At the Lunar New Year the internet fills up with forecasts "for Tigers": success, luck, courage, risk. It sounds nice — but in genuine Chinese metaphysics 🐯 the Tiger is not a "zodiac sign" but 寅 (yín — Tiger) — the third of the twelve earthly branches, the one that opens spring. Let's unpack what the Year of the Tiger actually carries in BaZi.
1 What the Year of the Tiger 寅 means in BaZi
The branch 寅 (yín — Tiger) is a point of breakthrough. In the cycle of twelve branches it stands right after the winter 子 (zǐ — Rat) and 丑 (chǒu — Ox) and marks the start of spring (around February 4 in the solar calendar — the node 立春 (lìchūn — "the establishing of spring")). It is the moment when frozen winter water turns into rising wood energy, when the sprout breaks through the soil.
That is why 寅 carries the energy of start, initiative, expansion. It is the most "youthful" and pushing Wood of all the branches: it does not bloom softly like 卯 (mǎo — Rabbit), it bursts with growth. In a BaZi chart the year branch describes the pillar of one's ancestors and the first ~16 years of life — that is, the backdrop a person "grew out of."
In the classical system of the twelve branches, 寅 (yín — Tiger) sits in the phase of 临官 (línguān — "taking office") for Wood — meaning that wood Qi here is already mature and battle-ready, but has not yet reached the absolute peak that comes only in 卯 (mǎo — Rabbit). Figuratively speaking, the Tiger is a young general who has just been handed an army: plenty of strength, less experience, and ambition to spare. It is precisely this combination of mature force and youthful drive that makes the Tiger the most "breakthrough-driven" sign of the year.
It is also important to grasp a calendar subtlety: in BaZi the Year of the Tiger begins not with the Lunar New Year, and certainly not with January 1, but with the solar node 立春 (lìchūn — "the establishing of spring") around February 4. So a person born on, say, January 30 belongs by the solar calendar to the previous year — this is critical to check, otherwise the entire chart will be built incorrectly.
2 The hidden stems 藏干 of the Tiger branch
The main depth of any branch lies in its hidden stems 藏干 (cáng gān — "hidden heavenly stems"). These are heavenly stems "packed" inside an earthly branch. 寅 (yín — Tiger) is considered one of the richest branches — three elements at once are hidden within it:
- 甲 (jiǎ — Yang Wood) — the main, principal stem. This is the "stem of the mighty tree," the axis of the Tiger's personality: growth, uprightness, leadership.
- 丙 (bǐng — Yang Fire) — the rising guest. The sun inside the Tiger gives passion, charisma, visibility.
- 戊 (wù — Yang Earth) — the residual stem. A root-anchor that lends stability and ambition.
The combination 甲 + 丙 + 戊 explains the Tiger's duality: it is at once a tree reaching upward and a fire that warms. This is precisely why the Tiger is the branch of "生火" (shēng huǒ — "fire-producing"): the 丙 (bǐng — Fire) already smolders within it, ready to flare up in the three harmony.
These hidden stems are not an abstraction. In a practical chart reading, the master looks at which of them "sprout" outward, that is, coincide with the exposed heavenly stems of the pillars. If a person with the branch 寅 (yín — Tiger) also has 丙 (bǐng — Fire) on the heaven, then the Tiger's hidden Fire "activates" and its influence sharply increases — the character becomes noticeably more public and passionate. But if 戊 (wù — Earth) comes to the surface, practicality and a striving for a material footing move to the foreground.
This is also where the principle of transformation lies: the hidden 丙 (bǐng — Fire) is the "seed" of that very fiery three harmony 寅午戌 discussed below. The Tiger literally carries the embryo of Fire within it, and this is precisely why it is able to "ignite" the whole combination when it meets the Horse and the Dog. Without understanding the hidden stems, it is impossible to explain why a sign that is woody by nature suddenly turns into the Fire element.
