In this article, we will explore what rectification is, when it is necessary, which methods exist, the order in which they are applied, and the actual accuracy of the results. This is a complex technique, but understanding its principles will help you consciously approach restoring your own birth hour.

1 What is Time Rectification? Time Rectification (shí jiǎn — time refinement) is the process of precisely determining the exact birth hour within a BaZi chart to ensure accuracy in analyzing the Day Master's strength and the configuration of the Four Pillars. Since traditional methods sometimes leave ambiguity regarding the specific hour, rectification involves cross-referencing the individual's life events, personality traits, and physical characteristics with the potential outcomes of different hourly stems and branches. This step is crucial for correctly identifying the Useful God (yòng shén — Useful God) and Unfavorable God (jì shén — Unfavorable God), as well as accurately interpreting the influence of Ten Gods (shí shén — Ten Gods) throughout the Luck Pillars (dà yùn — Luck Pillar) and Annual Pillars (liú nián — Annual Pillar). Without proper rectification, predictions regarding career, wealth, health, and relationships may be significantly off.

In the direct BaZi problem, we know four parameters (year, month, day, hour) and construct the chart to make a forecast. In the inverse problem, we know three parameters (year, month, day) and a set of real-life facts, and attempt to restore the fourth—the hour.

Since the Hour Branch is one of the 12, we must select one out of the 12 possible charts. Each chart will be different: with a different Hour Pillar, different Hidden Stems in the Hour, a different Da Yun structure, and a different forecast. Only one of the 12 will match the person's real life.

The idea of rectification: Construct all 12 versions of the BaZi chart and overlay them with the actual dates of key events.The version in which the Da Yun and Liu Nian events function correctly is the true one.

校Principle: If BaZi is an exact system, then every life must have only one birth hour at which all events "align." All other 11 versions will yield contradictions.

2 When is rectification needed?

Rectification is demonstrated in several typical cases:

  1. The hour is completely unknown. For example, Soviet birth certificates often lack the time of birth. Or parents say: "It was in the morning, but I don't remember exactly."
  2. The time exists, but it is doubtful. For example, "13:00" is suspicious as it may be rounded, and the actual time could be different.
  3. Hour Boundary. The time is recorded as "23:00" or "01:00"—precisely at the boundary of two two-hour periods. It is necessary to determine which one applies.
  4. Mismatch between the BaZi chart and reality. The chart has been constructed, but the Da Yun forecasts do not align—there may be an error in the birth hour.
  5. Suspicious source of time. For example, in the certificate it states "12:30", but it is known that at the maternity hospital everyone was rounded up to the nearest half-hour.
  6. Immigrants and Refugees. Documents are often lost, the exact time is unknown, and only approximate indications from parents are available.

In work with astrological charts, rectification is a routine procedure. In BaZi, it is applied less frequently, but in Russian practice, considering the history of Soviet documents, it becomes almost a necessity for many clients.

3 The Method of Life Events is the primary tool.

This is the primary and most reliable method. We take 5–10 key life events of the client—those that definitely occurred in specific years—and check which of the 12 hour versions aligns with the Da Yun (dà yùn — Luck Pillar) and Liu Nian (liú nián — Annual Pillar) of these events.

Which events are suitable?

How is the process proceeding?

  1. We take the client's birth year-month-day → construct 12 versions of the BaZi chart with different hours.
  2. For each version, we calculate the Da Yun scale (which depends on gender, the polarity of the Year Pillar, and the Hour Pillar).
  3. Overlay the actual years of events to identify which Da Yun and Liu Nian were in effect.
  4. We calculate in how many events each version yields a "trigger" (logical activation).
  5. The version with the highest number of matches is the most probable one.
Quality Standard: Rectification is considered reliable if the selected version yields a match of 70%+ of events. If only 50%, more data is needed or the version is ambiguous.

4 Method by Character: Day Master and Elements

This method is used as supplementary. The idea is that the Hour Pillar influences a person's character, but to a lesser extent than the Day Master and the Monthly Branch. Nevertheless, the Hidden Stems of the Hour add nuances to the personality.

If a person is clearly "Fire" by character (impulsive, passionate, leadership-oriented), while the Day Master is calm (for example, Gui), then the Hour Branch is most likely Fire. This helps narrow the selection from 12 options down to 2 or 3.

5 Method by Appearance

In Chinese physiognomy, each Earthly Branch is associated with a specific facial type. This ancient method, mentioned as early as "The Drops from Heaven," may not offer 100% accuracy, but it functions effectively as an additional filter.

Correlation Between Earthly Branches and Appearance

In reality, the Hour Branch provides only a subtle hint regarding appearance—the main features are determined by the Year and Day pillars. However, in borderline cases (when one hesitates between two adjacent hours), this method can be helpful.

Limitation: Physiognomy methods work poorly under strong medical influences (such as plastic surgery, weight loss, or age-related changes). It is better to use photographs from 20–30 years of age, when the body has "settled" but has not yet changed significantly.

