragon | 巳 Snake | 亥 Pig |
| 巳 Snake | 辰 Dragon | 戌 Dog |
| 午 Horse | 卯 Rabbit | 酉 Rooster |
| 未 Goat | 寅 Tiger | 申 Monkey |
| 申 Monkey | 丑 Ox | 未 Goat |
| 酉 Rooster | 子 Rat | 午 Horse |
| 戌 Dog | 亥 Pig | 巳 Snake |
| 亥 Pig | 戌 Dog | 辰 Dragon |
How to read the table: find the Earthly Branch of your year of birth (your animal year) in the left-hand column. The middle column shows in which branch your Tian Xi sits. If this branch is present in one of the four pillars of your chart (Year, Month, Day, Hour) — you have the Tian Xi star.
3 Tian Xi in the different pillars of the chart
The position of Tian Xi in a particular pillar of the chart determines in which sphere of life and at what age its joyful energy manifests.
Tian Xi in the Year pillar
The Year pillar is connected with ancestors, roots, early childhood (0–15 years) and one's outer social image. Tian Xi here tells us that the person was born into a happy atmosphere — the family rejoiced at their arrival, early childhood was filled with warmth. Such people are distinguished from a young age by charm and an ability to win over their elders. It often indicates good relations with grandparents.
Tian Xi in the Month pillar
The Month pillar is career, social role, the age of 15–30. Tian Xi in this pillar means popularity within a group, success in social interactions, an early happy marriage (often before 25). The person easily finds allies at work, is invited to every company gathering, and is helped to advance. In their career they are "lucky" — they often obtain positions through connections and personal charm.
Tian Xi in the Day pillar
The Day pillar is the most "personal" pillar: it is connected with the partner, marriage and the age of 30–45. Tian Xi here is one of the most favourable indicators for marriage. The person attracts partners naturally, and their relationships are filled with joy and mutual pleasure. There is a natural inclination toward romance: surprises, gifts, pleasant gestures come easily and bring delight.
Tian Xi in the Hour pillar
The Hour pillar is children, students, legacy and the age after 45. Tian Xi in the Hour pillar points to joy from children: they will be a source of happiness, fortunate offspring, and support in old age. It is also a favourable sign for later life — the person will be surrounded by care, merriment, and grandchildren. The second half of life often turns out happier than the first.
4 Tian Xi and love: the star of romance
The chief "speciality" of Tian Xi is romantic relationships and marriage. The classical Ziping texts say that the appearance of Tian Xi in the chart or in an incoming year is one of the most important indicators of a wedding, an engagement, or the beginning of a serious relationship.
How Tian Xi influences love life:
- Attractiveness: a person with Tian Xi possesses a particular "glow" — they appear more attractive to others than usual. This is not physical beauty, but an energetic magnetism, an inner warmth.
- Happy encounters: Tian Xi attracts the kinds of situations in which romantic meetings arise — parties, journeys, unexpected events.
- Swift development of a relationship: under the influence of Tian Xi, relationships often develop rapidly — very little time may pass from a first meeting to a wedding.
- Joy in relationships: even in difficult charts, Tian Xi "lights up" relationships, making them lighter and more joyful than they otherwise might be.
5 Tian Xi and childbearing
The character 喜 in Chinese is closely tied to pregnancy: the expression 有喜 (yǒu xǐ) literally means "to have joy," and in practice "to be pregnant." That is why Tian Xi has historically been regarded as the star of fertility and childbearing.
Influence on fertility:
- The year Tian Xi arrives often coincides with conception or the birth of a child — especially if the chart's Hour pillar is favourable.
- Tian Xi in the Hour pillar (the pillar of children) is one of the best indicators for easy births, healthy children, and harmonious relations between parent and child.
- For women: a Tian Xi year + a favourable element in the Year pillar = a high probability of pregnancy.
- For men: a Tian Xi year often coincides with the birth of a child, which brings particular joy and positive change.
It is important to remember, however, that Tian Xi works together with the overall context of the chart. If the element of children (for women, the Hour pillar and the "Output star"; for men, the "Authority star") is weakened or blocked, Tian Xi alone does not guarantee childbearing. A BaZi Master analyses all factors together.
6 Tian Xi and social life
Beyond romance and children, Tian Xi exerts a powerful influence on a person's social life and popularity. This is the "star of the party" — the person whom others are drawn to, whom they invite, with whom they want to spend time.
Manifestations in the social sphere:
- Natural charisma: people with Tian Xi know how to create an atmosphere of celebration around themselves. They are the "life of the party," without whom a party is no party at all.
- A wide circle of acquaintances: Tian Xi attracts people from different spheres. Such people often have a very colourful and interesting social network.
- Luck in public activity: actors, bloggers, hosts, public speakers — Tian Xi helps one "shine" before an audience.
- Help from those around: when a person with Tian Xi runs into problems, help arrives as if from nowhere — someone is always ready to lend a shoulder.
7 Tian Xi and Hong Luan: the pair of romance stars
Tian Xi (天喜) and Hong Luan (紅鸞) are an inseparable pair. They always sit opposite each other on the axis of the Earthly Branches and work in tandem. Yet there are important differences between them.