3 The character of the Year of the Tiger (only the year layer!)
Once again we emphasize: below is a description of only the year branch, not the whole person. At the level of the year layer, 寅 (yín — Tiger) gives the following set of traits:
- Courage and drive 🐯 — the Tiger does not wait for permission, it acts first. This is the energy of a pioneer.
- Leadership — the Yang Wood 甲 (jiǎ) inside makes its bearer a natural "leader of the pack."
- Passion and idealism — the hidden 丙 (bǐng — Fire) adds charisma, faith in an idea, a desire to inspire.
- Independence — the Tiger tolerates control poorly; it needs room to maneuver.
- Impulsiveness — the flip side: impatience, a tendency to "leap" before assessing the risk.
At the level of lineage this often means a strong, ambitious family line — ancestors who "started from scratch," founders, settlers, pioneers.
It is worth understanding the mechanics of this impulsiveness more deeply. Young Wood 寅 grows quickly, but its roots are still shallow — hence the Tiger's characteristic problem: a grand start and a weak finish. In terms of elements, it lacks the finishing, holding Earth 戊 (wù) and the nourishing Water 水 (shuǐ). When these elements are present and favorable in the full chart, "tiger" energy turns into steady leadership; when they are absent — into a string of brilliant but abandoned undertakings.
Another frequent trait of the year Tiger is a heightened sense of justice and a readiness to protect "its own." This is that very "fighter" side of Yang Wood 甲 (jiǎ): directness, uncompromisingness, a dislike of intrigue. The Tiger prefers an open fight to behind-the-scenes maneuvering — which makes it a wonderful leader but at times a poor politician.
4 The element and season of the Tiger
The element of 寅 (yín — Tiger) is Yang Wood 陽木 (yáng mù), the season is the start of spring (February, the node 立春). This is "newborn" wood: the force of Qi has already turned toward growth, but is still young and impetuous.
| Attribute | Meaning for 寅 Tiger |
|---|---|
| Branch | 寅 (yín — Tiger) |
| Element | Wood 木 (mù), Yang polarity |
| Season | Start of spring (February) |
| Hidden stems | 甲 (jiǎ — Wood), 丙 (bǐng — Fire), 戊 (wù — Earth) |
| Direction | Northeast (艮 gèn) |
| Neighboring trigram | 艮 (gèn — Mountain) |
Because 寅 is growing Wood, it is especially "hungry" for Water 水 (shuǐ) and Earth 土 (tǔ) as nourishment and support. But an excess of Metal 金 (jīn) "chops down" the young tree — this is a challenge for the Tiger.
5 Compatibility: harmonies 三合 and clashes 沖
In genuine BaZi, "sign compatibility" is not "the Tiger loves the Dragon" but specific interactions of earthly branches. For 寅 (yín — Tiger) there are three key ones.
Three harmony 三合 (sān hé — "Three Harmony")
The Tiger belongs to the fiery trio 寅午戌 (yín-wǔ-xū):
- 寅 (yín — Tiger) + 午 (wǔ — Horse) + 戌 (xū — Dog) → transform into Fire 火 (huǒ).
The Tiger here is the "producing" member (生): it ignites the Fire with the hidden 丙 (bǐng). With the Horse and the Dog the Tiger forms an energetic "bonding": shared goals, passion, dynamism.
Harmony 六合 (liù hé — "Six Harmony")
The Tiger's pairing harmony is 寅亥合 (yín-hài hé) with the Pig:
- 寅 (yín — Tiger) + 亥 (hài — Pig) → a union of the element Wood 木 (mù).
This is "water nourishes wood": the Pig (Water) feeds the Tiger (Wood). A classic gentle, supportive union — often romantic.
Clash 沖 (chōng — "Clash")
The opposite of harmony is the 寅申冲 (yín-shēn chōng) with the Monkey:
- 寅 (yín — Tiger) ↔ 申 (shēn — Monkey) → Wood against Metal.
The Monkey's Metal "chops" the Tiger's Wood. This is an axis of change: relocations, job changes, conflicts with authority. But a clash is not a verdict — it is movement; many strong couples and careers are built precisely on this dynamism.
