Among the twelve "special stars" of classical BaZi there is one that brings to a modern master's mind the image of an airport, a wheeled suitcase and a departures board. This is Yi Ma — the "Travelling Horse" (驛馬 (yì mǎ — "Travelling Horse")), known in English literature as the Travelling Horse or Postal Horse. The star of movement, relocations, long journeys and the impossibility of staying put.
If Jiang Xing focuses on hierarchy and power, Hua Gai on silence and spirit, Xue Ren on the blade and force, then Yi Ma directs all its energy toward one thing: not standing still. Its bearers are eternal passengers, carriers, diplomats, emigrants, foreign correspondents, digital nomads, sailors, long-haul drivers, pilots. Any life in which the movement matters more than the destination.
1 What the Yi Ma star is
The character 驛 (yì) in ancient China meant a "postal station" — a place where the couriers of the imperial post changed horses while carrying dispatches across the whole empire. 馬 (mǎ) is "horse." Together — the "postal horse," the "horse from the postal station." In the literal sense, a horse that does not graze in one field but constantly gallops from city to city, bearing letters and orders.
The image is remarkably precise. The bearer of Yi Ma is the "postal horse of destiny." They carry cities, countries, cultures, professions and relationships between one another. They are present where others are not. They meet people whom the locals will never encounter. Their home is a suitcase or, in the modern version, a backpack-as-portable-office.
In the Ziping (子平) classics, Yi Ma is the initial (generating) branch of a triad. Each element has a triad of three branches: birth → flowering → completion. The Yi Ma star is always the first, "generating" branch of the triad. It is the branch in which the element only begins to move, has not yet taken shape, is still on the way.
In its pure form, Yi Ma is connected with:
- long-distance trips and emigration — bearers often live somewhere other than where they were born;
- relocations and changes of city — over a lifetime they change 3–5–10 places of residence;
- international activity — export-import, diplomacy, translation, tourism;
- changes of profession and partner — the restlessness lies not only in geography but also in social ties;
- transport and logistics — literal work with movement;
- working remotely — the modern digital form of the "travelling horse."
2 How Yi Ma is calculated
Yi Ma is determined by the Earthly Branch of the year or day of birth. The logic: take your branch, find its triad, and the Yi Ma star is the "root" branch opposite the middle (Jiang Xing) of the triad. More precisely, Yi Ma is the branch that conflicts with the central branch of the triad.
| If your year/day branch is: | The Yi Ma star is: | The logic |
|---|---|---|
| 巳 Si · 酉 You · 丑 Chou (Metal) | 亥 Hai (Pig) | Conflict with the centre (You) |
| 申 Shen · 子 Zi · 辰 Chen (Water) | 寅 Yin (Tiger) | Conflict with the centre (Zi) |
| 亥 Hai · 卯 Mao · 未 Wei (Wood) | 巳 Si (Snake) | Conflict with the centre (Mao) |
| 寅 Yin · 午 Wu · 戌 Xu (Fire) | 申 Shen (Monkey) | Conflict with the centre (Wu) |
Note: Yi Ma is always one of the four "moving" branches: Hai, Yin, Si, Shen. These branches correspond to the four seasonal transitions in the Chinese calendar: the Pig — the start of winter, the Tiger — the start of spring, the Snake — the start of summer, the Monkey — the start of autumn. Each of them is a branch of change, transition, beginning. By nature they carry the energy of movement.
A peculiarity: Yi Ma always "conflicts" with the centre
Unlike Jiang Xing (which rests at peace in the centre of the triad), Yi Ma is always the branch that conflicts (沖, chong) with the centre of the triad. This conflict is the very "engine" of the star. The inner discord between "home" (the centre) and "the road" (Yi Ma) is the tension that drives the bearer to move throughout life.
3 The position of Yi Ma in the pillars
The same star reveals itself differently depending on which pillar it stands in.
Yi Ma in the Year — travel in the family history. Often these are the children of diplomats, military personnel, sailors, scientists posted abroad. The family relocates with the child, or the child leaves early (aged 5–10) to study in another city. A habit of the suitcase from childhood.
Yi Ma in the Month — the career is bound up with movement. This is "I'm always on the road for work" — an export manager, a foreign correspondent, a company's regional representative, a travelling trainer, a performer on tour. The desk in the office stands empty, because the bearer is there 5 days a year.
Yi Ma in the Day — the most powerful position. The star is "right inside the person." These are people who physically cannot stay in one place for long. After 2–3 years in any city, things start to feel "tight." A year or two — and they are off again. Marriages are often cross-cultural, since partners too are met in different countries.
Yi Ma in the Hour — travel in the second half of life. Often such people begin to travel actively after 50 — the "time to see the world" arrives. Sometimes — late emigration, a move to be near children abroad, a long journey as a "new chapter of life." The children too often emigrate.
4 The positive manifestations of Yi Ma
When the star finds a noble application, it gives its bearer a whole fan of qualities inaccessible to "settled" people.
