When you look at a BaZi chart, the first thing to find is the heavenly stem of your day of birth. This is your Day Master (日主 (rì zhǔ — "master of the day"), rì zhǔ). Literally — "the master of the day." It is this that sets your inner nature, your character, your way of thinking and your basic reaction to the world.
Everything else in the chart — the years, months, hours, decades of luck — is interpreted relative to the Day Master. Do the surrounding elements help you or drain you? Which years will bring opportunities, and which will bring challenges? None of this can be understood without understanding your Day Master.
Where the Day Master comes from
In Chinese metaphysics, time is described through the system of the Ten Heavenly Stems (天干, tiān gān) and the Twelve Earthly Branches (地支, dì zhī). The stems and branches alternate in a 60-year cycle — and each day has its own pair.
The Day Master is the heavenly stem of your day of birth. It is one of ten: five elements × two poles (Yang and Yin).
The 10 Types of Day Master
A Strong and a Weak Day Master
One of the key questions in analyzing a chart is how strong your Day Master is. This is neither good nor bad — it is simply a basic characteristic that influences which elements you need.
- A strong Day Master — the chart has many elements that feed it or match it. Such a person needs elements that "spend" or control it — otherwise the energy gets stuck.
- A weak Day Master — surrounded by many controlling or draining elements. Such a person needs support — elements that feed its nature.
How the Day Master Shows Up in Life
The Day Master is not just an abstract element. It is real character traits that show up every day:
- Wood people (甲/乙) often strive for growth and self-realization, value independence and don't handle pressure from above well.
- Fire people (丙/丁) are natural communicators. They need to express themselves and inspire others. Without that, they "go out."
- Earth people (戊/己) are a support for those around them. Stability and meaning matter to them. They often take on too many of other people's problems.
- Metal people (庚/辛) value honesty and quality. They struggle to tolerate compromise and injustice. Excellent analysts.
- Water people (壬/癸) are flexible strategists. They think outside the box and have a good feel for people. They need freedom of movement.
Which Matters More: Your Zodiac Sign or Your Day Master?
In the BaZi system, the Day Master is incomparably more important than any zodiac sign. The year sign (Rat, Ox, Tiger…) is just one of the eight signs in the chart, and it describes the social context of your birth rather than your personal nature.
Two people with the same zodiac sign can be radically different people — if they have different Day Masters. And conversely: two people with different signs but the same Day Master will be alike in their basic nature.

Open My ChartThe Day Master and the Decades of Luck
Every 10 years your life passes through a new Luck Pillar (大运). It overlays your natal chart — and strengthens or weakens the Day Master. This is exactly why some periods of life feel like "a tailwind," while others feel like constant resistance.
Understanding your Day Master lets you predict which decades will be favorable for you — even before they arrive.
