In the BaZi system (八字, bā zì) each of the four pillars (四柱, sì zhù — "four pillars") corresponds to a particular period of life and a particular domain of existence. The Year Pillar (年柱, nián zhù) represents ancestors, childhood and one's bond with the wider society. The Month Pillar (月柱, yuè zhù) represents career, parents and youth. The Day Pillar (日柱, rì zhù) is yourself and your partner, your prime. And finally, the Hour Pillar (時柱, shí zhù) represents children, legacy, the inner world and later life.
1 What the Hour Pillar reveals
The Hour Pillar carries information about several important aspects of life:
- 👶 Children (子嗣, zǐ sì): how many children, what they will be like, your relationship with them. 食神 (shí shén — "Eating God") in this pillar is especially favourable for motherhood;
- 🌙 The inner world and secret desires: what a person does not show the world — fears, dreams, spirituality. The Heavenly Stem of the hour is the "public" side of this; the Earthly Branch of the hour is the "hidden" side;
- 🏡 Later life (老年运, lǎo nián yùn — "luck in old age"): how the second half of life unfolds, whether there is support in old age;
- 🎁 Legacy and transmission: what a person leaves behind — to their children, to the world, to history.
2 The importance of an exact birth time
The Twelve Earthly Branches (地支, dì zhī) divide the day into 12 equal two-hour periods. A difference of one minute can lead to a complete change of the Hour Branch — and therefore to a fundamentally different Hour Pillar, a different set of hidden stems (藏干, cáng gān) and different Ten Gods.
3 The 12 Hour Branches: characteristics of each hour
Each two-hour span corresponds to one of the Earthly Branches. Here are their characteristics from the perspective of the Hour Pillar:
The hour of dark Water — deep intuition, nocturnal thinking. Children are clever and introverted. Old age is quiet and contemplative. The inner world is rich, yet invisible from the outside.
The hour of nocturnal persistence. Children are methodical and hardworking, sometimes loners. Later life bears fruit through accumulated effort. The inner world is one of values and traditions.
The dawn hour of the leader. Children are active, enterprising, born for leadership. Later life means expansion and new projects. The inner world is one of ambition and independence.
Daybreak. Children are gentle, diplomatic, artistic. Later life brings harmony, a beautiful home life, cultural interests. The inner world is one of aesthetics and peacefulness.
The morning of the storehouse. Children are versatile (the Dragon carries three hidden stems). Later life means the accumulation of wisdom and spiritual growth. The inner world is complex and multi-layered.
The hour of insight. Children are clever, often with hidden talents. Later life may bring unexpected wealth (the Snake conceals Metal 庚 and Earth 戊). The inner world is one of wisdom and intuition.
The peak of the day. Children are energetic, freedom-loving, travellers at heart. Later life is active, full of movement. The inner world is one of freedom, movement and passion.
The afternoon. Children are creative and sensitive. Later life rests on family and loved ones. The inner world is one of art, nourishment and care for others.
The hour of quick wit. Children are clever, cunning, enterprising. Later life means preserving the fruits of labour (the Monkey carries Metal 庚). The inner world is one of strategic thinking.
The sunset hour of Metal. Children are precise, perfectionists, with refined taste. Later life means purity, order, high standards. The inner world is one of criticism and elegance.
The hour of loyalty. Children are loyal, devoted, with strong values. Later life means protecting loved ones and spiritual practice (the Dog carries 辛 Metal and 丁 Fire). The inner world is one of justice.
The night hour of rest. Children are kind, intuitive, creative. Later life means seclusion and spiritual seeking. The inner world is one of deep inner life, generosity and mysticism.
4 Children in the chart: what to read in the Hour Pillar
To understand the theme of children we look not only at the Hour Branch itself, but also at the stars within the pillar:
- 🌱 食神 (shí shén) in the Hour Pillar: a strong sign for children, especially for women — favourable motherhood, easy childbirth, warm relationships with one's descendants;
- ⚡ 偏印 (piān yìn) attacking 食神 in the Hour Pillar: difficulties with childbearing or complications in raising children;
- 💎 正官 (zhèng guān) in the Hour Pillar for a woman: children have a good career and status;
- 🔥 七殺 (qī shā) in the Hour Pillar: children are bright and strong — but demand a great deal of the parents' energy.
5 How the Hour Pillar shapes the later period of life
In the BaZi tradition the Hour Pillar governs the period after the age of 50–55 (the exact age depends on the specific Luck Pillars). This is the "evening of life" — a time when career is behind you, the children have grown up, and the inner world, legacy and the support of descendants come to the fore.
- If the Hour Pillar is favourable (the needed element, free of conflicts) — old age is calm, supported, meaningful;
- If the Hour Pillar clashes (沖, chōng — "clash") with the Day Pillar — there may be a rift with the children or difficulties in later life;
- A strong 正財 (zhèng cái — "Direct Wealth") in the Hour Pillar for a man — a prosperous later life.