Curiously, 寅申冲 (yín-shēn chōng) is not only a clash of elements but also a collision of two "posts" (驛馬 yìmǎ — the "traveling horse" star of journeys is present in both the Tiger and the Monkey). So years and interactions along this axis are often tied to the road, relocations, business trips, emigration. For some it is a destructive rupture, for others a lucky ticket to a new life. Context decides what exactly the clash turns into, and that context is visible only in the full chart.

The year is counted by the solar calendar (the node 立春 ~February 4), not by January 1. Those born in late January – early February should check the exact date. Below are the years of the branch 寅 (yín — Tiger):
| Year | Year pillar (stem+branch) | Type of Tiger by the stem's element |
|---|---|---|
| 1974 | 甲寅 (jiǎ-yín) | Wood Tiger — pure drive, idealist |
| 1986 | 丙寅 (bǐng-yín) | Fire Tiger — charismatic, public |
| 1998 | 戊寅 (wù-yín) | Earth Tiger — steady, practical |
| 2010 | 庚寅 (gēng-yín) | Metal Tiger — disciplined, tough |
| 2022 | 壬寅 (rén-yín) | Water Tiger — strategist, thinker |
Note: all five are "Tigers," but 甲寅 (jiǎ-yín) and 壬寅 (rén-yín) are different people. The pop horoscope does not distinguish this; BaZi does.
7 Strengths and weaknesses of the Tiger
The Tiger's key balance is learning to see things through. The start energy of 寅 (yín) is strong, but without the nourishing water 水 (shuǐ) and the finishing Earth 戊 (wù) projects remain unfinished.
8 Career and money of the Tiger
At the year layer, 寅 (yín — Tiger) gravitates toward roles that require initiative and breakthrough:
- Entrepreneurship, startups — the Tiger is made to launch the new.
- Leadership and management positions — running a team, the "leader of the pack."
- Public-facing professions (the hidden 丙 — Fire): the stage, sales, media, politics.
- Wood fields: education, growth and development, ecology, design, fashion.
With money the Tiger is generous and unafraid to invest, but impulsive in spending. Wealth (財 cái) for the Tiger is Earth 土 (tǔ): accumulation, real estate, a material base discipline its "fiery" temperament. Important: whether Earth is actually favorable in your particular chart is determined by the Day Master, not the year branch.
The Tiger's career peak usually falls not in the years of "its own sign," but in the periods when the luck pillars 大運 (dà yùn — "great luck," ten-year cycles) bring the missing elements — most often Water for nourishment and Fire for self-expression. This is precisely why two people with the same year branch 寅 can live completely different careers: one soars at 30, another only blossoms by 50 — everything is decided by the order in which the luck pillars arrive, which a "horoscope by year" cannot see in principle.
9 Love and relationships of the Tiger
In love the year Tiger is passionate, proactive, but in need of freedom. It falls in love vividly and quickly, but tolerates control and routine poorly.
- Best chemistry — with 亥 (hài — Pig) through the harmony 寅亥合: gentle support, "water nourishes wood."
- Strong team — with 午 (wǔ — Horse) and 戌 (xū — Dog) through the trio 寅午戌: shared fire, shared goals.
- Turbulence zone — with 申 (shēn — Monkey) through 寅申冲: passion on the edge of conflict, lots of movement.
But again: the spouse palace is the day branch, not the year one. True compatibility is read from the birth day of both partners, while the Tiger in the year only hints at the "backdrop of the relationship."
10 Why you need the full chart
We have gone through every layer of the Year of the Tiger — but this, we repeat, is 1/8 of the picture. What does any "forecast for Tigers" miss?
Only the Day Master (日主 — rì zhǔ, "master of the day") will tell you what the Tiger means for you personally: for one person 寅 is wealth (財), for another career-pressure (官殺), for a third resource-support (印). The very same "Year of the Tiger" reverses its meaning depending on the structure of the chart.
So next time you hear "you're a Tiger, you need...," remember: that is just one letter of the alphabet. To read the whole word of destiny, you need all eight characters and the 大運 cycles.