The gifts of the Travelling Horse
"A courier between worlds"
The main function of the Yi Ma bearer is to be a bridge between different "worlds." Between countries, cultures, industries, generations. They bring ideas from Japan to Russia, technologies from Silicon Valley to Europe, Eastern practices into Western clinics. Without them, civilisation would be fragmentary and provincial.
That is why, in the age of globalisation, Yi Ma is one of the most sought-after stars. What in feudal China was "the oddity of the postal courier" has, in the 21st century, become "the career of a successful internationalist." The digital economy is native to the bearers of Yi Ma.
5 The dark side of Yi Ma
Constant movement has its price. And if the star "has not found itself work," its energy turns into a source of chronic problems.
The dangers of the road
- The impossibility of putting down roots. After two or three years in any city, it becomes "stifling." Friendship has no time to deepen. Nor does love. The bearer changes city, and the social circle resets to zero.
- Superficial relationships. When the people around you are constantly changing, emotional involvement drops. "Why get attached if I'll leave in a year." This is a defence mechanism — but it also creates loneliness.
- Difficulties with children. Constant relocations are hard on children: changing schools, being torn from friends, language difficulties. The children of Yi Ma bearers often live this experience as trauma.
- Financial instability. Without a fixed point and savings in one place, it is hard to build a material base. Money "drains away" into flights, relocations, new furniture in every apartment.
- Emotional burnout from changing contexts. Each relocation means dozens of new names, bureaucratic procedures, culture shocks. After 5–10 years of such a rhythm, exhaustion sets in.
- Accidents on the road. Especially in the years of activation (see the section on Da Yun) — a heightened risk of road accidents, problems with planes, trains, ships. The bearer is literally on the road a great deal, and the statistics catch up.
- "Fleeing instead of resolving." Any difficulty is an excuse to leave. A divorce? Leave. A career crisis? Leave. This turns into a pattern of avoidance that prevents one from working through a problem.
6 Combinations of Yi Ma with other stars
The star of movement reveals itself differently depending on which other configurations "sound" together with it.
Yi Ma + 財 (the Wealth Stars)
"The horse that carries money." The most favourable combination. The bearer earns through movement: export-import, trade between cities and countries, international deals. Many successful merchants of antiquity and of the present day have exactly this combination. Each relocation is a new monetisation.
Yi Ma + 正官 (zhèng guān — "Direct Officer") (Zheng Guan — the Direct Officer)
"The horse in state service." Diplomacy, international missions, work in a foreign ministry, trade representations, postings abroad on behalf of state bodies. The bearer gains the legitimacy of movement through an official mission.
Yi Ma + 印 (the Resource Stars)
"The wandering scholar." Education in different countries, academic postings, international research. The bearers are often scholars with a PhD from a foreign university, professors with three affiliations, experts lecturing around the world.
Yi Ma + 七殺 (qī shā — "Seven Killings") (Qi Sha — the Seven Killings)
"The military traveller." Military missions, special forces, peacekeeping operations, security work in hot spots. Also — foreign correspondents in armed conflicts, humanitarian workers in crisis zones.
Yi Ma + 桃花 (táo huā — "Peach Blossom") (Tao Hua — the Peach Blossom)
"The wanderer of love." Numerous romances in different countries, cross-cultural marriages, frequent changes of partner tied to relocations. On the one hand, a rich personal life; on the other, the impossibility of building a stable family.
Yi Ma + 沖 (branch conflict)
A double chong is a "frenzied wheel." The bearer is almost never at home: a business trip out of a business trip, a flight out of a flight. Sometimes — a string of accidents and instability.
Multiple Yi Ma
If the chart has two or three Yi Ma branches (for example, both Shen and Yin at once) — this is a "hyper-wanderer." Life is literally in motion: deep-sea sailors, pilots, roving performers, professional emigrants. They often live in several countries at the same time.

Calculate your chart for free →7 Yi Ma in Da Yun — the activation of relocations
Yi Ma is one of the most "activatable" stars. Its triggers in Da Yun and Liu Nian literally predict relocations, emigrations and major movements.
Scenarios of activation
- The luck pillar brings the same branch. For example, your Yi Ma is Shen, and a decade arrives with the Shen branch. This is a "decade of the road": relocation, emigration, long postings, a change to "travelling" work.
- The year brings the same branch. Each of "your" years is a concrete movement: a relocation, a long-distance trip, a new job elsewhere, an extended journey.
- Branch conflict (沖). When the opposite branch arrives (Shen ↔ Yin, Hai ↔ Si), Yi Ma "fires" abruptly. Sudden relocations, force-majeure emigrations, emergency business trips, sometimes — accidents.
- Triadic activation. When a pillar or year gathers all three branches of the Yi Ma triad (for example, for the Fire Yi Ma — Shen — Zi and Chen arrive), this is a "full union of the road": a serious life shift connected with geography.