6 The Parental Method (fù mǔ fǎ)

In BaZi, there is a clear correspondence between a person's chart and their parents' fate. Through these correspondences, one can verify the Hour Pillar.

What they look at

  1. If the father died early, there should be a defeat of Pian Cai or a clash (chōng) between the Hour and the Wealth position in the chart.
  2. If the mother was very strong and supportive, Zheng Yin (zhèng yīn — Direct Resource) must be powerfully represented, and the Hour Pillar should not destroy it.
  3. If parents divorced early, there must be a separation between the Wealth Star (Cai) and Resource Star (Yin) in the chart, with the Hour Pillar acting as the arbitrator.

Example: If a client states that their father passed away when they were 7 years old, examine the Da Yun of this year in each of the 12 chart versions—in the correct version, there should be suppression of the Pian Cai (father). If the Cai is destroyed in one version but not in others, that version is more plausible.

7 Method regarding children

Since the Hour Pillar represents the Palace of Children, its correct identification significantly impacts predictions in this area.

What is being checked

If a client has two children born in specific years and discusses their personalities, the master checks each of the 12 hour versions to see in which one these facts "work." The version where they work is the winning one.

Power of the method: Children provide the most "biographically accurate" information. Each child's birth year is fixed, and their character is known. This offers powerful points for calibration.

8 Partner Method

Although the Palace of the Partner corresponds to the Day rather than the Hour, the Hour Pillar still influences the topic of marriage—through the activation of the Spouse Star and through the overall structure of the chart.

Which points are checked?

The Hour Pillar is especially important when the Spouse Star is "hidden" within the Hidden Stems of the Hour Branch. In such cases, marriage is activated specifically through the Hour Branch, and events become closely tied to this section of the chart.

9 Rectification Errors: What to Avoid Falling For

Rectification is a powerful technique but also dangerous. Any master can "force-fit" the chart to match facts if strict rules are not followed. Here are typical mistakes.

Error 1: Confirmation bias (qián yǎn zhèng míng — confirmation bias)

The master has already "felt" which hour is correct and subconsciously seeks confirmation while ignoring contradictions. Prevention: maintain a formal table of matches for each version and calculate scores.

Error 2: Relying on a single event

"This year was active → therefore your hour is such." One event is not proof. You need a minimum of 5–7 different events of varying natures.

Error 3: Overly flexible interpretation of activations

"Well, this can be interpreted as a career event, although the client is speaking about health." If the activation does not align with the factual nature of the event, it is not an activation but a stretch.

Error 4: Ignoring the Luck Pillar (dà yùn — Major Cycle).

Sometimes a master looks only at Annual Pillar (Liu Nian) events, but the Decade Luck Pillar (Da Yun) is more important. The ten-year background determines the overall possibility of an event. If the Da Yun contradicts it, no Liu Nian will bring about that event.

Error 5: Over-trusting the client.

The client states, "I had my best year in 2018." However, they do not recall that 2017 involved a divorce, while 2018 was merely the finalization of the proceedings. Please clarify all relevant periods.

Error 6: Failing to account for "shadow" events

Sometimes "events" are not weddings or jobs, but internal processes: depression, re-evaluation of values, spiritual crisis. These must also be included.

⚠ Main protection against errors: Rectification requires a minimum of 5–10 documented life facts per year and a formal matching table for each of the 12 versions. Without such systematization, the result is unreliable.

10 Precision of rectification vs verification

Main Question: How accurate is rectification? Can the hour be restored with minute precision based on life events?

Realistic accuracy

  1. Accuracy of 2 hours (one two-hour BaZi). This is reliable The goal of rectification is to pinpoint the exact birth hour. For example, if you were born in either the Si hour (9–11) or the Wu hour (11–13), after rectification we can confidently determine which one it was.
  2. Accuracy: 1 hour It is possible if rectification yields exactly one version and there is a borderline case, but it is less reliable in such instances.
  3. Accuracy of 30 minutes — excessive for BaZi, because the system operates in two-hour periods; within a single period, the chart remains identical.
  4. Precision to the minute. — impossible by definition in BaZi. This is the level of Western astrology (where a minute changes the ascendant), but it does not exist in BaZi.

So, the goal of rectification in BaZi is— Determine the correct two-hour birth hour.This is sufficient to construct a complete BaZi chart.

Verification after rectification

After selecting the version of the hour, it is necessary to... Verification — verification of the chart's performance on new data. For example:

  1. Forecast years ahead — for 2 to 3 years. What should happen according to the chart? Record it.
  2. In one year, we will verify against the facts. If more than 70% of the predictions come true, the BaZi chart is accurate and the rectification is correct.
  3. If many things have not come to fruition, the rectification may be inaccurate. Let us return to the process.

This "rectification → verification → correction" cycle is the gold standard. A skilled master does not stop at the initial "guessing" but refines the chart until it reliably forecasts outcomes.

Rectification is a dialogue with destiny. First, you ask it through your life, then confirm it through the future.