Key differences:
- Hong Luan = process (falling in love), Tian Xi = result (rejoicing, celebrating).
- Hong Luan is emotional (the heart), Tian Xi is event-based (a wedding, a child, a gift).
- Hong Luan can be painful (unrequited love), Tian Xi is almost always positive.
- Hong Luan is more active for the young (first love), Tian Xi works at any age (joy is universal).
When both stars are activated at once in a single year (both Hong Luan and Tian Xi) — this is one of the most powerful indicators of a wedding in the BaZi tradition. Masters of the Joey Yap school call such a combination a "double romantic strike" — the relationship develops quickly and leads to a serious union.
8 Tian Xi in the luck pillars and annual cycles
Even if there is no Tian Xi in your natal chart, it will certainly come in certain years and luck cycles. Every person passes through periods when Tian Xi is activated — and these periods often coincide with the happiest moments of life.
Tian Xi in the annual cycle
Every 12 years a year arrives in which the Earthly Branch of the year coincides with your Tian Xi. This is a "year of joy" — a period when the probability of significant happy events is at its maximum. Look at the table above to see which branch is your Tian Xi, and find the nearest year carrying that branch.
Tian Xi in the ten-year luck cycle (大運 (dà yùn — "Luck Pillars"))
When Tian Xi arrives in a luck cycle, it is a whole decade coloured by joy. People often describe these periods as "the best years of life": a wedding, the birth of children, a career breakthrough, new friendships — everything happens on a wave of positivity. This shows up especially strongly if the Tian Xi luck cycle coincides with a favourable overall flow of the chart.
What to watch for
- A Tian Xi year + a favourable element = the strongest possible joyous event.
- A Tian Xi year + a clash (冲) = the joy may have an "aftertaste" — for example, a wedding amid a relocation or a change of job.
- A Tian Xi luck cycle + a Hong Luan year = the ideal time for a wedding and starting a family.
- A double Tian Xi (both in the natal chart and in the current year) = very powerful joyful energy, but sometimes "too much" — impulsiveness needs to be kept in check.

Symbolic stars in BaZi never work in isolation. Tian Xi interacts with other stars, and these combinations can strengthen, weaken or transform its influence.
Favourable combinations
Complex combinations
- Tian Xi + Tao Hua (桃花, Peach Blossom) — attractiveness increases manyfold, but there is a risk of superficial connections. Joy from romance, but without depth. Awareness is needed in choosing a partner.
- Tian Xi + Gu Chen (孤辰) or Gua Su (寡宿) — the stars of solitude weaken Tian Xi's joyful energy. The person may feel joy, but in solitude — for example, delighting in creative achievements without sharing that joy with a partner.
- Tian Xi + a clash (冲) — if the Tian Xi branch comes under a clash with another branch of the chart, joy may arrive through overcoming: happiness after a crisis, a wedding after a break-up, a child after a difficult course of treatment.
- Tian Xi + Yang Ren (羊刃, the Goat Blade) — impulsiveness in joy. The person may make hasty decisions on a wave of emotion: a precipitous marriage, ill-considered large purchases "in the heat of joy."
10 Practical advice for people with Tian Xi
If the Tian Xi star is present in your BaZi chart — or if you are entering a period when it is activated — here are concrete recommendations on how to use its energy as effectively as possible.
- Use Tian Xi years for key decisions. A wedding, the birth of a child, the opening of a business, a major purchase — plan them for a year when your Tian Xi is active. The energy of joy will support a favourable outcome.
- Be socially active. Tian Xi grows stronger through interaction: go to events, meet new people, accept invitations. It is in social situations that Tian Xi brings its gifts.
- Do not turn away from romance. If you are single and your Tian Xi is being activated — this is the time to open yourself to relationships. Do not hide behind work or routine. The Universe is sending opportunities — catch them.
- Keep impulsiveness in check. Joy is a wonderful feeling, but it can blind. Do not make important financial decisions "on emotion." Give yourself time to think, even if everything seems perfect.
- Share the joy. Tian Xi is not a selfish star. It works best when joy is shared. Throw celebrations, give gifts, help others — and Tian Xi will repay you a hundredfold.
- Watch your health in the "years of joy." Paradoxically, Tian Xi periods are often accompanied by reduced attention to health — the person is too caught up in celebrating. Do not forget about sleep, nutrition and physical activity.
- For planning a pregnancy — pay attention to years when Tian Xi coincides with a favourable Hour pillar. These are the optimal periods for conception.
- Strengthen your relationship. If you are already married, a Tian Xi year is the ideal time to "renew" the relationship: a trip together, a second honeymoon, a new shared project.
- Calculate your full chart. Tian Xi is one element of a large mosaic. To understand exactly how it works in your particular situation, you need a full chart reading according to the canon of the Joey Yap school, including all pillars, elements and stars.
The Tian Xi star is one of the brightest and most positive forces in the BaZi system. It reminds us that within the chart of destiny there are not only challenges and lessons, but also promises of joy. Knowing when and where this joy is available, you can consciously steer your life toward its best moments.
Remember: a BaZi Master is not fortune-telling, but navigation. Your chart is a map of routes, and Tian Xi is a lighthouse pointing toward the harbour of joy. Whether you reach it depends on you.
