When a BaZi master sits down to analyze a chart, he first looks at the 日主 (rì zhǔ — "Day Master") — the Heavenly Stem of the day you were born. This is "you" within the chart. Nine times out of ten, ordinary work follows: assess the strength of the Day Master, find the useful elements, read the decades. But sometimes a chart refuses to obey the usual rules. The stems and branches fall into a figure that occurs in one person out of tens of thousands — and then the familiar "strong/weak" logic no longer works.

Such configurations are called 奇格異局 (qí gé yì jú — "wondrous structures, unusual layouts"). They are neither "better" nor "worse" than an ordinary chart — they are a different nature. They grant enormous potential, but also demand special conditions to unfold. Below are the ten rarest of them. Read carefully: something may resonate.

How to use this list. You will need your four pillars — year, month, day, hour. Each pillar consists of a Heavenly Stem (天干, tiān gān) on top and an Earthly Branch (地支, dì zhī) below. If you don't know your pillars, build your chart for free in the form below — it will produce all eight characters in a minute.

1從格 — the "Follow" Chart

1

🌊 從格 (cóng gé — "Follow Structure")

The Day Master is so weak and alone that, instead of fighting, it fully capitulates to the chart's dominant element — and "follows" it.

An ordinary chart strives for balance: if the 日主 (rì zhǔ) is weak, it needs the support of Resource and "companions." But in 從格 (cóng gé) the opposite happens. The Day Master is so deprived of roots and support that resistance is pointless — and then the wisdom of the chart is to surrender to the strongest. The chart "follows" Wealth (從財), Authority (從殺), the Output of talent (從兒), or Resource.

How to recognize it: the Day Master has not a single root in the Earthly Branches, there is no nourishing Resource, and one element (or a friendly pairing) occupies almost the entire chart. What it means: such people reach the heights when they stop "rowing against the current" and give themselves fully to the dominant force — money, power or creativity. But if a decade comes that revives the weak Day Master, the structure breaks, and a sharp crisis sets in. This is an "all or nothing" chart.

2魁罡 — the Four Pillars of Leaders

2

⚔️ 魁罡 (kuí gāng — "Kui Gang")

One of four special pillars: 戊戌, 庚戌, 庚辰, 壬辰. Grants authority, resolve and a leader's magnetism.

魁罡 (kuí gāng) is not the whole chart but a specific day pillar. There are only four: 戊戌 (wù xū), 庚戌 (gēng xū), 庚辰 (gēng chén), 壬辰 (rén chén). It is held that a person with a kui gang day pillar is born to command: they possess a natural firmness, fearlessness and the ability to lead.

How to recognize it: look at the day pillar (the third of the four). If it matches one of the four combinations listed, you have kui gang. What it means: the power of the structure unfolds when the pillar is repeated or supported. The classics warned: kui gang does not tolerate "injury" — clashes and punishments of the branches strike it more painfully than an ordinary chart. In women this structure was traditionally described as "a strong character that demands respect." In the modern interpretation of the Joey Yap school it is a marker of a born leader.

3天德 + 月德 — Double Virtue

3

🛡️ 天德 + 月德 (tiān dé + yuè dé — "Heavenly and Monthly Virtue")

Two protective "noble stars" at once. The chart is as if under a double shield of luck.

天德 (tiān dé — "Heavenly Virtue") and 月德 (yuè dé — "Monthly Virtue") are two auspicious stars (神煞, shén shà) that soften misfortunes and attract help in a difficult hour. Each occurs rarely on its own. But when both at once are present in a chart, that is already a rarity.

How to recognize it: the stars are calculated from the month of birth and the presence of a particular stem or branch in the chart. What it means: bearers of double virtue are as if "charmed" — in critical situations saving help appears out of nowhere, and troubles dissolve. This does not make a person wealthy automatically, but it grants resilience to catastrophe and the reputation of a kind, decent person whom others want to help.

4三奇貴人 — the Three Wonders

4

✨ 三奇貴人 (sān qí guì rén — "the Three Wonders of the noble person")

The rarest triad of Heavenly Stems: 甲戊庚, 乙丙丁 or 壬癸辛. Grants exceptional talent and breadth of nature.

There are only three "wondrous" combinations of stems running consecutively in a chart: 甲戊庚 (jiǎ–wù–gēng) — the "Heavenly Three Wonders," 乙丙丁 (yǐ–bǐng–dīng) — the "Earthly Three Wonders," and 壬癸辛 (rén–guǐ–xīn) — the "Human Three Wonders." To catch any of them in the correct order among the chart's four stems is a great rarity.

How to recognize it: write out the four Heavenly Stems atop the pillars and check whether three of them form one of the triads. What it means: the Three Wonders are traditionally linked with outstanding abilities, an unconventional mind and a broad, noble nature. It is the star of scholars, inventors, people of art — those who see the world differently. The structure is especially strong if reinforced by "noble people" (貴人, guì rén) in the branches.

5專旺格 — the Pure Single-Season Chart

5

🔥 專旺格 (zhuān wàng — "concentrated prosperity")

Almost the entire chart is a single element. The Day Master does not follow another's force but itself becomes the unstoppable wave of its own element.

If 從格 (cóng gé) is a weak Day Master surrendering to a force, then 專旺格 (zhuān wàng) is the opposite: the Day Master itself is the dominant element, and the whole chart supports it to the limit. A Water chart 潤下 (rùn xià), a Fire chart 炎上 (yán shàng), Wood 曲直 (qū zhí), Metal 從革 (cóng gé — of Metal), Earth 稼穡 (jià sè) — the five "pure" single-season structures.