Specific years of activation
| Your Yi Ma | Strong years (activation) | Conflict (chong) |
|---|---|---|
| 亥 Hai (Pig) | 2031, 2043 | 2025, 2037 (Snake) |
| 寅 Yin (Tiger) | 2034, 2046 | 2028, 2040 (Monkey) |
| 巳 Si (Snake) | 2025, 2037 | 2031, 2043 (Pig) |
| 申 Shen (Monkey) | 2028, 2040 | 2034, 2046 (Tiger) |
In the years of Yi Ma activation, typically the following happens:
- a relocation to another city or country;
- a change to "travelling" work — business trips, remote work, relocation;
- a long-distance journey, the dream of which had been building for years;
- emigration, the arrangement of a residence permit, a second citizenship;
- meeting a future partner on a trip (often — a cross-cultural marriage);
- study abroad, an exchange programme, an internship;
- the purchase of a car, motorcycle, boat — a new "horse."
In the conflict (chong) years, Yi Ma often brings:
- a forced relocation (for example, loss of a job → relocation);
- accidents, trouble on the road, problems with transport;
- divorces and separations linked to geographical division;
- emergency emigrations caused by external circumstances.

9 The archetypes of Yi Ma: famous bearers
The "Great Traveller" archetype
The image: an explorer who has crossed every continent. Marco Polo, Ivan Yefremov, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Thor Heyerdahl. Their charts contain a strong Yi Ma, activated in the years of their expeditions. For them, home is a tent, a ship, a sleeping bag.
The "Diplomat of Generations" archetype
The image: a person who has lived their life in ten embassies. The children speak four languages, each holding the passports of two countries. The family as a "little UN." This is the composite image of dynastic diplomats.
The "Digital Nomad" archetype
The image: a developer aged 30–40 who works from a laptop in Bali, then in Lisbon, then in Mexico City. Money in crypto, several passports, friends in Telegram channels. This is the new, digital type of Yi Ma — appearing en masse after 2020.
The "Touring Artist" archetype
The image: an opera singer who has travelled all the world's stages. Or a jazz musician playing in clubs from New York to Tokyo. Life in suitcases, in dressing rooms, in hotel rooms. This is the classic theatrical Yi Ma.
The "Emigrant with a Story" archetype
The image: a person born in one country, raised in a second, educated in a third, married in a fourth, running a business in a fifth. Not because of wars or poverty, but because "that's how it went." These are the typical international careerists of the 21st century.
The "War-Zone Correspondent" archetype
The image: a journalist who has spent 20 years in war zones — from Bosnia to Syria, from Iraq to Ukraine. Yi Ma + the Seven Killings + the blade stars. These are the most "edgy" bearers of Yi Ma.
10 Practical application: how to work with Yi Ma
A few practical recommendations for those who have this star active — or for their loved ones.
If your Yi Ma is active
- Do not resist the movement. If you are a bearer, do not try to "settle down" at 25 in one place until retirement. This is an attempt to cheat the star, and it strikes back — with depression, illness, boredom.
- Build a "mobile base." Do not buy a huge house full of furniture in the first year of your career. Learn to live with light luggage, so that relocations are easy. Digital banking, digital storage, minimalism — these are your tools.
- Earn "moving money." Remote work, freelancing, a business "on wheels," investments in assets that are easily transferable between countries. Avoid a business with heavy infrastructure tied to a place.
- Use "your" years. When a luck pillar activates Yi Ma (see the table) — this is the best time for major moves. Use the window, do not miss it.
- Learn languages. Each language is a new country into which you are granted entry. A Yi Ma bearer with three or four languages is a "citizen of the world" with real freedom.
- Set up "relationship anchors." 2–3 close friends with whom you talk once a week regardless of where you are. Without this, the bearer of Yi Ma drifts into loneliness.
- Take care in the years of activation. When Yi Ma is "ablaze" — special caution behind the wheel, on planes, in unfamiliar places. Insurance, trusted drivers, proven routes.
- Do not use the road as an escape. Every relocation should be "toward," not "away from." If you are running from a problem — the problem travels with you in the suitcase.
If your partner/child has Yi Ma
- Do not try to "tie them down." It is useless. The star is stronger than your efforts. Better — become a "road" partner, one who travels alongside.
- Prepare bearer-children for a mobile life. Languages, flexibility, the ability to make friends quickly. Do not be afraid to change schools — for a Yi Ma child this is less traumatic than it seems.
- Accept that they are "not like everyone else." They cannot be taught to "live at home like all normal people." They are normal — but different. Their normal is the road.
- Create "home everywhere." Do not tie the meaning of "home" to walls. Home is the rituals, relationships, shared traditions that can be carried to any place.

Its bearers are global citizens, cross-cultural bridges, carriers of ideas and people between the points of the planet. They often pay for it with loneliness and the absence of "roots," but they receive in return what the settled will never see: a vast, many-coloured, inexhaustible world.
If you have this star — do not fear the road. Fear missing its call. A travelling horse that is not allowed to gallop falls ill. A horse galloping along its own path is the freest creature in the world.