How to recognize it: the overwhelming majority of stems and branches belong to one element (or its "mother" Resource), and there is no force capable of curbing it. What it means: such people possess a monstrous concentration and driving force in their field. But, as in cong ge, everything rests on purity: a single "enemy" element in a decade, attempting to subdue the element, can cause the severest discord.

"An ordinary chart seeks balance. A rare chart seeks purity — and in purity finds a power inaccessible to balance."

6金神格 — the Special Metal Structure

6

⚙️ 金神格 (jīn shén gé — "the Metal Spirit structure")

A rare formula on certain pillars, requiring Fire for "tempering." A sharp, cutting, decisive character.

金神格 (jīn shén gé) is one of the classical "special formulas," built on particular combinations of pillars that carry concentrated Metal energy (for example, pillars with 乙丑, 己巳, 癸酉 in a specific role). Its main feature: this "Metal Spirit" needs Fire.

How to recognize it: the structure is determined by specific pillars and the presence/absence of fiery "control" — this is already work for a detailed reading. What it means: Metal that has passed through Fire turns into a sharp blade or a valuable tool. Bearers of jin shen are often decisive, sharp in tongue and in action, intolerant of half-measures. With the right Fire in the chart the structure grants strength and status; without it, the sharpness turns into harshness and conflict.

7天元一氣 — Four Identical Pillars

7

🎴 天元一氣 (tiān yuán yī qì — "unified Heavenly energy")

All four Heavenly Stems are identical. An extremely rare, almost "collector's item" chart.

Imagine a chart where all four pillars have one and the same Heavenly Stem — for example, four times 甲 (jiǎ — Yang Wood) or four times 庚 (gēng — Yang Metal). This is 天元一氣 (tiān yuán yī qì). The probability of such a coincidence at birth is vanishingly small.

How to recognize it: simply look at the tops of all four pillars — if the character is the same one four times, this is it. Even rarer is 地支一氣 (dì zhī yī qì) — four identical Earthly Branches. What it means: the unified energy grants an extraordinary wholeness of character and a single-directional destiny. Such a person is "all of one material." A chart like this is interpreted strictly through additional structures (often as a variety of zhuan wang or cong ge) — here a master is needed.

8傷官配印 — Genius Plus Wisdom

8

🎨 傷官配印 (shāng guān pèi yìn — "the Hurting Officer paired with the Seal")

A rebellious talent balanced by the wisdom of the Resource. The formula of gifted intellectuals and creators.

傷官 (shāng guān — "Hurting Officer") is the Ten God of creativity, rebellion and vivid self-expression. On its own it is willful and can "hurt" authority and order. But when 印 (yìn — "Seal," Resource) stands beside it — wisdom, knowledge, protection — the talent is curbed and directed into creation. This pairing is called 傷官配印 (shāng guān pèi yìn).

How to recognize it: the chart strongly expresses shang guan while a supporting yin Resource is present at the same time. What it means: this is the classic formula of gifted intellectuals — scholars, writers, outstanding specialists whose rebellious mind is bound together by deep knowledge. Talent without chaos, genius with discipline. One of the most respected "noble" combinations.

9食神制殺 — the Tamed Killing

9

🛠️ 食神制殺 (shí shén zhì shā — "the Eating God subdues the Seven Killings")

The ferocious pressure of 七殺 is tamed by an outpouring talent. From a threat are born power and achievement.

七殺 (qī shā — "Seven Killings") is the most aggressive of the Ten Gods: pressure, challenges, enemies, extreme situations. Untamed, it can "kill" the Day Master. But 食神 (shí shén — "Eating God"), the gentle outlet of talent, is able to curb it. This pair — 食神制殺 (shí shén zhì shā) — turns a deadly threat into an instrument of power.

How to recognize it: the chart contains a powerful qi sha and a shi shen controlling it, with a sufficiently robust Day Master. What it means: this is the chart of people who turn pressure into achievement — commanders, crisis managers, those who flourish where others break. From the "Seven Killings" a general is born. One of the most prized structures for a great career and power.

⚠️ Important about taming. The power of the structure lies in the equilibrium of "attack" and "control." If shi shen is too weak, qi sha breaks loose and strikes the Day Master. If too strong, the pressure vanishes, and the very engine of achievement is lost. Only a detailed reading of the pillars and decades can determine the exact measure.

10財官印全 — the Complete Set

10

👑 財官印全 (cái guān yìn quán — "the fullness of Wealth, Authority and Resource")

The three pillars of well-being — money, status, wisdom — are present and support one another. The chart of a "full life."

In the classics, three things are considered the supports of a prosperous destiny: 財 (cái — Wealth), 官 (guān — Authority, status) and 印 (yìn — Resource, wisdom). When all three are present in the chart and form a living circle of generation (Wealth feeds Authority, Authority generates Resource, Resource protects the Day Master), this is 財官印全 (cái guān yìn quán) — the chart of "fullness."

How to recognize it: the Ten Gods of your chart simultaneously contain Wealth, Authority and Resource — without gaps and without mutual destruction. What it means: such a person can have money, status and respect all at once, with one supporting the other rather than taking from it. This is a rare "balanced fullness" — a destiny in which one need not sacrifice one sphere for the sake of another.

And What If You Have an "Ordinary" Chart?

Here is the honest truth that you won't always be told: the overwhelming majority of charts are ordinary. Nine people out of ten have none of the structures listed — and that is perfectly normal. What's more, many "special" charts require ideal conditions, break from a single unlucky decade, and bring serious risks along with their potential. An ordinary, balanced chart often lives more calmly and happily than a "brilliant" all-or-nothing structure.

A rare structure is neither a pass to paradise nor a sentence. It is simply a different configuration, with its own strengths and weaknesses. Far more important is how you use your useful elements, how you live through your decades 大運 (dà yùn — "great luck"), and what decisions you make. Destiny in BaZi is a map, not a cage.
